    Radio Resource Management Scheme for URLLC and EMBB coexistence in a Cell-Less Radio Access network

    We address the latency challenges in a high-density and high-load scenario for an ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) network which may coexist with enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) services in the evolving wireless communication networks. We propose a new radio resource management (RRM) scheme consisting of a combination of time domain (TD) and frequency domain (FD) schedulers specific for URLLC and eMBB users. We also develop a user ranking algorithm from a radio unit (RU) perspective, which is employed by the TD scheduler to increase the efficiency of scheduling in terms of resource consumption in large-scale networks. Therefore, the optimized and novel resource scheduling scheme reduces latency for the URLLC users (requesting a URLLC service) in an efficient resource utilization manner to support scenarios with high user density. At the same time, this RRM scheme, while minimizing the latency, it also overcomes another important challenge of eMBB users (requesting an eMBB service), namely the throughput of those who coexist in such highly loaded scenario with URLLC users. The effectiveness of our proposed scheme including time and frequency domain (TD and FD) schedulers is analyzed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the latency of URLLC users and throughput of the eMBB users compared to the baseline scheme. The proposed scheme has a 29% latency improvement for URLLC and 90% signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) improvement for eMBB users as compared with conventional scheduling policies.This work was supported by the European Union H2020 Research and Innovation Programme funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN TeamUp5G Project under Grant 813391

    Automotive Ethernet architecture and security: challenges and technologies

    Vehicle infrastructure must address the challenges posed by today's advances toward connected and autonomous vehicles. To allow for more flexible architectures, high-bandwidth connections and scalability are needed to connect many sensors and electronic control units (ECUs). At the same time, deterministic and low latency is a critical and significant design requirement to support urgent real-time applications in autonomous vehicles. As a recent solution, the time-sensitive network (TSN) was introduced as Ethernet-based amendments in IEEE 802.1 TSN standards to meet those needs. However, it had hurdle to be overcome before it can be used effectively. This paper discusses the latest studies concerning the automotive Ethernet requirements, including transmission delay studies to improve worst-case end-to-end delay and end-to-end jitter. Also, the paper focuses on the securing Ethernet-based in-vehicle networks (IVNs) by reviewing new encryption and authentication methods and approaches

Designing, dimensioning and optimization of communication networks resources and services have been an inseparable part of telecom network development. The latter must convey a large volume of traffic, providing service to traffic streams with highly differentiated requirements in terms of bit-rate and service time, required quality of service and quality of experience parameters.     Enabling Technologies for Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications: From PHY and MAC Layer Perspectives

Future 5th generation networks are expected to enable three key services-enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine type communications and ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC). As per the 3rd generation partnership project URLLC requirements, it is expected that the reliability of one transmission of a 32 byte packet will be at least 99.999% and the latency will be at most 1 ms. This unprecedented level of reliability and latency will yield various new applications, such as smart grids, industrial automation and intelligent transport systems. In this survey we present potential future URLLC applications, and summarize the corresponding reliability and latency requirements. We provide a comprehensive discussion on physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer techniques that enable URLLC, addressing both licensed and unlicensed bands. This paper evaluates the relevant PHY and MAC techniques for their ability to improve the reliability and reduce the latency. We identify that enabling long-term evolution to coexist in the unlicensed spectrum is also a potential enabler of URLLC in the unlicensed band, and provide numerical evaluations. Lastly, this paper discusses the potential future research directions and challenges in achieving the URLLC requirements

    Radiocommunication networks are one of the main support tools of agencies that carry out actions in Public Protection & Disaster Relief (PPDR), and it is necessary to update these communications technologies from narrowband to broadband and integrated to information technologies to have an effective action before society. Understanding that this problem includes, besides the technical aspects, issues related to the social context to which these systems are inserted, this study aims to construct scenarios, using several sources of information, that helps the managers of the PPDR agencies in the technological decisionmaking process of the Digital Transformation of Mission-Critical Communication considering Smart City scenarios, guided by the methods and approaches of Technological Assessment (TA).As redes de radiocomunicações são uma das principais ferramentas de apoio dos órgãos que realizam ações de Proteção Pública e Socorro em desastres, sendo necessário atualizar essas tecnologias de comunicação de banda estreita para banda larga, e integra- las às tecnologias de informação, para se ter uma atuação efetiva perante a sociedade .     Towards Scalable Design of Future Wireless Networks

    Wireless operators face an ever-growing challenge to meet the throughput and processing requirements of billions of devices that are getting connected. In current wireless networks, such as LTE and WiFi, these requirements are addressed by provisioning more resources: spectrum, transmitters, and baseband processors. However, this simple add-on approach to scale system performance is expensive and often results in resource underutilization. What are, then, the ways to efficiently scale the throughput and operational efficiency of these wireless networks? To answer this question, this thesis explores several potential designs: utilizing unlicensed spectrum to augment the bandwidth of a licensed network; coordinating transmitters to increase system throughput; and finally, centralizing wireless processing to reduce computing costs. First, we propose a solution that allows LTE, a licensed wireless standard, to co-exist with WiFi in the unlicensed spectrum. The proposed solution bridges the incompatibility between the fixed access of LTE, and the random access of WiFi, through channel reservation. It achieves a fair LTE-WiFi co-existence despite the transmission gaps and unequal frame durations. Second, we consider a system where different MIMO transmitters coordinate to transmit data of multiple users. We present an adaptive design of the channel feedback protocol that mitigates interference resulting from the imperfect channel information. Finally, we consider a Cloud-RAN architecture where a datacenter or a cloud resource processes wireless frames. We introduce a tree-based design for real-time transport of baseband samples and provide its end-to-end schedulability and capacity analysis. We also present a processing framework that combines real-time scheduling with fine-grained parallelism. The framework reduces processing times by migrating parallelizable tasks to idle compute resources, and thus, decreases the processing deadline-misses at no additional cost. We implement and evaluate the above solutions using software-radio platforms and off-the-shelf radios, and confirm their applicability in real-world settings.PhDElectrical Engineering: SystemsUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
