Portrayal of Mental Illness on Television: A Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
The focus of this thesis is to present peer-reviewed studies relating to mental illness and television. Up to this point there has not been a review paper exclusively examining mental illness and television exclusively. For this review, only articles with a defined research design were included. Seven content analysis articles were identified measuring images of mental illness on television. Content analysis articles covered children's television, primetime entertainment programs, and soap operas. Five studies were identified surveying attitudes and beliefs of viewers after seeing images of mental illness on television. Research revealed that mental illness is portrayed negatively on television. Commonly, characters with mental illness are shown as violent, villainous, and unintelligent. Attitudes are affected by the number of hours of television watched, the viewer's education level, having direct experience with a person diagnosed with a mental illness, as well as seeing negative portrayals of mental illness on television. In the future, collaborative relationships to educate professionals working in media need to be established. Anti-stigma interventions should target specific populations that do not have regular contact with mentally ill patients. Future research needs to include the opinions and experiences of mental health service consumers. Current content analysis research focuses heavily on programs aired on American network television (ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox); in the future original programs on cable networks should be included in the samples. Similarly, unscripted reality television is gaining popularity and should be considered for analysis in the future. When attitudes and beliefs are measured, the samples of participants surveyed need to be made up of a wide range of ages, education levels, and experiences, instead of the homogenized groups currently being surveyed. Public health professionals have a responsibility to be advocates to the mental health community. It is of public health significance to ensure the most accurate information is disseminated to the general public in order to reduce incorrect assumptions and negative stigmas surrounding mental illness

Emerging from Anonymity: The First Generation of Writers of Songs and Drama in Mid-Ming Nanjing

This article traces the first generation of writers of songs and drama in Nanjing who emerged from the anonymous context of early Ming court entertainment and established their name and reputation in the second half of the fifteenth century. These writers—Shi Zhong (1437-after 1516), Chen Duo (1454?-1507?), and Xu Lin (1462-1538)—represented a different mode of writing songs and drama. For them it was no longer a professional occupation, as in the case of the court performers, but became part of their cultural and social life. The extent to which our knowledge of these first generation qu writers depends on local sources and on acts of remembrance by later Nanjing authors is also examined

Zhang Ruogu 張若谷(1905-1967), now known primarily as an urban writer,2 began his literary career by translating and commenting on French literature in newspapers and journals and subsequently published several urban stories. He was also an active advocate of urban life and played an important role in the introduction of the ideas of the French-style café gathering and European cultural trends. Zhang Ruogu’s literary activities, his admiration of French literature and culture, and his works inspired by the French literary works that he admired or translated, are the focus of investigation of this paper. From Paris to Shanghai and from 19th-century French literature to urban stories of Shanghai of the 1930s, these literary trends and works advanced through a process of translation and interpretation. What occurred during this translation and interpretation process? How does this examination aid us in understanding Zhang Ruogu’s own work and modern Chinese literature? This paper addresses Zhang Ruogu’s translations, adaptations and interpretations of French literature as well as his own literary works

Around the World in Two Days: Walt Disney\u27s Epcot Center and the World\u27s Fair Tradition

This work views the performative and consumerist traditions of the World\u27s Fair and how Walt Disney World\u27s EPCOT Center was essentially created to exist as a permanent World\u27s Fair in theme park form. From viewing the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis and the 1964-1965 New York World\u27s Fair alongside Epcot Center (1982) the similarities in the visitor experience are analyzed. Walt Disney\u27s presence at the 1964-1965 New York World\u27s Fair seems to work as testing grounds for ideas with lower stakes than presenting permanent attractions, some of which would later be moved to the parks. Epcot Center offered guests two main areas of entertainment, in a manner that mirrored the New York World’s Fair layout—Future World and World Showcase. Any guest can “visit” France, China, Italy, Germany, and beyond under one entrance fee, allowing them to try “authentic” food and see unique entertainment. Epcot and the World\u27s Fair present an this unique opportunity for visitors to travel the world, though it is important to recognize that these encounters are not entirely authentic
