A macro-micro robot for precise force applications
This paper describes an 8 degree-of-freedom macro-micro robot capable of performing tasks which require accurate force control. Applications such as polishing, finishing, grinding, deburring, and cleaning are a few examples of tasks which need this capability. Currently these tasks are either performed manually or with dedicated machinery because of the lack of a flexible and cost effective tool, such as a programmable force-controlled robot. The basic design and control of the macro-micro robot is described in this paper. A modular high-performance multiprocessor control system was designed to provide sufficient compute power for executing advanced control methods. An 8 degree of freedom macro-micro mechanism was constructed to enable accurate tip forces. Control algorithms based on the impedance control method were derived, coded, and load balanced for maximum execution speed on the multiprocessor system
Advanced Strategies for Robot Manipulators
Amongst the robotic systems, robot manipulators have proven themselves to be of increasing importance and are widely adopted to substitute for human in repetitive and/or hazardous tasks. Modern manipulators are designed complicatedly and need to do more precise, crucial and critical tasks. So, the simple traditional control methods cannot be efficient, and advanced control strategies with considering special constraints are needed to establish. In spite of the fact that groundbreaking researches have been carried out in this realm until now, there are still many novel aspects which have to be explored
Printing-while-moving: a new paradigm for large-scale robotic 3D Printing
Building and Construction have recently become an exciting application ground
for robotics. In particular, rapid progress in materials formulation and in
robotics technology has made robotic 3D Printing of concrete a promising
technique for in-situ construction. Yet, scalability remains an important
hurdle to widespread adoption: the printing systems (gantry- based or
arm-based) are often much larger than the structure to be printed, hence
cumbersome. Recently, a mobile printing system - a manipulator mounted on a
mobile base - was proposed to alleviate this issue: such a system, by moving
its base, can potentially print a structure larger than itself. However, the
proposed system could only print while being stationary, imposing thereby a
limit on the size of structures that can be printed in a single take. Here, we
develop a system that implements the printing-while-moving paradigm, which
enables printing single-piece structures of arbitrary sizes with a single
robot. This development requires solving motion planning, localization, and
motion control problems that are specific to mobile 3D Printing. We report our
framework to address those problems, and demonstrate, for the first time, a
printing-while-moving experiment, wherein a 210 cm x 45 cm x 10 cm concrete
structure is printed by a robot arm that has a reach of 87 cm.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figur
NASA Automated Rendezvous and Capture Review. Executive summary
In support of the Cargo Transfer Vehicle (CTV) Definition Studies in FY-92, the Advanced Program Development division of the Office of Space Flight at NASA Headquarters conducted an evaluation and review of the United States capabilities and state-of-the-art in Automated Rendezvous and Capture (AR&C). This review was held in Williamsburg, Virginia on 19-21 Nov. 1991 and included over 120 attendees from U.S. government organizations, industries, and universities. One hundred abstracts were submitted to the organizing committee for consideration. Forty-two were selected for presentation. The review was structured to include five technical sessions. Forty-two papers addressed topics in the five categories below: (1) hardware systems and components; (2) software systems; (3) integrated systems; (4) operations; and (5) supporting infrastructure
A comparison of the Shuttle remote manipulator system and the Space Station Freedom mobile servicing center
The Shuttle Remote Manipulator System is a mature system which has successfully completed 18 flights. Its primary functional design driver was the capability to deploy and retrieve payloads from the Orbiter cargo bay. The Space Station Freedom Mobile Servicing Center is still in the requirements definition and early design stage. Its primary function design drivers are the capabilities: to support Space Station construction and assembly tasks; to provide external transportation about the Space Station; to provide handling capabilities for the Orbiter, free flyers, and payloads; to support attached payload servicing in the extravehicular environment; and to perform scheduled and un-scheduled maintenance on the Space Station. The differences between the two systems in the area of geometric configuration, mobility, sensor capabilities, control stations, control algorithms, handling performance, end effector dexterity, and fault tolerance are discussed
