    Multi-objective model for optimizing railway infrastructure asset renewal

    Trabalho inspirado num problema real da empresa Infraestruturas de Portugal, EP.A multi-objective model for managing railway infrastructure asset renewal is presented. The model aims to optimize three objectives, while respecting operational constraints: levelling investment throughout multiple years, minimizing total cost and minimizing work start postponements. Its output is an optimized intervention schedule. The model is based on a case study from a Portuguese infrastructure management company, which specified the objectives and constraints, and reflects management practice on railway infrastructure. The results show that investment levelling greatly influences the other objectives and that total cost fluctuations may range from insignificant to important, depending on the condition of the infrastructure. The results structure is argued to be general and suggests a practical methodology for analysing trade-offs and selecting a solution for implementation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Maintenance grouping for multi-component systems with availability constraints and limited maintenance teams

    International audienceThe paper deals with a maintenance grouping approach for multi-component systems whose components are connected in series. The considered systems are required to serve a sequence of missions with limited breaks/stoppage durations while maintenance teams (repairmen) are limited and may vary over time. The optimization of the maintenance grouping decision for such multi-component systems leads to a NP-complete problem. The aim of the paper is to propose and to optimize a dynamic maintenance decision rule on a rolling horizon. The heuristic optimization scheme for the maintenance decision is developed by implementing two optimization algorithms (genetic algorithm and MULTIFIT) to find an optimal maintenance planning under both availability and limited repairmen constraints. Thanks to the proposed maintenance approach, impacts of availability constraints or/and limited maintenance teams on the maintenance planning and grouping are highlighted. In addition, the proposed grouping approach allows also updating online the maintenance planning in dynamic contexts such as the change of required availability level and/or the change of repairmen over time. A numerical example of a 20-component system is introduced to illustrate the use and the advantages of the proposed approach in the maintenance optimization framework

    Imperfect Maintenance Models, from Theory to Practice

    The role of maintenance in the industrial environment changed a lot in recent years, and today, it is a key function for long-term profitability in an organization. Many contributions were recently written by researchers on this topic. A lot of models were proposed to optimize maintenance activities while ensuring availability and high-quality requirements. In addition to the well-known classification of maintenance activities—preventive and corrective—in the last decades, a new classification emerged in the literature regarding the degree of system restoration after maintenance actions. Among them, the imperfect maintenance is one of the most studied maintenance types: it is defined as an action after which the system lies in a state somewhere between an “as good as new” state and its pre-maintenance condition “as bad as old.” Most of the industrial companies usually operate with imperfect maintenance actions, even if the awareness in actual industrial context is limited. On the practical definition side, in particular, there are some real situations of imperfect maintenance: three main specific cases were identified, both from literature analysis and from experience. Considering these three implementations of imperfect maintenance actions and the main models proposed in the literature, we illustrate how to identify the most suitable model for each real case

    A study of postponed replacement in a delay time model

    We develop a delay time model for a one component system with postponed replacement to analyze situations in which maintenance might not be executed immediately upon discovery of a defect in the system. Reasons for postponement are numerous: to avoid production disruption or unnecessary or ineffective replacement; to prepare for replacement; to extend component life; to wait for an opportunity. This paper explores conditions that make postponement cost-effective. We are interested in modelling the reality in which a maintainer either prioritizes functional continuity or is not confident of the inspection test indicating a defective state. In some cases more frequent inspection and a longer time limit for postponement are recommended to take advantage of maintenance opportunities, characterized by their low cost, arising after a positive inspection. However, when the cost of failure increases, a significant reduction in the time limit of postponement interval is observed. The examples reveal that both the time to defect arrival and delay time have a significant effect upon the cost-effectiveness of maintenance at the limit of postponement. Also, more simply, we find that opportunities must occur frequently enough and inspection should be a high quality procedure to risk postponement

    Preventive maintenance and replacement scheduling : models and algorithms.

    Preventive maintenance is a broad term that encompasses a set of activities aimed at improving the overall reliability and availability of a system. Preventive maintenance involves a basic trade-off between the costs of conducting maintenance/replacement activities and the cost savings achieved by reducing the overall rate of occurrence of system failures. Designers of preventive maintenance schedules must weigh these individual costs in an attempt to minimize the overall cost of system operation. They may also be interested in maximizing the system reliability, subject to some sort of budget constraint. In this dissertation, we present a complete discussion about the problem definition and review the literature. We develop new nonlinear mixed-integer optimization models, solve them by standard nonlinear optimization algorithms, and analyze their computational results. In addition, we extend the optimization models by considering engineering economy features and reformulate them as a multi-objective optimization model. We optimize this model by generational and steady state genetic algorithms as well as by a simulated annealing algorithm and demonstrate the computational results obtained by implementation of these algorithms. We perform a sensitivity analysis on the parameters of the optimization models and present a comparison between exact and metaheuristic algorithms in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy. Finally, we present a new mathematical function to model age reduction and improvement factor parameter used in optimization models. In addition, we develop a practical procedure to estimate the effect of maintenance activity on failure rate and effective age of multi component systems

    A condition-based maintenance policy for multi-component systems with a high maintenance setup cost

    Condition-based maintenance (CBM) is becoming increasingly important due to the development of advanced sensor and ICT technology, so that the condition data can be collected remotely. We propose a new CBM policy for multi-component systems with continuous stochastic deteriorations. To reduce the high setup cost of maintenance, a joint maintenance interval is proposed. With the joint maintenance interval and control limits of components as decision variables, we develop a model for the minimization of the average long-run maintenance cost rate of the systems. Moreover, a numerical study on a case of a wind power farm consisting of a large number of non-identical components is performed, including a sensitivity analysis. At last, our policy is compared to a corrective-maintenance-only policy
