The relationships between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and consumer behaviors have been widely explored in the literature. From the consumer standpoint, it has been shown that individuals largely want to be socially responsible actors and that, more than ever, they consider the CSR aspects of products or services when contemplating purchasing decisions. We utilize data from 23,247 online auctions conducted before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to analyze in what way consumer preferences might be influenced by how the CSR characteristics of products are touted in their descriptions. We find that a greater CSR emphasis is positively associated with an increased prospect of an online auction item selling. Additionally, we find CSR is valued more by consumers during a period of economic hardship and social uncertainty (COVID-19). Finally, we find that profit-seeking behaviors by intermediary auction house brokers undermine the effect of CSR on consumer purchasing behavior

Buyer behavior of consumers plays one of the key roles in fulfillment of the main goals of a company. It is influenced by many external and internal factors but the company can also influence the final process of buyer decision-making process significantly by its activities. The subject matter of this article is an analysis of the features of online buyer behavior compared to the general regularities of buyer behavior, definition of the main motives of online shopping, and description of the current trends. The article uses the basic terminology of this subject and current bibliography as well as other resources. Theoretical knowledge is based on historic directions of Maslow’s theory of motivation where it is possible to find the basis for a buyer behavior analysis. The article is also based on the formerly carried out questionnaire survey which examines the motives and experience of the respondents with online shopping. By means of the independence test it is verified whether there is a relation between the age of respondents and motivation for online shopping. Subsequently, the survey carried out in person is compared with other relevant research solutions

An Empirical Investigation of Bidding Strategies and Their Effects on Online Single-Unit Auctions

    Get PDF
Online bidding strategy is one of the most discussed topics in online auction research. This research aims to empirically confirm online bidding strategies in single-unit auctions and evaluate these strategies in the context of auction winning outcome, final price evaluation, and perceived enjoyment. Both objective and subjective data of online single-unit auctions were collected to validate our postulated hypotheses. Our findings suggest that there are three basic bidding strategies in single-unit auctions and they indeed have different impacts on auction biddings

Software Characteristics of B2B Electronic Intermediaries: A Novel Design Science Approach

    Get PDF
Long being seen as commercially unsuccessful after the dot-com era, web-based B2B electronic intermediaries are currentlyundergoing a renaissance driven by globalization and an ever increasing cost-pressure on procurement departments ofenterprises. These systems are getting more sophisticated almost by the day, which is also reflected by numerous relatedscientific articles. This development raises the question of the latest characteristics of such systems scientifically described. In order to answer this question, the work at hand depicts the results of a novel design science approach based on a structuredliterature review. The outcomes of this research are i) a state-of-the-art overview of scientifically described softwarecharacteristics of B2B electronic intermediaries, and ii) a taxonomy for structuring software characteristics of this type ofsystems. The results may help practitioners to further develop B2B electronic intermediaries and e-procurement systems, andwill serve as a basis for future research endeavors in the field

International Cooperation to Resolve International Pollution Problems

This article provides a non-technical overview of important results of the game theoretical literature on the formation and stability of international environmental agreements (IEAs) on transboundary pollution control. It starts out by sketching features of first and second best solutions to the problem of transboundary pollution. It then argues that most actual IEAs can be considered at best as third best solutions. Therefore, three questions are raised: 1) Why is there a difference between actual IEAs and first and second best solutions? 2) Which factors determine this difference? 3) Which measures can help to narrow this difference? This article attempts to answer these questions after giving an informal introduction to coalition models.International pollution, International environmental agreements, Treaty design, Coalition theory

Factors affecting the adoption of online auctions by internet users in Hong Kong

This is an exploratory empirical study with the aim to identify the factors that affect the adoption of online auctions by Internet users in Hong Kong. The frameworks used were the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model), TCE (Transaction Cost Economics) and SERVQUAL (Service Quality). It was found that the dimensions that affected the customer’s perceived value of the online auction are benefits, costs, risks and service quality. Data was collected from four pilot focus groups, one online survey and a final focus group. The subjects in the focus groups were 21 undergraduates, whereas the subjects in the online survey were 152 internet users. The results of the pilot focus groups guided the design of the online survey. The results of the survey was analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The final focus group was used to seek explanations to some issues arose from the online survey. It was found that the factors in the benefit dimension were liquidity, enjoyment, and price transparency. The factors in the cost dimension were time, effort, service charge and reputation of the user. The factor in the risk dimension was financial risk. The factors in the service quality dimension were efficiency and system availability. The final focus group revealed that the auctioneer’s role in policing the auction web site was important. For differences among the subjects, it was also found that the adult users consider their reputation in auction website, young adults are worried about financial risks, and female users are more concerned about financial risks than male users. The implications of these differences are discussed. The main academic contribution was the development of a questionnaire and a model which can be used in further research about other forms of auction

Unveiling the features of successful ebay sellers of smartphones: a data mining sales predictive model

    Get PDF
JEL Classification guidelines (M310); (C380).EBay is one of the largest online retailing corporations worldwide, providing numerous ways for customer feedback on registered sellers. In accordance, with the advent of Web 2.0 and online shopping, an immensity of data is collected from manifold devices. This data is often unstructured, which inevitably asks for some form of further treatment that allows classification, discovery of patterns and trends or prediction of outcomes. That treatment implies the usage of increasingly complex and combined statistical tools as the size of datasets builds up. Nowadays, datasets may extend to several exabytes, which can be transformed into knowledge using adequate methods. The aim of the present study is to evaluate and analyse which and in what way seller and product attributes such as feedback ratings and price influence sales of smartphones on eBay using data mining framework and techniques. The methods used include SVM algorithms for modelling the sales of smartphones by eBay sellers combined with 10-fold cross-validation scheme which ensured model robustness and employment of metrics MAE, RAE and NMAE for the sake of gauging prediction accuracy followed by sensitivity analysis in order to assess the influence of individual features on sales. The methods were considered effective for both modelling evaluation and knowledge extraction reaching positive results although with some discrepancies between different prediction accuracy metrics. Lastly, it was discovered that the number of items in auction, average price and the variety of products available from a given seller were the most significant attributes, i.e., the largest contributors for sales.O EBay Ă© uma das plataformas e retalho online de maior dimensĂŁo e abarca inĂșmeras oportunidades de extração de dados de feedback dos consumidores sobre vĂĄrios vendedores.

The virtues and vices of equilibrium and the future of financial economics

    Get PDF
The use of equilibrium models in economics springs from the desire for parsimonious models of economic phenomena that take human reasoning into account. This approach has been the cornerstone of modern economic theory. We explain why this is so, extolling the virtues of equilibrium theory; then we present a critique and describe why this approach is inherently limited, and why economics needs to move in new directions if it is to continue to make progress. We stress that this shouldn't be a question of dogma, but should be resolved empirically. There are situations where equilibrium models provide useful predictions and there are situations where they can never provide useful predictions. There are also many situations where the jury is still out, i.e., where so far they fail to provide a good description of the world, but where proper extensions might change this. Our goal is to convince the skeptics that equilibrium models can be useful, but also to make traditional economists more aware of the limitations of equilibrium models. We sketch some alternative approaches and discuss why they should play an important role in future research in economics.Comment: 68 pages, one figur

Topics in Behavioural Economics - Information and Fairness

    Get PDF
This thesis dwells upon topics in behavioural economics: information and fairness, with five research papers. The first two contributions are concerned with the extension of standard auction formats with information acquisition strategies. The third paper addresses global games framed as a speculative attack and tests theoretical predictions for risk and ambiguity. The fourth contribution deals with disclosing conflicts of interest, where one player has a monetary incentive to deceive. The last paper extends a standard model of social preferences with a second fairness dimension and studies how economic agents distort fairness norms exhibiting a self-serving bias effect
