    Real-Time Synthesis is Hard!

    We study the reactive synthesis problem (RS) for specifications given in Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL). RS is known to be undecidable in a very general setting, but on infinite words only; and only the very restrictive BRRS subcase is known to be decidable (see D'Souza et al. and Bouyer et al.). In this paper, we precise the decidability border of MITL synthesis. We show RS is undecidable on finite words too, and present a landscape of restrictions (both on the logic and on the possible controllers) that are still undecidable. On the positive side, we revisit BRRS and introduce an efficient on-the-fly algorithm to solve it

    Taming Large Bounds in Synthesis from Bounded-Liveness Specifications

    Automatic synthesis from temporal logic specifications is an attractive alternative to manual system design, due to its ability to generate correct-by-construction implementations from high-level specifications. Due to the high complexity of the synthesis problem, significant research efforts have been directed at developing practically efficient approaches for restricted specification language fragments. In this paper, we focus on the Safety LTL fragment of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) syntactically extended with bounded temporal operators. We propose a new synthesis approach with the primary motivation to solve efficiently the synthesis problem for specifications with bounded temporal operators, in particular those with large bounds. The experimental evaluation of our method shows that for this type of specifications, it outperforms state-of-art synthesis tools, demonstrating that it is a promising approach to efficiently treating quantitative timing constraints in safety specifications

    Mightyl: A compositional translation from mitl to timed automata

    Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL) was first proposed in the early 1990s as a specification formalism for real-time systems. Apart from its appealing intuitive syntax, there are also theoretical evidences that make MITL a prime real-time counterpart of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). Unfortunately, the tool support for MITL verification is still lacking to this day. In this paper, we propose a new construction from MITL to timed automata via very-weak one-clock alternating timed automata. Our construction subsumes the well-known construction from LTL to Büchi automata by Gastin and Oddoux and yet has the additional benefits of being compositional and integrating easily with existing tools. We implement the construction in our new tool MightyL and report on experiments using Uppaal and LTSmin as back-ends

    Timed-Automata-Based Verification of MITL over Signals

    It has been argued that the most suitable semantic model for real-time formalisms is the non-negative real line (signals), i.e. the continuous semantics, which naturally captures the continuous evolution of system states. Existing tools like UPPAAL are, however, based on omega-sequences with timestamps (timed words), i.e. the pointwise semantics. Furthermore, the support for logic formalisms is very limited in these tools. In this article, we amend these issues by a compositional translation from Metric Temporal Interval Logic (MITL) to signal automata. Combined with an emptiness-preserving encoding of signal automata into timed automata, we obtain a practical automata-based approach to MITL model-checking over signals. We implement the translation in our tool MightyL and report on case studies using LTSmin as the back-end

    Processor Microarchitecture for Implementation of Ephemeral State Processing within Network Routers

    The evolving concept of Ephemeral State Processing (ESP) is overviewed. ESP allows development of new scalable end-to-end network user services. An evolving macro-level language is being developed to support ESP at the network node level. Three approaches for implementing ESP services at network routers can be considered. One approach is to use the existing processing capability within commercially available network routers. Another approach is to add a small scale existing ASIC based general-purpose processor to an existing network router. This thesis research concentrates on a third approach of developing a special-purpose programmable Ephemeral State Processor (ESPR) Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) and implementing microarchitecture for deployment within each ESP-capable node to implement ESP service within that node. A unique architectural characteristic of the ESPR is its scalable and temporal Ephemeral State Store (ESS) associative memory, required by the ESP service for storage/retrieval of bounded (short) lifetime ephemeral (tag, value) pairs of application data. The ESPR will be implemented to Programmable Logic Device (PLD) technology within a network node. This offers advantages of reconfigurability, in-field upgrade capability and supports the evolving growth of ESP services. Correct functional and performance operation of the presented ESPR microarchitecture is validated via Hardware Description Language (HDL) post-implementation (virtual prototype) simulation testing. Suggestions of future research related to improving the performance of the ESPR rnicroarchitecture and experimental deployment of ESP are discussed

    Efficient controller synthesis for a fragment of MTL<inf>0</inf>, &infin

    In this paper we offer an efficient controller synthesis algorithm for assume-guarantee specifications of the form &phi;1 &and; &phi;2 &and; &mellip; &and; &phi;n &rarr; &psi;1 &and; &psi;2 &and; &mellip; &and; &psi;m. Here, {&phi;i,&psi;j} are all safety-MTL0, &infin; properties, where the sub-formulas {&phi;i} are supposed to specify assumptions of the environment and the sub-formulas {&psi;j} are specifying requirements to be guaranteed by the controller. Our synthesis method exploits the engine of Uppaal-Tiga and the novel translation of safety- and co-safety-MTL0, &infin; properties into under-approximating, deterministic timed automata. Our approach avoids determinization of Bu&die;chi automata, which is the main obstacle for the practical applicability of controller synthesis for linear-time specifications. The experiments demonstrate that the chosen specification formalism is expressive enough to specify complex behaviors. The proposed approach is sound but not complete. However, it successfully produced solutions for all the experiments.
