    Integration and deployment of a distributed and pluggable industrial architecture for the PERFoRM project

    To meet flexibility and reconfigurability requirements, modern production systems need hardware and software solutions which ease the connection and mediation of different and heterogonous industrial cyber-physical components. Following the vision of Industry 4.0, the H2020 PERFoRM project targets, particularly, the seamless reconfiguration of robots and machinery.     Optimizing Sensor Network Reprogramming via In-situ Reconfigurable Components

    International audienceWireless reprogramming of sensor nodes is a critical requirement in long-lived Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for several concerns, such as fixing bugs, upgrading the operating system and applications, and adapting applications behavior according to the physical environment. In such resource-poor platforms, the ability to efficiently delimit and reconfigure the necessary portion of sensor software--instead of updating the full binary image--is of vital importance. However, most of existing approaches in this field have not been widely adopted to date due to the extensive use of WSN resources or lack of generality. In this article, we therefore consider WSN programming models and run-time reconfiguration models as two interrelated factors and we present an integrated approach for addressing efficient reprogramming in WSNs. The middleware solution we propose, RemoWare, is characterized by mitigating the cost of post-deployment software updates on sensor nodes via the notion of in-situ reconfigurability and providing a component-based programming abstraction to facilitate the development of dynamic WSN applications. Our evaluation results show that RemoWare imposes a very low energy overhead in code distribution and component reconfiguration, and consumes approximately 6% of the total code memory on a TelosB sensor platform

    A service-oriented approach to embedded component-based manufacturing automation

    This thesis is focused on the application of Component-Based (CB) technology to shop oor devices using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web Services (WS) for the purpose of realising future generation agile manufacturing systems. The environment of manufacturing enterprises is now characterised by frequently changing market demands, time-to-market pressure, continuously emerging new technologies and global competition. Under these circumstances, manufacturing systems need to be agile and automation systems need to support this agility. More speci cally, an open, exible automation environment with plug and play connectivity is needed. Technically, this requires the easy connectivity of hardware devices and software components from di erent vendors. Functionally, there is a need of interoperability and integration of control functions on di erent hierarchical levels ranging from eld level to various higher level applications such as process control and operations management services.     A comparative analysis of adaptive middleware architectures based on computational reflection and aspect oriented programming to support mobile computing applications

    Mobile computing applications are required to operate in environments in which the availability for resources and services may change significantly during system operation. As a result, mobile computing applications need to be capable of adapting to these changes to offer the best possible level of service to their users. However, traditional middleware is limited in its capability of adapting to environment changes and different users requirements. Computational Reflection and Aspect Oriented Programming paradigms have been used in the design and implementation of adaptive middleware architectures. In this paper, we propose two adaptive middleware architectures, one based on reflection and other based on aspects, which can be used to develop adaptive mobile applications. The reflection based architecture is compared to an aspect oriented based architecture from a quantitative perspective.     Flexible multi-layer virtual machine design for virtual laboratory in distributed systems and grids.

    We propose a flexible Multi-layer Virtual Machine (MVM) design intended to improve efficiencies in distributed and grid computing and to overcome the known current problems that exist within traditional virtual machine architectures and those used in distributed and grid systems. This thesis presents a novel approach to building a virtual laboratory to support e-science by adapting MVMs within the distributed systems and grids, thereby providing enhanced flexibility and reconfigurability by raising the level of abstraction. The MVM consists of three layers. They are OS-level VM, queue VMs, and components VMs. The group of MVMs provides the virtualized resources, virtualized networks, and reconfigurable components layer for virtual laboratories. We demonstrate how our reconfigurable virtual machine can allow software designers and developers to reuse parallel communication patterns. In our framework, the virtual machines can be created on-demand and their applications can be distributed at the source-code level, compiled and instantiated in runtime. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)     BRAHMS: Novel middleware for integrated systems computation

    Biological computational modellers are becoming increasingly interested in building large, eclectic models, including components on many different computational substrates, both biological and non-biological. At the same time, the rise of the philosophy of embodied modelling is generating a need to deploy biological models as controllers for robots in real-world environments. Finally, robotics engineers are beginning to find value in seconding biomimetic control strategies for use on practical robots. Together with the ubiquitous desire to make good on past software development effort, these trends are throwing up new challenges of intellectual and technological integration (for example across scales, across disciplines, and even across time) - challenges that are unmet by existing software frameworks. Here, we outline these challenges in detail, and go on to describe a newly developed software framework, BRAHMS. that meets them. BRAHMS is a tool for integrating computational process modules into a viable, computable system: its generality and flexibility facilitate integration across barriers, such as those described above, in a coherent and effective way. We go on to describe several cases where BRAHMS has been successfully deployed in practical situations. We also show excellent performance in comparison with a monolithic development approach. Additional benefits of developing in the framework include source code self-documentation, automatic coarse-grained parallelisation, cross-language integration, data logging, performance monitoring, and will include dynamic load-balancing and 'pause and continue' execution. BRAHMS is built on the nascent, and similarly general purpose, model markup language, SystemML. This will, in future, also facilitate repeatability and accountability (same answers ten years from now), transparent automatic software distribution, and interfacing with other SystemML tools.
