    Delay Estimation and Predictive Control of Uncertain Systems With Input Delay: Application to a DC Motor

    International audienceIt is well-known that standard predictive techniques are not very robust to parameter uncertainties and to external disturbances. Furthermore, they require the exact knowledge of the delay. In practice, these constraints are rarely satisfied. In this paper, solutions are presented to allow the use of predictive control in presence of external disturbances, parameter uncertainties and an unknown input delay. First, a recent predictive control method developed to attenuate the effect of external disturbances is shown to be also robust to parameter uncertainties. In addition, a delay estimator is presented to estimate unknown time-varying delays. Theoretical results are widely illustrated through experimental tests on a DC motor

    Design and implementation of event-based multi-rate controllers for networked control systems

    Tesis por compendio[ES] Con esta tesis se pretende dar solución a algunos de los problemas más habituales que aparecen en los Sistemas de control basados en red (NCS) como son los retardos variables en el tiempo, las pérdidas y el desorden de paquetes, y la restricción de ancho de banda y de recursos computacionales y energéticos de los dispositivos que forman parte del sistema de control. Para ello se ha planteado la integración de técnicas de control multifrecuencial, de control basado en paquetes, de control basado en predictor y de control basado en eventos. Los diseños de control realizados se han simulado utilizando Matlab-Simulink y Truetime, se ha analizado su estabilidad mediante LMIs y QFT, y se han validado experimentalmente en un péndulo invertido, un robot cartesiano 3D y en robots móviles de bajo coste. El artículo 1 aborda el control basado en eventos, el cual minimiza el ancho de banda consumido en el NCS mediante un control basado en eventos periódicos y presenta un método para obtener sus parámetros óptimos para el sistema específico en que se utilice. Los artículos 2, 4 y 6 añaden el control basado en paquetes, así como el control multifrecuencia, que aborda problemas de falta de datos por bajo uso del sensor y los retardos, pérdidas y desórdenes de paquetes en la red. También afrontan, mediante tecnicas de predicción basadas en un filtro de Kalman multifrecuencia variable en el tiempo, los problemas de ruido y perturbaciones, así como la observación de los estados completos del sistema. El artículo 7 hace frente a un modelo no lineal que utiliza las anteriores soluciones junto con un filtro de Kalman extendido para presentar otro tipo de estructura para un vehículo autónomo que, gracias a la información futura obtenida mediante estas técnicas, puede realizar de forma remota tareas de alto nivel como es la toma de decisiones y la monitorización de variables. Los artículos 3 y 5, presentan una forma de obtener y analizar la respuesta en frecuencia de sistemas SISO multifrecuencia y estudian su comportamiento ante ciertas incertidumbres o problemas en la red haciendo uso de procedimientos QFT.[CA] Amb aquesta tesi es pretén donar solució a alguns dels problemes més habituals que apareixen als Sistemes de Control Basats en xarxa (NCS) com son els retards d'accés i transferència variables en el temps, les pèrdues y desordenament de paquets, i la restricció d'ampli de banda així com de recursos computacionals i energètics dels dispositius que foment part del sistema de control. Per tal de resoldre'ls s'ha plantejat la integració de tècniques de control multifreqüencial, de control basat en paquets, de control basat en predictor i de control basat en events. Els dissenys de control realitzats s'han simulat fent ús de Matlab-Simulink i de TrueTime, s'ha analitzat la seua estabilitat mitjançant LMIs i QFT, i s'han validat experimentalment en un pèndul invertit, un robot cartesià 3D i en robots mòbils de baix cost. L'article 7 fa referència a un model no lineal que utilitza les anteriors solucions junt a un filtre de Kalman estès per a presentar altre tipus d'estructura per a un vehicle autònom que, gracies a la informació futura obtinguda mitjançant aquestes tècniques, pot realitzar de manera remota tasques d'alt nivell com son la presa de decisions i la monitorització de variables. Els articles 3 y 5 presenten la manera d'obtindre i analitzar la resposta en frequencia de sistemes SISO multifreqüència i estudien el seu comportament front a certes incerteses o problemes en la xarxa fent us de procediments QFT.[EN] This thesis attempts to solve some of the most frequent issues that appear in Networked Control Systems (NCS), such as time-varying delays, packet losses and packet disorders and the bandwidth limitation. Other frequent problems are scarce computational and energy resources of the local system devices. Thus, it is proposed to integrate multirate control, packet-based control, predictor-based control and event-based control techniques. The control designs have been simulated using Matlab-Simulink and Truetime, the stability has been analysed by LMIs and QFT, and the experimental validation has been done on an inverted pendulum, a 3D cartesian robot and in low-cost mobile robots. Paper 1 addresses event-based control, which minimizes the bandwidth consumed in NCS through a periodic event-triggered control and presents a method to obtain the optimal parameters for the specific system used. Papers 2, 4 and 6 include packet-based control and multirate control, addressing problems such as network delays, packet dropouts and packet disorders, and the scarce data due to low sensor usage in order to save battery in sensing tasks and transmissions of the sensed data. Also addressed, is how despite the existence of measurement noise and disturbances, time-varying dual-rate Kalman filter based prediction techniques observe the complete state of the system. Paper 7 tackles a non-linear model that uses all the previous solutions together with an extended Kalman filter to present another type of structure for an autonomous vehicle that, due to future information obtained through these techniques, can remotely carry out high level tasks, such as decision making and monitoring of variables.     Study on State Predictive Controllers for Networked Control System

    When different control components of a closed loop control system are connected through a common network channel then the resulting control system is a Networked Control System. This spatially distributed system has several advantages like reduced system wiring, easy fault detection and maintenance capability.Unfortunately the introduction of communication channel results in several disadvantages like network induced delays and packet dropouts leading to loss of synchronism in the control system. The network induced imperfections causes system instability and complexity for the control engineers to design a suitable controller in order to compensate their effect on closed loop control system. In addition to the complexity in design the network induced imperfections should be measured, analysed by incorporating them in the closed loop control system. The project investigates the problem of network induced time delays in a networked control system by studying the behaviour of network induced time delay in a control system controlled by Linear Quadratic controller or a Pole placement controller using the states obtained from discrete Kalman filter state estimation, which estimates the current state in the presence of state and output noises. Further a control augmentation method is used by incorporating network induced delay in the plant model control vector. The time delayed control vector creates difficulty in designing the controller which is solved by time shifting approach. Further a state predictor is designed by using plant model transition matrix to predict the future states from present and past values of control vector and state estimate. Hence an optimal predictive controller is designed wherein the Linear Quadratic or pole placement controller uses the predictive state obtained from the state predictor to compensate the effect of network induced time delay and improve the control system performance

    Stabilization and control of teleoperation systems with time delays

    A control scheme for teleoperation systems with time delay is developed based on the concept of passivity. This control method requires neither detailed knowledge of the manipulator systems nor the mathematical models of the environments, and it is applicable for any time delays. The main contribution of this method is that it is less conservative than the traditional passivity based method. In this method, the passivity controller only operates when the system loses passivity, while in a traditional passivity formulation, the controller works at all times during operation and thus adversely affect the performance of the system.;Using the proposed control scheme, a sub-system is defined that is composed of the communication channel, slave robot and the manipulated environment. This sub system is treated as a one-port network component, and passivity theory is applied to this component to assure stability. The energy flowing into the one-port network, in the form of the control command and the force feedback, is monitored. A passivity regulator is activated to maintain the passivity of the network by modifying the feedback force to the master, and thus adjust the energy exchange between the master and the communication channel.;When this method is applied, only the information at the interface between the master manipulator and the communication channel is collected and observed, there is no need for accurate or detailed knowledge of the structure or timing of the communication channel. The method can make the system lossless regardless of the feedback force, the coordinating force controlling the slave joint motions or the contact force. The approach can stabilize the system regardless of the time delay, discontinuities with environmental contact, or discretization of the physical plant. It will pose no problem when the environmental contact force is directly fed back. The results of this work show that it is advantageous to use the measured environmental force as the feedback, providing superior performance for free motion and more realistic haptic feedback for the operator from the remote environment.;Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed control scheme

In this paper, a bibliographical review on distributed Kalman filtering (DKF) is provided.\ud The paper contains a classification of different approaches and methods involved to DKF. The applications of DKF are also discussed and explained separately. A comparison of different approaches is briefly carried out. Focuses on the contemporary research are also addressed with emphasis on the practical applications of the techniques. An exhaustive list of publications, linked directly or indirectly to DKF in the open literature, is compiled to provide an overall picture of different developing aspects of this area

    Real-time Adaptive Detection and Recovery against Sensor Attacks in Cyber-physical Systems

    Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) utilize computation to control physical objects in real-world environments, and an increasing number of CPS-based applications have been designed for life-critical purposes. Sensor attacks, which manipulate sensor readings to deceive CPSs into performing dangerous actions, can result in severe consequences. This urgent need has motivated significant research into reactive defense. In this dissertation, we present an adaptive detection method capable of identifying sensor attacks before the system reaches unsafe states. Once the attacks are detected, a recovery approach that we propose can guide the physical plant to a desired safe state before a safety deadline.Existing detection approaches tend to minimize detection delay and false alarms simultaneously, despite a clear trade-off between these two metrics. We argue that attack detection should dynamically balance these metrics according to the physical system\u27s current state. In line with this argument, we propose an adaptive sensor attack detection system comprising three components: an adaptive detector, a detection deadline estimator, and a data logger. This system can adapt the detection delay and thus false alarms in real-time to meet a varying detection deadline, thereby improving usability. We implement our detection system and validate it using multiple CPS simulators and a reduced-scale autonomous vehicle testbed. After identifying sensor attacks, it is essential to extend the benefits of attack detection. In this dissertation, we investigate how to eliminate the impact of these attacks and propose novel real-time recovery methods for securing CPSs. Initially, we target sensor attack recovery in linear CPSs. By employing formal methods, we are able to reconstruct state estimates and calculate a conservative safety deadline. With these constraints, we formulate the recovery problem as either a linear programming or a quadratic programming problem. By solving this problem, we obtain a recovery control sequence that can smoothly steer a physical system back to a target state set before a safe deadline and maintain the system state within the set once reached. Subsequently, to make recovery practical for complex CPSs, we adapt our recovery method for nonlinear systems and explore the use of uncorrupted sensors to alleviate uncertainty accumulation. Ultimately, we implement our approach and showcase its effectiveness and efficiency through an extensive set of experiments. For linear CPSs, we evaluate the approach using 5 CPS simulators and 3 types of sensor attacks. For nonlinear CPSs, we assess our method on 3 nonlinear benchmarks
