Primitives for Contract-based Synchronization
We investigate how contracts can be used to regulate the interaction between
processes. To do that, we study a variant of the concurrent constraints
calculus presented in [1], featuring primitives for multi-party synchronization
via contracts. We proceed in two directions. First, we exploit our primitives
to model some contract-based interactions. Then, we discuss how several models
for concurrency can be expressed through our primitives. In particular, we

A Concurrent Perspective on Smart Contracts
In this paper, we explore remarkable similarities between multi-transactional
behaviors of smart contracts in cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum and classical
problems of shared-memory concurrency. We examine two real-world examples from
the Ethereum blockchain and analyzing how they are vulnerable to bugs that are
closely reminiscent to those that often occur in traditional concurrent
programs. We then elaborate on the relation between observable contract
behaviors and well-studied concurrency topics, such as atomicity, interference,
synchronization, and resource ownership. The described
contracts-as-concurrent-objects analogy provides deeper understanding of
potential threats for smart contracts, indicate better engineering practices,
and enable applications of existing state-of-the-art formal verification

Permission-Based Separation Logic for Multithreaded Java Programs
This paper motivates and presents a program logic for reasoning about multithreaded Java-like programs with concurrency primitives such as dynamic thread creation, thread joining and reentrant object monitors. The logic is based on concurrent separation logic. It is the first detailed adaptation of concurrent separation logic to a multithreaded Java-like language. The program logic associates a unique static access permission with each heap location, ensuring exclusive write accesses and ruling out data races. Concurrent reads are supported through fractional permissions. Permissions can be transferred between threads upon thread starting, thread joining, initial monitor entrancies and final monitor exits.\ud
This paper presents the basic principles to reason about thread creation and thread joining. It finishes with an outlook how this logic will evolve into a full-fledged verification technique for Java (and possibly other multithreaded languages)
The force on the flex: Global parallelism and portability
A parallel programming methodology, called the force, supports the construction of programs to be executed in parallel by an unspecified, but potentially large, number of processes. The methodology was originally developed on a pipelined, shared memory multiprocessor, the Denelcor HEP, and embodies the primitive operations of the force in a set of macros which expand into multiprocessor Fortran code. A small set of primitives is sufficient to write large parallel programs, and the system has been used to produce 10,000 line programs in computational fluid dynamics. The level of complexity of the force primitives is intermediate. It is high enough to mask detailed architectural differences between multiprocessors but low enough to give the user control over performance. The system is being ported to a medium scale multiprocessor, the Flex/32, which is a 20 processor system with a mixture of shared and local memory. Memory organization and the type of processor synchronization supported by the hardware on the two machines lead to some differences in efficient implementations of the force primitives, but the user interface remains the same. An initial implementation was done by retargeting the macros to Flexible Computer Corporation's ConCurrent C language. Subsequently, the macros were caused to directly produce the system calls which form the basis for ConCurrent C. The implementation of the Fortran based system is in step with Flexible Computer Corporations's implementation of a Fortran system in the parallel environment
Contract-Based General-Purpose GPU Programming
Using GPUs as general-purpose processors has revolutionized parallel
computing by offering, for a large and growing set of algorithms, massive
data-parallelization on desktop machines. An obstacle to widespread adoption,
however, is the difficulty of programming them and the low-level control of the
hardware required to achieve good performance. This paper suggests a
programming library, SafeGPU, that aims at striking a balance between
programmer productivity and performance, by making GPU data-parallel operations
accessible from within a classical object-oriented programming language. The
solution is integrated with the design-by-contract approach, which increases
confidence in functional program correctness by embedding executable program
specifications into the program text. We show that our library leads to modular
and maintainable code that is accessible to GPGPU non-experts, while providing
performance that is comparable with hand-written CUDA code. Furthermore,
runtime contract checking turns out to be feasible, as the contracts can be
executed on the GPU
Multi-GPU Graph Analytics
We present a single-node, multi-GPU programmable graph processing library
that allows programmers to easily extend single-GPU graph algorithms to achieve
scalable performance on large graphs with billions of edges. Directly using the
single-GPU implementations, our design only requires programmers to specify a
few algorithm-dependent concerns, hiding most multi-GPU related implementation
details. We analyze the theoretical and practical limits to scalability in the
context of varying graph primitives and datasets. We describe several
optimizations, such as direction optimizing traversal, and a just-enough memory
allocation scheme, for better performance and smaller memory consumption.
Compared to previous work, we achieve best-of-class performance across
operations and datasets, including excellent strong and weak scalability on

Gunrock: A High-Performance Graph Processing Library on the GPU
For large-scale graph analytics on the GPU, the irregularity of data access
and control flow, and the complexity of programming GPUs have been two
significant challenges for developing a programmable high-performance graph
library. "Gunrock", our graph-processing system designed specifically for the
GPU, uses a high-level, bulk-synchronous, data-centric abstraction focused on
operations on a vertex or edge frontier. Gunrock achieves a balance between
performance and expressiveness by coupling high performance GPU computing
primitives and optimization strategies with a high-level programming model that
allows programmers to quickly develop new graph primitives with small code size
and minimal GPU programming knowledge. We evaluate Gunrock on five key graph
primitives and show that Gunrock has on average at least an order of magnitude
speedup over Boost and PowerGraph, comparable performance to the fastest GPU
hardwired primitives, and better performance than any other GPU high-level

Functionally Specified Distributed Transactions in Co-operative Scenarios
Addresses the problem of specifying co-operative, distributed transactions in a manner that can be subject to verification and testing. Our approach combines the process-algebraic language LOTOS and the object-oriented database modelling language TM to obtain a clear and formal protocol for distributed database transactions meant to describe co-operation scenarios. We argue that a separation of concerns, namely the interaction of database applications on the one hand and data modelling on the other, results in a practical, modular approach that is formally well-founded.
