    Modeling of asphalt durability and self-healing with discrete particles method

    Asphalt is an important road paving material. Besides an acceptable price, durability, surface conditions (like roughening and evenness), age-, weather- and traffic-induced failures and degradation are relevant aspects. In the professional road-engineering branch empirical models are used to describe the mechanical behaviour of the material and to address large-scale problems for road distress phenomena like rutting, ravelling, cracking and roughness. The mesoscopic granular nature of asphalt and the mechanics of the bitumen layer between the particles are only partly involved in this kind of approach. The discrete particle method is a modern tool that allows for arbitrary (self- )organization of the asphalt meso-structure and for rearrangements due to compaction and cyclic loading. This is of utmost importance for asphalt during the construction phase and the usage period, in forecasting the relevant distress phenomena and understand their origin on the grain-, contact-, or molecular scales. Contact models that involve viscoelasticity, plasticity, friction and roughness are state-of-the art in fields like particle technology and can now be modified for asphalt and validated experimentally on small samples. The ultimate goal is then to derive micro- and meso-based constitutive models that can be applied to model behaviour of asphalt pavements on the larger macroscale. Using the new contact models, damage and crack formation in asphalt and their propagation can be modelled, as well as compaction. Furthermore, the possibility to trigger self-healing in the material can be investigated from a micro-mechanical point of view

    Fuzzy simulation of forest road surface parameters

    The problem of construction of forest roads with the use of local low-strength substandard materials and industrial waste is considered. To solve the problem, the primary task is to develop a method for estimating the parameters of road surfaces taking into account the conditions of uncertainties in the data. This technique allows us to reasonably clarify some of the regulatory parameters and improve the technology of construction of forest roads, which was the goal of the work. To formalize the task, experimental studies were performed and on the basis of these results, the statement of the task of fuzzy derivation of the function for estimating the bearing capacity of the coating was performed.     Predicting fuel energy consumption during earthworks

    This research contributes to the assessment of on-site fuel consumption and the resulting carbon dioxide emissions due to earthworks-related processes in residential building projects, prior to the start of the construction phase. Several studies have been carried out on this subject, and have demonstrated the considerable environmental impact of earthworks activities in terms of fuel consumption. However, no methods have been proposed to estimate on-site fuel consumption during the planning stage. This paper presents a quantitative method to predict fuel consumption before the construction phase. The calculations were based on information contained in construction project documents and the definition of equipment load factors. Load factors were characterized for the typical equipment that is used in earthworks in residential building projects (excavators, loaders and compactors), taking into considering the type of soil, the type of surface and the duration of use. We also analyzed transport fuel consumption, because of its high impact in terms of pollution. The proposed method was then applied to a case study that illustrated its practical use and benefits. The predictive method can be used as an assessment tool for residential construction projects, to measure the environmental impact in terms of on-site fuel consumption.     Developing a real-time process control system for asphalt paving and compaction

    Asphalt construction is a complex process filled with variables that influence asphalt quality significantly. Process parameters such as the temperature of the asphalt mat and compaction consistency need to be measured and observed using high accuracy sensors. Analysis of the sensor-derived temperature contour plots (TCPs) and compaction contour plots (CCPs) (available for the last decade) has suggested asphalt quality also linked to operator's behaviour, where his decisions mainly based on tacit knowledge. To eliminate 'blindness' of asphalt team about construction process itself, we consider to provide operators with essential data in appropriate way in real-time. This paper presents the solution of developing a real-time process control system for asphalt paving and compaction. We explore current solutions, which are utilized in hot-mix asphalt pavement, and estimate the main set of drawbacks and benefits of them. Our analysis further revealed the strong need in real-time system. Providing data and visuals to the asphalt team in real-time is a complex task, demanding great effort in terms of system and software development. The results of such development need to be considered in future studies of monitoring systems for asphalt pavements

    Process analytical technology tools for process control of roller compaction in solid pharmaceuticals manufacturing

    This article presents an overview of using process analytical technology in monitoring the roller compaction process. In the past two decades, near-infrared spectroscopy, near-infrared spectroscopy coupled with chemical imaging, microwave resonance technology, thermal effusivity and various particle imaging techniques have been used for developing at-, off-, on- and in-line models for predicting critical quality attributes of ribbons and subsequent granules and tablets. The common goal of all these methods is improved process understanding and process control, and thus improved production of high-quality products. This article reviews the work of several researchers in this field, comparing and critically evaluating their achievements

    Emerging technologies for the non-invasive characterization of physical-mechanical properties of tablets

    The density, porosity, breaking force, viscoelastic properties, and the presence or absence of any structural defects or irregularities are important physical-mechanical quality attributes of popular solid dosage forms like tablets. The irregularities associated with these attributes may influence the drug product functionality. Thus, an accurate and efficient characterization of these properties is critical for successful development and manufacturing of a robust tablets. These properties are mainly analyzed and monitored with traditional pharmacopeial and non-pharmacopeial methods. Such methods are associated with several challenges such as lack of spatial resolution, efficiency, or sample-sparing attributes. Recent advances in technology, design, instrumentation, and software have led to the emergence of newer techniques for non-invasive characterization of physical-mechanical properties of tablets. These techniques include near infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray microtomography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging, terahertz pulsed imaging, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and various acoustic- and thermal-based techniques. Such state-of-the-art techniques are currently applied at various stages of development and manufacturing of tablets at industrial scale. Each technique has specific advantages or challenges with respect to operational efficiency and cost, compared to traditional analytical methods. Currently, most of these techniques are used as secondary analytical tools to support the traditional methods in characterizing or monitoring tablet quality attributes. Therefore, further development in the instrumentation and software, and studies on the applications are necessary for their adoption in routine analysis and monitoring of tablet physical-mechanical properties
