Intelligent Management of Mobile Systems through Computational Self-Awareness
Runtime resource management for many-core systems is increasingly complex.
The complexity can be due to diverse workload characteristics with conflicting
demands, or limited shared resources such as memory bandwidth and power.
Resource management strategies for many-core systems must distribute shared
resource(s) appropriately across workloads, while coordinating the high-level
system goals at runtime in a scalable and robust manner.
To address the complexity of dynamic resource management in many-core
systems, state-of-the-art techniques that use heuristics have been proposed.
These methods lack the formalism in providing robustness against unexpected
runtime behavior. One of the common solutions for this problem is to deploy
classical control approaches with bounds and formal guarantees. Traditional
control theoretic methods lack the ability to adapt to (1) changing goals at
runtime (i.e., self-adaptivity), and (2) changing dynamics of the modeled
system (i.e., self-optimization).
In this chapter, we explore adaptive resource management techniques that
provide self-optimization and self-adaptivity by employing principles of
computational self-awareness, specifically reflection. By supporting these
self-awareness properties, the system can reason about the actions it takes by
considering the significance of competing objectives, user requirements, and
operating conditions while executing unpredictable workloads

key issue to increase performance in SMT processors. Recent
work has focused on resource sharing policies to enhance the
processor performance, but their proposals mainly concentrate on
novel hardware mechanisms that adapt to the dynamic resource
requirements of the running threads.
This work addresses the L1 cache bandwidth problem in SMT
processors experimentally on real hardware. Unlike previous
work, this paper concentrates on thread allocation, by selecting
the proper pair of co-runners to be launched to the same
core. The relation between L1 bandwidth requirements of each
benchmark and its performance (IPC) is analyzed. We found that
for individual benchmarks, performance is strongly connected to
L1 bandwidth consumption, and this observation remains valid
when several co-runners are launched to the same SMT core.
Based on these findings we propose two L1 bandwidth
aware thread to core (t2c) allocation policies, namely Static and
Dynamic t2c allocation, respectively. The aim of these policies is
to properly balance L1 bandwidth requirements of the running
threads among the processor cores. Experiments on a Xeon E5645
processor show that the proposed policies significantly improve
the performance of the Linux OS kernel regardless the number

Predictive Dynamic Thermal and Power Management for Heterogeneous Mobile Platforms
abstract: Heterogeneous multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoCs) powering mobile platforms integrate multiple asymmetric CPU cores, a GPU, and many specialized processors. When the MPSoC operates close to its peak performance, power dissipation easily increases the temperature, hence adversely impacts reliability. Since using a fan is not a viable solution for hand-held devices, there is a strong need for dynamic thermal and power management (DTPM) algorithms that can regulate temperature with minimal performance impact. This abstract presents a DTPM algorithm based on a practical temperature prediction methodology using system identification. The DTPM algorithm dynamically computes a power budget using the predicted temperature, and controls the types and number of active processors as well as their frequencies. Experiments on an octa-core big.LITTLE processor and common Android apps demonstrate that the proposed technique predicts temperature within 3% accuracy, while the DTPM algorithm provides around 6x reduction in temperature variance, and as large as 16% reduction in total platform power compared to using a fan.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Electrical Engineering 201

A generalized software framework for accurate and efficient management of performance goals
A number of techniques have been proposed to provide runtime performance guarantees while minimizing power consumption. One drawback of existing approaches is that they work only on a fixed set of components (or actuators) that must be specified at design time. If new components become available, these management systems must be redesigned and reimplemented. In this paper, we propose PTRADE, a novel performance management framework that is general with respect to the components it manages. PTRADE can be deployed to work on a new system with different components without redesign and reimplementation. PTRADE's generality is demonstrated through the management of performance goals for a variety of benchmarks on two different Linux/x86 systems and a simulated 128-core system, each with different components governing power and performance tradeoffs. Our experimental results show that PTRADE provides generality while meeting performance goals with low error and close to optimal power consumption.United States. Intelligent systems for efficiency and security
As computing becomes ubiquitous and personalized, resources like energy, storage and time are becoming increasingly scarce and, at the same time, computing systems must deliver in multiple dimensions, such as high performance, quality of service, reliability, security and low power. Building such computers is hard, particularly when the operating environment is becoming more dynamic, and systems are becoming heterogeneous and distributed.
Unfortunately, computers today manage resources with many ad hoc heuristics that are suboptimal, unsafe, and cannot be composed across the computer’s subsystems. Continuing this approach has severe consequences: underperforming systems, resource waste, information loss, and even life endangerment.
This dissertation research develops computing systems which, through intelligent adaptation, deliver efficiency along multiple dimensions. The key idea is to manage computers with principled methods from formal control. It is with these methods that the multiple subsystems of a computer sense their environment and configure themselves to meet system-wide goals.
To achieve the goal of intelligent systems, this dissertation makes a series of contributions, each building on the previous. First, it introduces the use of formal MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) control for processors, to simultaneously optimize many goals like performance, power, and temperature. Second, it develops the Yukta control system, which uses coordinated formal controllers in different layers of the stack (hardware and operating system). Third, it uses robust control to develop a fast, globally coordinated and decentralized control framework called Tangram, for heterogeneous computers. Finally, it presents Maya, a defense against power side-channel attacks that uses formal control to reshape the power dissipated by a computer, confusing the attacker. The ideas in the dissertation have been demonstrated successfully with several prototypes, including one built along with AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.) engineers. These designs significantly outperformed the state of the art.
The research in this dissertation brought formal control closer to computer architecture and has been well-received in both domains. It has the first application of full-fledged MIMO control for processors, the first use of robust control in computer systems, and the first application of formal control for side-channel defense.
