Shape Preserving Spline Interpolation
A rational spline solution to the problem of shape preserving interpolation is discussed. The rational spline is represented in terms of first derivative values at the knots and provides an alternative to the spline-under-tension. The idea of making the shape control parameters dependent on the first derivative unknowns is then explored. The monotonic or convex shape of the interpolation data can then be preserved automatically through the solution of the resulting non-linear consistency equations of the spline
Data visualization using rational spline interpolation
AbstractA smooth curve interpolation scheme for positive, monotonic, and convex data has been developed. This scheme uses piecewise rational cubic functions. The two families of parameters, in the description of the rational interpolant, have been constrained to preserve the shape of the data. The rational spline scheme has a unique representation. The degree of smoothness attained is C1

A rational cubic spline with tension
A rational cubic spline curve is described which has tension control parameters for manipulating the shape of the curve. The spline is presented in both interpolatory and rational B-spline forms, and the behaviour of the resulting representations is analysed with respect to variation of the control parameters
Shape preserving interpolatory subdivision schemes
Stationary interpolatory subdivision schemes which preserve shape properties such as convexity or monotonicity are constructed. The schemes are rational in the data and generate limit functions that are at least . The emphasis is on a class of six-point convexity preserving subdivision schemes that generate limit functions. In addition, a class of six-point monotonicity preserving schemes that also leads to limit functions is introduced. As the algebra is far too complicated for an analytical proof of smoothness, validation has been performed by a simple numerical methodology
Piecewise polynomial monotonic interpolation of 2D gridded data
International audienceA method for interpolating monotone increasing 2D scalar data with a monotone piecewise cubic C-continuous surface is presented. Monotonicity is a sufficient condition for a function to be free of critical points inside its domain. The standard axial monotonicity for tensor-product surfaces is however too restrictive. We therefore introduce a more relaxed monotonicity constraint. We derive sufficient conditions on the partial derivatives of the interpolating function to ensure its monotonicity. We then develop two algorithms to effectively construct a monotone C surface composed of cubic triangular Bézier surfaces interpolating a monotone gridded data set. Our method enables to interpolate given topological data such as minima, maxima and saddle points at the corners of a rectangular domain without adding spurious extrema inside the function domain. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the performance of the algorithm
Error bounded approximate reparametrization of NURBS curves
Journal ArticleThis paper reports research on solutions to the following reparametrization problem: approximate c(r(t)) by a NURBS where c is a NURBS curve and r may, or may not, be a NURBS function. There are many practical applications of this problem including establishing and exploring correspondence in geometry, creating related speed profiles along motion curves for animation, specifying speeds along tool paths, and identifying geometrically equivalent, or nearly equivalent, curve mappings. A framework for the approximation problem is described using two related algorithmic schemes. One constrains the shape of the approximation to be identical to the original curve c. The other relaxes this constraint. New algorithms for important cases of curve reparametrization are developed from within this framework. They produce results with bounded error and address approximate arc length parametrizations of curves, approximate inverses of NURBS functions, and reparametrizations that establish user specified tolerances as bounds on the Frechet distance between parametric curves
