    Control of Flexible Manipulator Robots Based on Dynamic Confined Space of Velocities: Dynamic Programming Approach

    Linear Parameter Varying models-based Model Predictive Control (LPV-MPC) has stood out in manipulator robots because it presents well-rejection to dynamic uncertainties in flexible joints. However, it has become too weak when the MPC's optimization problem does not include kinematic constraints-based conditions. This paper uses dynamic confined space of velocities (DCSV) to include these conditions as a recursive polytopic constraint, guaranteeing optimal dependency on a simplex scheduling parameter. To this end, the local frame's velocities and torque/force preload of joints (related to violation of kinematic constraints) are associated with different time scale dynamics such that DCSV correlates them as a polytope. So, a classical LPV-MPC will be updated using a dynamic programming approach according to the DCSV-based polytope. As a result, one lemma about DCSV-based recursive polytope and a five-step procedure for two decoupled close-loop schemes with different time scales compose the LPV-MPC proposed method. Numerical validation shows that even for relevant flexibility situations, trajectory tracking performance is improved by tuning finite horizons and optimization problem constraints regarding DCSV's behavior

    LPV control and virtual-sensor-based fault tolerant strategies for a three-axis gimbal system

    This paper deals with the LPV control of a three-axis gimbal including fault-tolerant capabilities. First, the derivation of an analytical model for the considered system based on the robotics Serial-Link (SL) theory is derived. Then, a series of simplifications that allow obtaining a quasi-LPV model for the considered gimbal is proposed. Gain scheduling LPV controllers with PID structure are designed using pole placement by means of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Moreover, exploiting the sensor redundancy available in the gimbal, a virtual-sensor-based fault tolerant control (FTC) strategy is proposed. This virtual sensor uses a Recursive Least Square (RLS) estimation algorithm and an LPV observer for fault detection and estimation.     ParNMPC – a parallel optimisation toolkit for real-time nonlinear model predictive control

    Real-time optimisation for nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) has always been challenging, especially for fast-sampling and large-scale applications. This paper presents an efficient implementation of a highly parallelisable method for NMPC, called ParNMPC. The implementation details of ParNMPC are introduced, including a dedicated discretisation method suitable for parallelisation, a framework that unifies search direction calculation done using Newton's method and the parallel method, line search methods for guaranteeing convergence, and a warm start strategy for the interior-point method. To assess the performance of ParNMPC under different configurations, three experiments including a closed-loop simulation of a quadrotor, a real-world control example of a laboratory helicopter and a closed-loop simulation of a robot manipulator are shown. These experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of ParNMPC both in serial and parallel

    Observer-based robust fault estimation for fault-tolerant control

    A control system is fault-tolerant if it possesses the capability of optimizing the system stability and admissible performance subject to bounded faults, complexity and modeling uncertainty. Based on this definition this thesis is concerned with the theoretical developments of the combination of robust fault estimation (FE) and robust active fault tolerant control (AFTC) for systems with both faults and uncertainties.This thesis develops robust strategies for AFTC involving a joint problem of on-line robust FE and robust adaptive control. The disturbances and modeling uncertainty affect the FE and FTC performance. Hence, the proposed robust observer-based fault estimator schemes are combined with several control methods to achieve the desired system performance and robust active fault tolerance. The controller approaches involve concepts of output feedback control, adaptive control, robust observer-based state feedback control. A new robust FE method has been developed initially to take into account the joint effect of both fault and disturbance signals, thereby rejecting the disturbances and enhancing the accuracy of the fault estimation. This is then extended to encompass the robustness with respect to modeling uncertainty.As an extension to the robust FE and FTC scheme a further development is made for direct application to smooth non-linear systems via the use of linear parameter-varying systems (LPV) modeling.The main contributions of the research are thus:- The development of a robust observer-based FE method and integration design for the FE and AFTC systems with the bounded time derivative fault magnitudes, providing the solution based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) methodology. A stability proof for the integrated design of the robust FE within the FTC system.- An improvement is given to the proposed robust observer-based FE method and integrated design for FE and AFTC systems under the existence of different disturbance structures.- New guidance for the choice of learning rate of the robust FE algorithm.- Some improvement compared with the recent literature by considering the FTC problem in a more general way, for example by using LPV modeling

    A New Approach to Time-Optimal Path Parameterization based on Reachability Analysis

    Time-Optimal Path Parameterization (TOPP) is a well-studied problem in robotics and has a wide range of applications. There are two main families of methods to address TOPP: Numerical Integration (NI) and Convex Optimization (CO). NI-based methods are fast but difficult to implement and suffer from robustness issues, while CO-based approaches are more robust but at the same time significantly slower. Here we propose a new approach to TOPP based on Reachability Analysis (RA). The key insight is to recursively compute reachable and controllable sets at discretized positions on the path by solving small Linear Programs (LPs). The resulting algorithm is faster than NI-based methods and as robust as CO-based ones (100% success rate), as confirmed by extensive numerical evaluations. Moreover, the proposed approach offers unique additional benefits: Admissible Velocity Propagation and robustness to parametric uncertainty can be derived from it in a simple and natural way.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    On-line estimation approaches to fault-tolerant control of uncertain systems

    This thesis is concerned with fault estimation in Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) and as such involves the joint problem of on-line estimation within an adaptive control system. The faults that are considered are significant uncertainties affecting the control variables of the process and their estimates are used in an adaptive control compensation mechanism. The approach taken involves the active FTC, as the faults can be considered as uncertainties affecting the control system. The engineering (application domain) challenges that are addressed are: (1) On-line model-based fault estimation and compensation as an FTC problem, for systems with large but bounded fault magnitudes and for which the faults can be considered as a special form of dynamic uncertainty. (2) Fault-tolerance in the distributed control of uncertain inter-connected systems The thesis also describes how challenge (1) can be used in the distributed control problem of challenge (2). The basic principle adopted throughout the work is that the controller has two components, one involving the nominal control action and the second acting as an adaptive compensation for significant uncertainties and fault effects. The fault effects are a form of uncertainty which is considered too large for the application of passive FTC methods. The thesis considers several approaches to robust control and estimation: augmented state observer (ASO); sliding mode control (SMC); sliding mode fault estimation via Sliding Mode Observer (SMO); linear parameter-varying (LPV) control; two-level distributed control with learning coordination

    Condition-based design of variable impedance controllers from user demonstrations

    This paper presents an approach to ensure conditions on Variable Impedance Controllers through the off-line tuning of the parameters involved in its description. In particular, we prove its application to term modulations defined by a Learning from Demonstration technique. This is performed through the assessment of conditions regarding safety and performance, which encompass heuristics and constraints in the form of Linear Matrix Inequalities. Latter ones allow to define a convex optimisation problem to analyse their fulfilment, and require a polytopic description of the VIC, in this case, obtained from its formulation as a discrete-time Linear Parameter Varying system. With respect to the current state-of-art, this approach only limits the term definition obtained by the Learning from Demonstration technique to be continuous and function of exogenous signals, i.e. external variables to the robot. Therefore, using a solution-search method, the most suitable set of parameters according to assessment criteria can be obtained. Using a 7-DoF KinovaGen3 manipulator, validation and comparison against solutions with relaxed conditions are performed. The method is applied to generate Variable Impedance Controllers for a pulley belt looping task, inspired by the Assembly Challenge for Industrial Robotics in World Robot Summit 2018, to reduce the exerted force with respect to a standard (constant) Impedance Controller. These controllers fulfil a set of safety constraints, namely stability, bounds on task variables and maximum response overshooting; and their performance is determined by the User Preference heuristic, which allows to intuitively define the desired compliant behaviour along the task.     Motion planning and control methods for nonprehensile manipulation and multi-contact locomotion tasks

    Many existing works in the robotic literature deal with the problem of nonprehensile dynamic manipulation. However, a unified control framework does not exist so far. One of the ambitious goals of this Thesis is to contribute to identify planning and control frameworks solving classes of nonprehensile dynamic manipulation tasks, dealing with the non linearity of their dynamic models and, consequently, with the inherited design complexity. Besides, while passing through a number of connections between dynamic nonprehensile manipulation and legged locomotion, the Thesis presents novel methods for generating walking motions in multi-contact situations

    Robust and Multi-Objective Model Predictive Control Design for Nonlinear Systems

    The multi-objective trade-off paradigm has become a very valuable design tool in engineering problems that have conflicting objectives. Recently, many control designers have worked on the design methods which satisfy multiple design specifications called multi-objective control design. However,the main challenge posed for the MPC design lies in the high computation load preventing its application to the fast dynamic system control in real-time. To meet this challenge, this thesis has proposed several methods covering nonlinear system modeling, on-line MPC design and multi-objective optimization. First, the thesis has proposed a robust MPC to control the shimmy vibration of the landing gear with probabilistic uncertainty. Then, an on-line MPC method has been proposed for image-based visual servoing control of a 6 DOF Denso robot. Finally, a multi-objective MPC has been introduced to allow the designers consider multiple objectives in MPC design. In this thesis, Tensor Product (TP) model transformation as a powerful tool in the modeling of the complex nonlinear systems is used to find the linear parameter-varying (LPV) models of the nonlinear systems. Higher-order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) technique is used to obtain a minimal order of the model tensor. Furthermore, to design a robust MPC for nonlinear systems in the presence of uncertainties which degrades the system performance and can lead to instability, we consider the parameters of the nonlinear systems with probabilistic uncertainties in the modeling using TP transformation. In this thesis, a computationally efficient methods for MPC design of image-based visual servoing, i.e. a fast dynamic system has been proposed. The controller is designed considering the robotic visual servoing system's input and output constraints, such as robot physical limitations and visibility constraints. The main contributions of this thesis are: (i) design MPC for nonlinear systems with probabilistic uncertainties that guarantees robust stability and performance of the systems; (ii) develop a real-time MPC method for a fast dynamical system; (iii) to propose a new multi-objective MPC for nonlinear systems using game theory. A diverse range of systems with nonlinearities and uncertainties including landing gear system, 6 DOF Denso robot are studied in this thesis. The simulation and real-time experimental results are presented and discussed in this thesis to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods

    Robust explicit model predictive control for hybrid linear systems with parameter uncertainties

    Explicit model-predictive control (MPC) is a widely used control design method that employs optimization tools to find control policies offline; commonly it is posed as a semi-definite program (SDP) or as a mixed-integer SDP in the case of hybrid systems. However, mixed-integer SDPs are computationally expensive, motivating alternative formulations, such as zonotope-based MPC (zonotopes are a special type of symmetric polytopes). In this paper, we propose a robust explicit MPC method applicable to hybrid systems. More precisely, we extend existing zonotope-based MPC methods to account for multiplicative parametric uncertainty. Additionally, we propose a convex zonotope order reduction method that takes advantage of the iterative structure of the zonotope propagation problem to promote diagonal blocks in the zonotope generators and lower the number of decision variables. Finally, we developed a quasi-time-free policy choice algorithm, allowing the system to start from any point on the trajectory and avoid chattering associated with discrete switching of linear control policies based on the current state's membership in state-space regions. Last but not least, we verify the validity of the proposed methods on two experimental setups, varying physical parameters between experiments
