    An Analytical Model for Repositioning of 6 D.O.F Fixturing System

Even if the part is positioned correctly, the external machining forces and clamping load cause the part to deviate from its position. This deviation depends on the external load and the fixture stiffness. In this article, a comprehensive analytical model of a 3-2-1 fixturing system is proposed, consisting of a kinematic and a mechanical part. The kinematic model relocates the initially misplaced workpiece in the machine reference through the axial advancements of six locators taking all the fixturing elements to be rigid. The repositioned part then shifts again from the corrected position due to the deformation of fixturing elements under clamping and machining forces. The mechanical model calculates this displacement of the part considering the locators and clamps to be elastic. The rigid cuboid baseplate, used to precisely re-locate the workpiece, is also considered elastic at the interface with the locators. Using small displacement hypothesis with zero friction at the contact points, Lagrangian formulation enables us to calculate the rigid body displacement of the workpiece, deformation of each locator, as well as the stiffness matrix and mechanical behavior of the fixturing system. This displacement of the workpiece is then finally compensated by the advancement of the six axial locators calculated through the kinematic model

    On the contact detection for contact-impact analysis in multibody systems

    One of the most important and complex parts of the simulation of multibody systems with contact-impact involves the detection of the precise instant of impact. In general, the periods of contact are very small and, therefore, the selection of the time step for the integration of the time derivatives of the state variables plays a crucial role in the dynamics of multibody systems. The conservative approach is to use very small time steps throughout the analysis. However, this solution is not efficient from the computational view point. When variable time step integration algorithms are used and the pre-impact dynamics does not involve high-frequencies the integration algorithms may use larger time steps and the contact between two surfaces may start with initial penetrations that are artificially high. This fact leads either to a stall of the integration algorithm or to contact forces that are physically impossible which, in turn, lead to post-impact dynamics that is unrelated to the physical problem. The main purpose of this work is to present a general and comprehensive approach to automatically adjust the time step, in variable time step integration algorithms, in the vicinity of contact of multibody systems. The proposed methodology ensures that for any impact in a multibody system the time step of the integration is such that any initial penetration is below any prescribed threshold. In the case of the start of contact, and after a time step is complete, the numerical error control of the selected integration algorithm is forced to handle the physical criteria to accept/reject time steps in equal terms with the numerical error control that it normally uses. The main features of this approach are the simplicity of its computational implementation, its good computational efficiency and its ability to deal with the transitions between non contact and contact situations in multibody dynamics.     Multibody approach for railway dynamic analysis

    In the work presented, a computational tool used for the dynamic simulation of railway vehicle systems was developed using multibody systems formulations. The model based on the multibody techniques developed by Shabana. With respect to other exciting methodologies the proposed one make use of a combined frame of references that permit the use of independent coordinates, with out the possibility to have singularity configurations depending on the rotation sequence. The combined frame of references used as a base for the formulation and modeling of wheel-rail contact problem with high precision. The program was designed for considering with a flexible form the different configuration of railway vehicles. The main structure of the program has the ability of making changes for enhancement of the wheel-rail contact model or the implementation of dynamic structure of the track, which considered to be future aspects for a PHD dissertation. The model used was applied to make a simulation for single bogie , also for a complete vehicle with two bogies. The obtained results of the dynamic response for a defined track composed of, tangent segment, transition curve which take the form of a clothoid curve, and finally circular curve with constant radius. The calculations were made for different velocities, lower than the critical in which the vehicle responded in stable form, and higher than the critical at which the instability of the vehicle was studied.Elsayed Abdel Hameed Amer Shaltout, R.     Identification of internal properties of fibres and micro-swimmers

    In this paper, we address the identifiability of constitutive parameters of passive or active micro-swimmers. We first present a general framework for describing fibres or micro-swimmers using a bead-model description. Using a kinematic constraint formulation to describe fibres, flagellum or cilia, we find explicit linear relationship between elastic constitutive parameters and generalized velocities from computing contact forces. This linear formulation then permits one to address explicitly identifiability conditions and solve for parameter identification. We show that both active forcing and passive parameters are both identifiable independently but not simultaneously. We also provide unbiased estimators for generalized elastic parameters in the presence of Langevin-like forcing with Gaussian noise using a Bayesian approach. These theoretical results are illustrated in various configurations showing the efficiency of the proposed approach for direct parameter identification. The convergence of the proposed estimators is successfully tested numerically

    A Minimal Mechanosensing Model Predicts Keratocyte Evolution on Flexible Substrates

    A mathematical model is proposed for shape evolution and locomotion of fish epidermal keratocytes on elastic substrates. The model is based on mechanosensing concepts: cells apply contractile forces onto the elastic substrate, while cell shape evolution depends locally on the substrate stress generated by themselves or external mechanical stimuli acting on the substrate. We use the level set method to study the behaviour of the model numerically, and predict a number of distinct phenomena observed in experiments, such as (i) symmetry breaking from the stationary centrosymmetric to the well-known steadily propagating crescent shape, (ii) asymmetric bipedal oscillations and travelling waves in the lamellipodium leading edge, (iii) response to remote mechanical stress externally applied to the substrate (tensotaxis) and (iv) changing direction of motion towards an interface with a rigid substrate (durotaxis)
