On the Design of Artificial-Noise-Aided Secure Multi-Antenna Transmission in Slow Fading Channels
In this paper, we investigate the design of artificial-noise-aided secure
multi-antenna transmission in slow fading channels. The primary design concerns
include the transmit power allocation and the rate parameters of the wiretap
code. We consider two scenarios with different complexity levels: i) the design
parameters are chosen to be fixed for all transmissions, ii) they are
adaptively adjusted based on the instantaneous channel feedback from the
intended receiver. In both scenarios, we provide explicit design solutions for
achieving the maximal throughput subject to a secrecy constraint, given by a
maximum allowable secrecy outage probability. We then derive accurate
approximations for the maximal throughput in both scenarios in the high
signal-to-noise ratio region, and give new insights into the additional power
cost for achieving a higher security level, whilst maintaining a specified
target throughput. In the end, the throughput gain of adaptive transmission
over non-adaptive transmission is also quantified and analyzed.Comment: to appear in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technolog
Energy and bursty packet loss tradeoff over fading channels: a system-level model
Energy efficiency and quality of service (QoS) guarantees are the key design goals for the 5G wireless communication systems. In this context, we discuss a multiuser scheduling scheme over fading channels for loss tolerant applications. The loss tolerance of the application is characterized in terms of different parameters that contribute to quality of experience (QoE) for the application. The mobile users are scheduled opportunistically such that a minimum QoS is guaranteed. We propose an opportunistic scheduling scheme and address the cross-layer design framework when channel state information (CSI) is not perfectly available at the transmitter and the receiver. We characterize the system energy as a function of different QoS and channel state estimation error parameters. The optimization problem is formulated using Markov chain framework and solved using stochastic optimization techniques. The results demonstrate that the parameters characterizing the packet loss are tightly coupled and relaxation of one parameter does not benefit the system much if the other constraints are tight. We evaluate the energy-performance tradeoff numerically and show the effect of channel uncertainty on the packet scheduler design
Distortion Exponent in MIMO Channels with Feedback
The transmission of a Gaussian source over a block-fading multiple antenna
channel in the presence of a feedback link is considered. The feedback link is
assumed to be an error and delay free link of capacity 1 bit per channel use.
Under the short-term power constraint, the optimal exponential behavior of the
end-to-end average distortion is characterized for all source-channel bandwidth
ratios. It is shown that the optimal transmission strategy is successive
refinement source coding followed by progressive transmission over the channel,
in which the channel block is allocated dynamically among the layers based on
the channel state using the feedback link as an instantaneous automatic repeat
request (ARQ) signal.Comment: Presented at the IEEE Information Theory Workshop (ITW), Taormina,

Multihop Diversity in Wideband OFDM Systems: The Impact of Spatial Reuse and Frequency Selectivity
The goal of this paper is to establish which practical routing schemes for
wireless networks are most suitable for wideband systems in the power-limited
regime, which is, for example, a practically relevant mode of operation for the
analysis of ultrawideband (UWB) mesh networks. For this purpose, we study the
tradeoff between energy efficiency and spectral efficiency (known as the
power-bandwidth tradeoff) in a wideband linear multihop network in which
transmissions employ orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)
modulation and are affected by quasi-static, frequency-selective fading.
Considering open-loop (fixed-rate) and closed-loop (rate-adaptive) multihop
relaying techniques, we characterize the impact of routing with spatial reuse
on the statistical properties of the end-to-end conditional mutual information
(conditioned on the specific values of the channel fading parameters and
therefore treated as a random variable) and on the energy and spectral
efficiency measures of the wideband regime. Our analysis particularly deals
with the convergence of these end-to-end performance measures in the case of
large number of hops, i.e., the phenomenon first observed in \cite{Oyman06b}
and named as ``multihop diversity''. Our results demonstrate the realizability
of the multihop diversity advantages in the case of routing with spatial reuse
for wideband OFDM systems under wireless channel effects such as path-loss and
quasi-static frequency-selective multipath fading.Comment: 6 pages, to be published in Proc. 2008 IEEE International Symposium
