A survey of software development practices in the New Zealand software industry
We report on the software development techniques used in the New Zealand software industry, paying particular attention to requirements gathering. We surveyed a selection of software companies with a general questionnaire and then conducted in-depth interviews with four companies. Our results show a wide variety in the kinds of companies undertaking software development, employing a wide range of software development techniques. Although our data are not sufficiently detailed to draw statistically significant conclusions, it appears that larger software development groups typically have more well-defined software development processes, spend proportionally more time on requirements gathering, and follow more rigorous testing regimes
Recommendations and illustrations for the evaluation of photonic random number generators
The never-ending quest to improve the security of digital information
combined with recent improvements in hardware technology has caused the field
of random number generation to undergo a fundamental shift from relying solely
on pseudo-random algorithms to employing optical entropy sources. Despite these
significant advances on the hardware side, commonly used statistical measures
and evaluation practices remain ill-suited to understand or quantify the
optical entropy that underlies physical random number generation. We review the
state of the art in the evaluation of optical random number generation and
recommend a new paradigm: quantifying entropy generation and understanding the
physical limits of the optical sources of randomness. In order to do this, we
advocate for the separation of the physical entropy source from deterministic
post-processing in the evaluation of random number generators and for the
explicit consideration of the impact of the measurement and digitization
process on the rate of entropy production. We present the Cohen-Procaccia
estimate of the entropy rate as one way to do this. In order
to provide an illustration of our recommendations, we apply the Cohen-Procaccia
estimate as well as the entropy estimates from the new NIST draft standards for
physical random number generators to evaluate and compare three common optical
entropy sources: single photon time-of-arrival detection, chaotic lasers, and
amplified spontaneous emission
Multi-Behavioral Endpoint Testing Of An 87-Chemical Compound Library In Freshwater Planarians
There is an increased recognition in the field of toxicology of the value of medium-to-high-throughput screening methods using in vitro and alternative animal models. We have previously introduced the asexual freshwater planarian Dugesia japonica as a new alternative animal model and proposed that it is particularly well-suited for the study of developmental neurotoxicology. In this paper, we discuss how we have expanded and automated our screening methodology to allow for fast screening of multiple behavioral endpoints, developmental toxicity, and mortality. Using an 87-compound library provided by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), consisting of known and suspected neurotoxicants, including drugs, flame retardants, industrial chemicals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides and presumptive negative controls, we further evaluate the benefits and limitations of the system for medium-throughput screening, focusing on the technical aspects of the system. We show that, in the context of this library, planarians are the most sensitive to pesticides with 16/16 compounds causing toxicity and the least sensitive to PAHs, with only 5/17 causing toxicity. Furthermore, while none of the presumptive negative controls were bioactive in adult planarians, 2/5, acetaminophen and acetylsalicylic acid, were bioactive in regenerating worms. Notably, these compounds were previously reported as developmentally toxic in mammalian studies. Through parallel screening of adults and developing animals, planarians are thus a useful model to detect such developmental-specific effects, which was observed for 13 chemicals in this library. We use the data and experience gained from this screen to propose guidelines for best practices when using planarians for toxicology screens

A Prototype Toolkit For Evaluating Indoor Environmental Quality In Commercial Buildings
Measurement of building environmental parameters is often complex, expensive, and not easily proceduralized in a manner that covers all commercial buildings. Evaluating building indoor environmental quality performance is therefore not standard practice. This project developed a prototype toolkit that addressed existing barriers to widespread indoor environmental quality performance evaluation. A toolkit with both hardware and software elements was designed for practitioners around the indoor environmental quality requirements of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers / Chartered Institution of Building Services / United States Green Building Council Performance Measurement Protocols. This unique toolkit was built on a wireless mesh network with a web-based data collection, analysis, and reporting application. The toolkit provided a fast, robust deployment of sensors, real-time data analysis, Performance Measurement Protocol-based analysis methods and a scorecard and report generation tools. A web-enabled Geographic Information System-based metadata collection system also reduced field-study deployment time. The toolkit was evaluated through three case studies, which were discussed in this report

A summary of the activities which led to defining deterioration rates of the CF6 family of engines, a description of what was learned, and an identification of means of conserving fuel based upon the program findings are presented. The program to define the deterioration levels and modes for the CF6 family of engines involved four distinct phases: analysis of inbound engine test results, analysis of airline cruise data, analysis of airline test cell data resulting from testing of refurbished engines, and inspection of engine hardware
The effects of human resource practices on firm growth
Although the connection between firm growth and labour is well documented in economics literature, only recently the link between human resources (HR) and firm growth has attracted the interest of researchers. This study aims to assess the extent, if any, to which, specific HR practices may contribute to firm growth. We review a rich literature on the links between firm performance and the following HR practices: (1) job security (2) selective hiring, (3) self-managed teams (4) compensation policy, (5) extensive training, and (6) information sharing. We surveyed HR managers and recorded their perceptions about the links between HR practices and firm growth. Results demonstrated that compensation policy was the strongest predictor of sales growth. Results provide overall support for all HR practices except of job security. Eventually, selecting, training, and rewarding employees as well as giving them the power to decide for the benefit of their firm, contribute significantly to firm growth

Modelling of 4WD vehicle driveability during tip-in/tip-out events
This paper describes a modelling method to investigate the dynamic behaviour of 4WD vehicle under a severe
driving condition, where the driver applies a rapid tip-in on the accelerator pedal in 2nd gear to achieve maximum
engine torque. This is followed by a tip-out event by releasing the accelerator quickly.
The Tip-In/Tip-Out events are one of important elements to assess the vehicle driveability. During these test
events, the vehicle is expected to generate low frequency vibration between 2 Hz and 10 Hz and gives discomfort
feelings induced by resonance effects on sensitive human organs. The aim of this paper is to develop a 4WD
vehicle model in a modern object-oriented multi-body simulation tool and study its driveability
