Cultural Values and Cross-cultural Video Consumption on YouTube
Video-sharing social media like YouTube provide access to diverse cultural
products from all over the world, making it possible to test theories that the
Web facilitates global cultural convergence. Drawing on a daily listing of
YouTube's most popular videos across 58 countries, we investigate the
consumption of popular videos in countries that differ in cultural values,
language, gross domestic product, and Internet penetration rate. Although
online social media facilitate global access to cultural products, we find this
technological capability does not result in universal cultural convergence.
Instead, consumption of popular videos in culturally different countries
appears to be constrained by cultural values. Cross-cultural convergence is
more advanced in cosmopolitan countries with cultural values that favor
individualism and power inequality
The Citation Field of Evolutionary Economics
Evolutionary economics has developed into an academic field of its own,
institutionalized around, amongst others, the Journal of Evolutionary Economics
(JEE). This paper analyzes the way and extent to which evolutionary economics
has become an interdisciplinary journal, as its aim was: a journal that is
indispensable in the exchange of expert knowledge on topics and using
approaches that relate naturally with it. Analyzing citation data for the
relevant academic field for the Journal of Evolutionary Economics, we use
insights from scientometrics and social network analysis to find that, indeed,
the JEE is a central player in this interdisciplinary field aiming mostly at
understanding technological and regional dynamics. It does not, however, link
firmly with the natural sciences (including biology) nor to management
sciences, entrepreneurship, and organization studies. Another journal that
could be perceived to have evolutionary acumen, the Journal of Economic Issues,
does relate to heterodox economics journals and is relatively more involved in
discussing issues of firm and industry organization. The JEE seems most keen to
develop theoretical insights
Complex network analysis and nonlinear dynamics
This chapter aims at reviewing complex network and nonlinear dynamical
models and methods that were either developed for or applied to socioeconomic
issues, and pertinent to the theme of New Economic Geography. After an introduction
to the foundations of the field of complex networks, the present summary
introduces some applications of complex networks to economics, finance, epidemic
spreading of innovations, and regional trade and developments. The chapter also
reviews results involving applications of complex networks to other relevant
socioeconomic issue
