The international Conference and Workshop on Lobster Biology and Management celebrates its 40th year!
[PREFACE] Once again, the International Conference and Workshop on Lobster Biology and
Management (ICWL) visited the shores of the northwest Atlantic Ocean, some of the
most productive lobster grounds on the planet. The University of Maine and Boston
University welcomed 257 attendees from 14 countries to Portland, Maine, from June
4 to 9, 2017. Hosted twice earlier in Atlantic Canada, this 11th ICWL was the first
time in the US Northeast, and fittingly, in the state nearly synonymous with lobster!
The Holiday Inn-by-the-Bay in downtown Portland proved to be the perfect central
venue to run our science sessions and socials over the course of the week, and to
savor the city’s many restaurants and waterfront activities overlooking Casco Bay.
This meeting also marked the ICWL’s 40th anniversary. In 1977, Bruce Phillips
(Western Australia Fisheries) and J Stanley Cobb (University of Rhode Island) organized
that first event in Perth, Australia, gathering a core group of 35 participants
from six countries. Their vision was to assemble scientists, fishery managers, and
industry members with common interests in lobsters of all stripes. The first meeting
resulted in the landmark two-volume set, The Biology and Management of Lobsters,
published in 1980. Its 18 peer-reviewed chapters comprise the first comprehensive
review of information on spiny, clawed, and slipper lobsters around the world. It also
identified knowledge gaps that spurred new and innovative research on lobster biology
and ecology that has informed the management of lobster fisheries in the ensuing
years. We stand on the shoulders of these originals who gave us a rich legacy
of scientific contributions and mentored a virtual army of students who have made
significant contributions in their own right.Published versio

Book Review: Russia Abroad: An Anthology of Modern Philosophical Thought
“In September and November 1922, two ‘philosophical steamboats-‘ – the “Oberburgomaster Haken” and the “Prussia”- transported about 160 people from the Soviet city of Petrograd to the German city of Stettin. ‘Outstanding figures of Russian philosophy, culture and science’ were forced to emigrate including Nikolai Berdyaev, Semyon Frank, Ivan Ilyin, Lev Karsavin, Nikolai Lossky and many others. ” This is how Mikhail Sergeev, Doctor of Philosophy of the University of the Arts (Philadelphia, USA), and the initiator and compiler of Russia Abroad: An Anthology of Modern Philosophical Thought begins his preface
Developing Teaching Materials Two-Dimensional Figure-Based on Palembang Local Cultural Context
Developing teaching materials is important to help students in learning mathematics especially for two-dimensional figure by using Palembang local cultural context. The purpose of the research was to develop whether the teaching materials two-dimensional figure-based on Palembang local cultural context are valid, practical, and have potential effect. The research method used research and development (R&D). The research consists of two stages, namely the preliminary stage and the formative evaluation stage. In one-to-one evaluation involved three students. Then, small group evaluation involved 9 (nine) students in the research. Meanwhile, in field test stage involved 29 students. Data collection techniques employed interviews, tests and documentation. The research was conducted in seventh graders at one of junior high school in Indonesia. The results of this study were the developed teaching materials were categorized as valid, practical and have potential effect. The average score of validity content, construct and product design were 3.65 which was very highly valid level. The practicality of one-to-one was 3.47 and small group evaluation was 3.61 which was at very highly practical level. The teaching materials were categorized as effective. It showed that there were 24 students (82.75%) out of 29 students (17.24%)
Sugar quotas: yes or no? : economic consequences for sector, chain, international market situation and third world

Distribution System Voltage Management and Optimization for Integration of Renewables and Electric Vehicles: Research Gap Analysis
California is striving to achieve 33% renewable penetration by 2020 in accordance with the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). The behavior of renewable resources and electric vehicles in distribution systems is creating constraints on the penetration of these resources into the distribution system. One such constraint is the ability of present-‐‑day voltage management methodologies to maintain proper distribution system voltage profiles in the face of higher penetrations of PV and electric vehicle technologies. This white paper describes the research gaps that have been identified in current Volt/VAR Optimization and Control (VVOC) technologies, the emerging technologies which are becoming available for use in VVOC, and the research gaps which exist and must be overcome in order to realize the full promise of these emerging technologies
