    Quantum steering: a review with focus on semidefinite programming

    Quantum steering refers to the non-classical correlations that can be observed between the outcomes of measurements applied on half of an entangled state and the resulting post-measured states that are left with the other party. From an operational point of view, a steering test can be seen as an entanglement test where one of the parties performs uncharacterised measurements. Thus, quantum steering is a form of quantum inseparability that lies in between the well-known notions of Bell nonlocality and entanglement. Moreover, quantum steering is also related to several asymmetric quantum information protocols where some of the parties are considered untrusted. Because of these facts, quantum steering has received a lot of attention both theoretically and experimentally. The main goal of this review is to give an overview of how to characterise quantum steering through semidefinite programming. This characterisation provides efficient numerical methods to address a number of problems, including steering detection, quantification, and applications. We also give a brief overview of some important results that are not directly related to semidefinite programming. Finally, we make available a collection of semidefinite programming codes that can be used to study the topics discussed in this articleComment: v2: 31 pages, 2 figures. Published version.     The counter-propagating Rossby-wave perspective on baroclinic instability. Part III: Primitive-equation disturbances on the sphere

    Baroclinic instability of perturbations described by the linearized primitive quations, growing on steady zonal jets on the sphere, can be understood in terms of the interaction of pairs of counter-propagating Rossby waves (CRWs). The CRWs can be viewed as the basic components of the dynamical system where the Hamiltonian is the pseudoenergy and each CRW has a zonal coordinate and pseudomomentum. The theory holds for adiabatic frictionless flow to the extent that truncated forms of pseudomomentum and pseudoenergy are globally conserved. These forms focus attention on Rossby wave activity. Normal mode (NM) dispersion relations for realistic jets are explained in terms of the two CRWs associated with each unstable NM pair. Although derived from the NMs, CRWs have the conceptual advantage that their structure is zonally untilted, and can be anticipated given only the basic state. Moreover, their zonal propagation, phase-locking and mutual interaction can all be understood by ‘PV-thinking’ applied at only two ‘home-bases’—potential vorticity (PV) anomalies at one home-base induce circulation anomalies, both locally and at the other home-base, which in turn can advect the PV gradient and modify PV anomalies there. At short wavelengths the upper CRW is focused in the mid-troposphere just above the steering level of the NM, but at longer wavelengths the upper CRW has a second wave-activity maximum at the tropopause. In the absence of meridional shear, CRW behaviour is very similar to that of Charney modes, while shear results in a meridional slant with height of the air-parcel displacement-structures of CRWs in sympathy with basic-state zonal angular-velocity surfaces. A consequence of this slant is that baroclinically growing eddies (on jets broader than the Rossby radius) must tilt downshear in the horizontal, giving rise to up-gradient momentum fluxes that tend to accelerate the barotropic component of the jet

    Automatic differentiation accelerated shape optimization approaches to photonic inverse design on rectilinear simulation grids

    Shape optimization approaches to inverse design offer low-dimensional, physically-guided parameterizations of structures by representing them as combinations of shape primitives. However, on discretized rectilinear simulation grids, computing the gradient of a user objective via the adjoint variables method requires a sum reduction of the forward/adjoint field solutions and the Jacobian of the simulation material distribution with respect to the structural shape parameters. These shape parameters often perturb large or global parts of the simulation grid resulting in many non-zero Jacobian entries, which are typically computed by finite-difference in practice. Consequently, the gradient calculation can be non-trivial. In this work we propose to accelerate the gradient calculation by invoking automatic differentiation (AutoDiff) in instantiations of structural material distributions. In doing so, we develop extensible differentiable mappings from shape parameters to shape primitives and differentiable effective logic operations (denoted AutoDiffGeo). These AutoDiffGeo definitions may introduce some additional discretization error into the field solutions because they relax notions of sub-pixel smoothing along shape boundaries. However, we show that some mappings (e.g. simple cuboids) can achieve zero error with respect to volumetric averaging strategies. We demonstrate AutoDiff enhanced shape optimization using three integrated photonic examples: a multi-etch blazed grating coupler, a non-adiabatic waveguide transition taper, and a polarization-splitting grating coupler. We find accelerations of the gradient calculation by AutoDiff relative to finite-difference often exceed 50x, resulting in total wall time accelerations of 4x or more on the same hardware with little or no compromise to final device performance.     A Partially Randomized Approach to Trajectory Planning and Optimization for Mobile Robots with Flat Dynamics

    Motion planning problems are characterized by huge search spaces and complex obstacle structures with no concise mathematical expression. The fixed-wing airplane application considered in this thesis adds differential constraints and point-wise bounds, i. e. an infinite number of equality and inequality constraints. An optimal trajectory planning approach is presented, based on the randomized Rapidly-exploring Random Trees framework (RRT*). The local planner relies on differential flatness of the equations of motion to obtain tree branch candidates that automatically satisfy the differential constraints. Flat output trajectories, in this case equivalent to the airplane's flight path, are designed using Bézier curves. Segment feasibility in terms of point-wise inequality constraints is tested by an indicator integral, which is evaluated alongside the segment cost functional. Although the RRT* guarantees optimality in the limit of infinite planning time, it is argued by intuition and experimentation that convergence is not approached at a practically useful rate. Therefore, the randomized planner is augmented by a deterministic variational optimization technique. To this end, the optimal planning task is formulated as a semi-infinite optimization problem, using the intermediate result of the RRT(*) as an initial guess. The proposed optimization algorithm follows the feasible flavor of the primal-dual interior point paradigm. Discretization of functional (infinite) constraints is deferred to the linear subproblems, where it is realized implicitly by numeric quadrature. An inherent numerical ill-conditioning of the method is circumvented by a reduction-like approach, which tracks active constraint locations by introducing new problem variables. Obstacle avoidance is achieved by extending the line search procedure and dynamically adding obstacle-awareness constraints to the problem formulation. Experimental evaluation confirms that the hybrid approach is practically feasible and does indeed outperform RRT*'s built-in optimization mechanism, but the computational burden is still significant.Bewegungsplanungsaufgaben sind typischerweise gekennzeichnet durch umfangreiche Suchräume, deren vollständige Exploration nicht praktikabel ist, sowie durch unstrukturierte Hindernisse, für die nur selten eine geschlossene mathematische Beschreibung existiert. Bei der in dieser Arbeit betrachteten Anwendung auf Flächenflugzeuge kommen differentielle Randbedingungen und beschränkte Systemgrößen erschwerend hinzu. Der vorgestellte Ansatz zur optimalen Trajektorienplanung basiert auf dem Rapidly-exploring Random Trees-Algorithmus (RRT*), welcher die Suchraumkomplexität durch Randomisierung beherrschbar macht. Der spezifische Beitrag ist eine Realisierung des lokalen Planers zur Generierung der Äste des Suchbaums. Dieser erfordert ein flaches Bewegungsmodell, sodass differentielle Randbedingungen automatisch erfüllt sind. Die Trajektorien des flachen Ausgangs, welche im betrachteten Beispiel der Flugbahn entsprechen, werden mittels Bézier-Kurven entworfen. Die Einhaltung der Ungleichungsnebenbedingungen wird durch ein Indikator-Integral überprüft, welches sich mit wenig Zusatzaufwand parallel zum Kostenfunktional berechnen lässt. Zwar konvergiert der RRT*-Algorithmus (im probabilistischen Sinne) zu einer optimalen Lösung, jedoch ist die Konvergenzrate aus praktischer Sicht unbrauchbar langsam. Es ist daher naheliegend, den Planer durch ein gradientenbasiertes lokales Optimierungsverfahren mit besseren Konvergenzeigenschaften zu unterstützen. Hierzu wird die aktuelle Zwischenlösung des Planers als Initialschätzung für ein kompatibles semi-infinites Optimierungsproblem verwendet. Der vorgeschlagene Optimierungsalgorithmus erweitert das verbreitete innere-Punkte-Konzept (primal dual interior point method) auf semi-infinite Probleme. Eine explizite Diskretisierung der funktionalen Ungleichungsnebenbedingungen ist nicht erforderlich, denn diese erfolgt implizit durch eine numerische Integralauswertung im Rahmen der linearen Teilprobleme. Da die Methode an Stellen aktiver Nebenbedingungen nicht wohldefiniert ist, kommt zusätzlich eine Variante des Reduktions-Ansatzes zum Einsatz, bei welcher der Vektor der Optimierungsvariablen um die (endliche) Menge der aktiven Indizes erweitert wird. Weiterhin wurde eine Kollisionsvermeidung integriert, die in den Teilschritt der Liniensuche eingreift und die Problemformulierung dynamisch um Randbedingungen zur lokalen Berücksichtigung von Hindernissen erweitert. Experimentelle Untersuchungen bestätigen, dass die Ergebnisse des hybriden Ansatzes aus RRT(*) und numerischem Optimierungsverfahren der klassischen RRT*-basierten Trajektorienoptimierung überlegen sind. Der erforderliche Rechenaufwand ist zwar beträchtlich, aber unter realistischen Bedingungen praktisch beherrschbar

    LB3D: A Parallel Implementation of the Lattice-Boltzmann Method for Simulation of Interacting Amphiphilic Fluids

    We introduce the lattice-Boltzmann code LB3D, version 7.1. Building on a parallel program and supporting tools which have enabled research utilising high performance computing resources for nearly two decades, LB3D version 7 provides a subset of the research code functionality as an open source project. Here, we describe the theoretical basis of the algorithm as well as computational aspects of the implementation. The software package is validated against simulations of meso-phases resulting from self-assembly in ternary fluid mixtures comprising immiscible and amphiphilic components such as water–oil–surfactant systems. The impact of the surfactant species on the dynamics of spinodal decomposition are tested and quantitative measurement of the permeability of a body centred cubic (BCC) model porous medium for a simple binary mixture is described. Single-core performance and scaling behaviour of the code are reported for simulations on current supercomputer architectures

    The counter-propagating Rossby-wave perspective on baroclinic instability. II: Application to the Charney model

    The constant-density Charney model describes the simplest unstable basic state with a planetary-vorticity gradient, which is uniform and positive, and baroclinicity that is manifest as a negative contribution to the potential-vorticity (PV) gradient at the ground and positive vertical wind shear. Together, these ingredients satisfy the necessary conditions for baroclinic instability. In Part I it was shown how baroclinic growth on a general zonal basic state can be viewed as the interaction of pairs of ‘counter-propagating Rossby waves’ (CRWs) that can be constructed from a growing normal mode and its decaying complex conjugate. In this paper the normal-mode solutions for the Charney model are studied from the CRW perspective. Clear parallels can be drawn between the most unstable modes of the Charney model and the Eady model, in which the CRWs can be derived independently of the normal modes. However, the dispersion curves for the two models are very different; the Eady model has a short-wave cut-off, while the Charney model is unstable at short wavelengths. Beyond its maximum growth rate the Charney model has a neutral point at finite wavelength (r=1). Thereafter follows a succession of unstable branches, each with weaker growth than the last, separated by neutral points at integer r—the so-called ‘Green branches’. A separate branch of westward-propagating neutral modes also originates from each neutral point. By approximating the lower CRW as a Rossby edge wave and the upper CRW structure as a single PV peak with a spread proportional to the Rossby scale height, the main features of the ‘Charney branch’ (0<r<1) can be deduced without prior calculation of the normal modes. Furthermore, CRWs from this branch are seen to make a smooth transition into the boundary and interior PV structure of the neutral modes appearing at r=1. The behaviour of the other branches and neutral points is essentially the same when viewed from the CRW perspective, but with cancelling interior PV structures reducing the self and mutual interaction of the CRWs. The underlying dynamics determining the nature of all the solutions is the difference in the scale-dependence of PV inversion for boundary and interior PV anomalies, the Rossby-wave propagation mechanism and the CRW interaction. The behaviour of the Charney modes and the first neutral branch, which rely on tropospheric PV gradients, are arguably more applicable to the atmosphere than modes of the Eady model where the positive PV gradient exists only at the tropopaus
