Fractional - order system modeling and its applications

    Get PDF
In order to control or operate any system in a closed-loop, it is important to know its behavior in the form of mathematical models. In the last two decades, a fractional-order model has received more attention in system identification instead of classical integer-order model transfer function. Literature shows recently that some techniques on fractional calculus and fractional-order models have been presenting valuable contributions to real-world processes and achieved better results. Such new developments have impelled research into extensions of the classical identification techniques to advanced fields of science and engineering. This article surveys the recent methods in the field and other related challenges to implement the fractional-order derivatives and miss-matching with conventional science. The comprehensive discussion on available literature would help the readers to grasp the concept of fractional-order modeling and can facilitate future investigations. One can anticipate manifesting recent advances in fractional-order modeling in this paper and unlocking more opportunities for research

Effect of Random Parameter Switching on Commensurate Fractional Order Chaotic Systems

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record. The paper explores the effect of random parameter switching in a fractional order (FO) unified chaotic system which captures the dynamics of three popular sub-classes of chaotic systems i.e. Lorenz, Lu and Chen's family of attractors. The disappearance of chaos in such systems which rapidly switch from one family to the other has been investigated here for the commensurate FO scenario. Our simulation study show that a noise-like random variation in the key parameter of the unified chaotic system along with a gradual decrease in the commensurate FO is capable of suppressing the chaotic fluctuations much earlier than that with the fixed parameter one. The chaotic time series produced by such random parameter switching in nonlinear dynamical systems have been characterized using the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) and Shannon entropy. The effect of choosing different simulation techniques for random parameter FO switched chaotic systems have also been explored through two frequency domain and three time domain methods. Such a noise-like random switching mechanism could be useful for stabilization and control of chaotic oscillation in many real-world applications

Study of numeric Saturation Effects in Linear Digital Compensators

Saturation arithmetic is often used in finite precision digital compensators to circumvent instability due to radix overflow. The saturation limits in the digital structure lead to nonlinear behavior during large state transients. It is shown that if all recursive loops in a compensator are interrupted by at least one saturation limit, then there exists a bounded external scaling rule which assures against overflow at all nodes in the structure. Design methods are proposed based on the generalized second method of Lyapunov, which take the internal saturation limits into account to implement a robust dual-mode suboptimal control for bounded input plants. The saturating digital compensator provides linear regulation for small disturbances, and near-time-optimal control for large disturbances or changes in the operating point. Computer aided design tools are developed to facilitate the analysis and design of this class of digital compensators

    Digital Filters

The new technology advances provide that a great number of system signals can be easily measured with a low cost. The main problem is that usually only a fraction of the signal is useful for different purposes, for example maintenance, DVD-recorders, computers, electric/electronic circuits, econometric, optimization, etc. Digital filters are the most versatile, practical and effective methods for extracting the information necessary from the signal. They can be dynamic, so they can be automatically or manually adjusted to the external and internal conditions. Presented in this book are the most advanced digital filters including different case studies and the most relevant literature

PI/PID Controller Relay Experiment Auto-Tuning with Extended Kalman Filter and Second-Order Generalized Integrator as Parameter Estimators

This paper presents a method for the estimation of key parameters of limit cycle oscillations (amplitude and frequency) during a relay experiment used for automatic tuning of proportional-integral (PI) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) feedback controllers. The limit cycle parameter estimator is based on the first-order extended Kalman filter (EKF) for resonance frequency estimation, to which a second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) is cascaded for the purpose of limit cycle amplitude estimation. Based on thus-obtained parameters of the limit cycle oscillations, the ultimate gain and the ultimate period of the limit cycle oscillations are estimated. These are subsequently used for the tuning of PI and PID controller according to Takahashi modifications of Ziegler-Nichols tuning rules. The proposed PI and PID controller auto-tuning method is verified by means of simulations and experimentally on the heat and air-flow experimental setup for the case of air temperature feedback control. The results have shown that the proposed auto-tuning system based on relay control experiment for the heat and air-flow process PI/PID temperature control can capture the ultimate gain and period parameters fairly quickly in simulations and in experiments. Subsequent controller tuning according to Takahashi modifications of Ziegler-Nichols rules using thus-obtained ultimate point parameters can provide favourable closed-loop load disturbance rejection, particularly in the case of PID controller
