    Investigation of optical wireless for employment within a vehicular environment

    The substantial increase in powerful electronic systems and functions has produced significant implications for the vehicular industry, where the amount of wiring infrastructure has increased the vehicle weight, weakened performance, and made adherence to reliability standards difficult. Eventually, connecting the electronics infrastructure was mostly complicated and costly in vehicular domain systems. Thus, little research has been conducted to explore appropriate wireless technologies that may be suitable with the emerging network standard within the context of vehicular networks. This thesis describes an in-depth investigation of deploying an optical wireless communication system within the vehicular environment, particularly in confined spaces. A wide variety of measurements has been performed using tubes of various materials and geometries, in a laboratory setup. The principle objective is to provide a primary knowledge of optical wireless channel characterization within a laboratory vehicular setting. The work presented is a study on directed line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) links, and focuses on frequency response, power efficiencies, and path losses in different experimental settings. Further, a variety of experimental settings was used in respect to different receiver/transmitter orientations and various bent tubes angles in order to investigate the channel conditions. The noise analysis, xviii SNR, path loss and the eye pattern for the digital system prototype designed were also analysed. The system requirement for the LOS link were based on the transmission of the sinusoidal signal at a distance of 1 m with 13 MHz signal and approximately 15.6 dB SNR. Successful demonstration of the OWC within smaller size and high reflection coefficient material are promising. In addition to good transmitter and high sensitivity receiver. The NLOS link also demonstrated a good indication, both in straight tube with angled transmitter/receiver orientation and bend tubes. Detail studies on NLOS link with pulse signal transmission, which replicates a digital system transmission with 54.48mW or 44.58 mW/cm2 output power,6 MHz signal transmission with the aim of 10-4 to 10-6 BER. Although, the operational functionality of digital system has successfully demonstrated, however achieving the desired BER is a bit difficult with the designed system. Further improvement on the highly sensitive receiver design, a proper modulation scheme is required in order to improve the quality of the transmitted signal in terms of SNR and BER. The study also suggested that the transmission within the metal tubes is better than in plastic tubes in addition to minimum bend angle, smaller tube diameter and high reflective coefficient. Transmission within 20 mm circular aluminium tube and 35 mm galvanised aluminium tube are the best so far. Finally, based on the initial viability results, it was seen that it is possible to implement an optical wireless communication infrastructure within the vehicular environment. Experimental validation of the system proposed shows that achieving high data rates is not a problem with the use of high brightness, high power LEDs as this system is xix going to be implemented within the vehicle chassis, thus the eye safety constraints should not be a limiting factor. Therefore, in this study, optical wireless transmission within the vehicular environment is proposed, solving the problems of vehicular networking systems

    Calificación del Sensor de Irradiancia Solar Espacial SIS

    El presente trabajo contempla la definición y ejecución de la calificación del instrumento inalámbrico SIS, desarrollado para sensar el espectro solar sobre la superficie de Marte. Con el fin de demostrar el cumplimiento de los requisitos impuestos por la misión, dicha calificación contempla los test eléctricos y funcionales, test de vibración, test de ciclado térmico, test de vacío térmico, test de choque y test de DHMR, siendo estos necesarios para calificar un instrumento enfocado para un entorno tan agresivo como es el Espacial y más concretamente para una misión a Marte, a cuyo principal problema de radiación se une otros requisitos ambientales como puede ser las bajas temperaturas a las cuales se verá expuesto el instrumento (de hasta -120 ºC), el impacto sufrido en el aterrizaje y la presencia de polvo en la atmósfera. Para comandar el instrumento se ha implementado una aplicación bajo Labwindows que determina el correcto funcionamiento del mismo. El desarrollo de dicha aplicación junto con su manual de usuario será el segundo hito del presente trabajo.This work deals with the definition and execution of the qualification of the wireless SIS instrument, developed to sense the solar spectrum on the surface of Mars. In order to demonstrate that the instrument withstands the requirements of the mission, qualification includes electrical and functional, vibration, thermal cycling, thermal vacuum, shock and DHMR tests. All of them are necessary to qualify an instrument for the aggressive space environment, and more concretely for the Martian conditions, whose main problems regarding radiations are joined by extreme environmental conditions to which instrument is exposed, as the low temperatures (down to -120 ºC), the shock suffered at landing and the presence of dust in the atmosphere. To command the instrument, a Labwindows application that determines its correct operation has been implemented.     Looking towards the future: the changing nature of intrusive surveillance and technical attacks against high-profile targets

    In this thesis a novel Bayesian model is developed that is capable of predicting the probability of a range of eavesdropping techniques deployed, given an attacker's capability, opportunity and intent. Whilst limited attention by academia has focused on the cold war activities of Soviet bloc and Western allies' bugging of embassies, even less attention has been paid to the changing nature of the technology used for these eavesdropping events. This thesis makes four contributions: through the analysis of technical eavesdropping events over the last century, technological innovation is shown to have enriched the eavesdropping opportunities for a range of capabilities. The entry barrier for effective eavesdropping is lowered, while for the well resourced eavesdropper, the requirement for close access has been replaced by remote access opportunities. A new way to consider eavesdropping methods is presented through the expert elicitation of capability and opportunity requirements for a range of present-day eavesdropping techniques. Eavesdropping technology is shown to have life-cycle stages with the technology exploited by different capabilities at different times. Three case studies illustrate that yesterday’s secretive government method becomes today’s commodity. The significance of the egress transmission path is considered too. Finally, by using the expert elicitation information derived for capability, opportunity and life-cycle position, for a range of eavesdropping techniques, it is shown that it is possible to predict the probability of particular eavesdropping techniques being deployed. This novel Bayesian inferencing model enables scenarios with incomplete, uncertain or missing detail to be considered. The model is validated against the previously collated historic eavesdropping events. The development of this concept may be scaled with additional eavesdropping techniques to form the basis of a tool for security professionals or risk managers wishing to define eavesdropping threat advice or create eavesdropping policies based on the rigour of this technological study.Open Acces

    Embodied Cognitive Science of Music. Modeling Experience and Behavior in Musical Contexts

    Recently, the role of corporeal interaction has gained wide recognition within cognitive musicology. This thesis reviews evidence from different directions in music research supporting the importance of body-based processes for the understanding of music-related experience and behaviour. Stressing the synthetic focus of cognitive science, cognitive science of music is discussed as a modeling approach that takes these processes into account and may theoretically be embedded within the theory of dynamic systems. In particular, arguments are presented for the use of robotic devices as tools for the investigation of processes underlying human music-related capabilities (musical robotics)
