    On Efficient Signal Processing Algorithms for Signal Detection and PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems

    The driving force of the study is susceptibility of LS algorithm to noise. As LS algorithm is simple to implement, hence it’s performance improvement can contribute a lot to the wireless technology that are especially deals with high computation. Cascading of AdaBoost algorithm with LS greatly influences the OFDM system performance. Performance of Adaptive Boosting based symbol recovery was investigated on the performance of LS, MMSE, BLUE were also compared with the performance of AdaBoost algorithm and MMSE has been found the higher computational complexity. Furthermore, MMSE also requires apriori channel statistics and computational complexity O(5N3) of the MMSE increases exponentially as the number of carrier increases. For the Adaboost case the computational complexity calculation is little different.Therefore, in the training stage of the AdaBoost algorithm, the computational complexity is only O(nT M) Furthermore, as it is a classification algorithm so in the receiver side we will require a separate de-mapper (or decoder) to get the desired data bits, i.e., a. SAS aided DCT based PAPR reduction 1326 and b. SAS aided DCT based PAPR reduction. A successive addition subtraction preprocessed DCT based PAPR reduction technique was proposed. Here, the performance of proposed method was compared with other preexisting techniques like SLM and PTS and the performance of the proposed method was seen to outperform specially in low PAPR region. In the proposed PAPR reduction method, the receiver is aware of the transmitted signal processing, this enables a reverse operation at the receiver to extract the transmit data. Hence the requirement of sending extra information through extra subcarrier is eliminated. The proposed method is also seen to be spectrally efficient. In the case of PTS and SLM it is inevitable to send the side information to retrieve the transmit signal. Hence, these two methods are spectrally inefficient. Successive addition subtraction based PAPR reduction method was also applied to MIMO systems. The performance of the SAS based PAPR reduction method also showed better performance as compared to other technique. An extensive simulation of MIMO OFDM PAPR reduction was carried out by varying the number of subcarriers and number of transmitter antennas. A detailed computational complexity analysis was also carried out. BATE aided SDMA multi user detection. A detailed study of SDMA system was carried out with it’s mathematical analysis.Many linear and non linear detectors like ML, MMSE, PIC, SIC have been proposed in literature for multiuser detection of SDMA system. However, except MMSE every receivers other are computational extensive. So as to enhance the performance of the MMSE MUD a meta heuristic Bat algorithm was incorporated in cascade with MMSE

    Radio resource scheduling and smart antennas in cellular CDMA communication systems

    This thesis discusses two important subjects in multi-user wireless communication systems, radio resource scheduler (RRS) and smart antenna. RRS optimizes the available resources among users to increase the capacity and enhance the system performance. The RRS optimization procedure is based on the network conditions (link gain, interference, …) and the required quality of service (QoS) of each user. The CDMA system capacity and performance can be greatly enhanced by reducing the interferences. One of the techniques to reduce the interferences is by exploiting the spatial structure of the interferences. This could be done by using smart antennas which are the second subject of this thesis. The joining procedures of the smart antennas and RRS are discussed as well. Multi-Objective optimization approach is proposed to solve the radio resource scheduler problems. New algorithms are derived namely the Multi-Objective Distributed Power Control (MODPC) algorithm, Multi-Objective Distributed Power and Rate Control (MODPRC) algorithm, and Maximum Throughput and Minimum Power Control (MTMPC) algorithm. Other modified versions of these algorithms have been obtained such as Multi-Objective Totally Distributed Power and Rate Control (MOTDPRC) algorithm, which can be used when only one-bit quantized Carrier to Interference Ratio (CIR) is available. Kalman filter is proposed as a second technique to solve the RRS problem. The motivation to use Kalman filter is the known fact that Kalman filter is the optimum linear tracking device on the basis of second order statistics. The RRS is formulated in state space form. Two different formulations are introduced. New simple and efficient estimation of the CIR is presented. The method is used to construct a novel power control algorithm called Estimated Step Power Control (ESPC) algorithm. The smart antenna concepts and algorithms are discussed. New adaptation algorithm is proposed. It is called General Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (GMVDR) algorithm. The joining of MIMO smart antennas and radio resource scheduler is investigated. Kalman filter is suggested as a simple algorithm to join smart antenna and multi-rate power control in a new way. The performance of the RRS of CDMA cellular communication systems in the presence of smart antenna is studied.reviewe

    Fairness-Oriented and QoS-Aware Radio Resource Management in OFDMA Packet Radio Networks: Practical Algorithms and System Performance

    During the last two decades, wireless technologies have demonstrated their importance in people’s personal communications but also as one of the fundamental drivers of economic growth, first in the form of cellular networks (2G, 3G and beyond) and more recently in terms of wireless computer networks (e.g. Wi-Fi,) and wireless Internet connectivity. Currently, the development of new packet radio systems is evolving, most notably in terms of 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced, in order to utilize the available radio spectrum as efficiently as possible. Therefore, advanced radio resource management (RRM) techniques have an important role in current and emerging future mobile networks. In all wireless systems, the data throughput and the average data delay performance, especially in case of best effort services, are greatly degraded when the traffic-load in the system is high. This is because the radio resources (time, frequency and space) are shared by multiple users. Another big problem is that the transmission performance can vary heavily between different users, since the channel state greatly depends on the communication environment and changes therein. To solve these challenges, new major technology innovations are needed. This thesis considers new practical fairness-oriented and quality-of-service (QoS) -aware RRM algorithms in OFDMA-based packet radio networks. Moreover, using UTRAN LTE radio network as application example, we focus on analyzing and enhancing the system-level performance by utilizing state-of-the-art waveform and radio link developments combined with advanced radio resource management methods. The presented solutions as part of RRM framework consist of efficient packet scheduling, link adaptation, power control, admission control and retransmission mechanisms. More specifically, several novel packet scheduling algorithms are proposed and analyzed to address these challenges. This dissertation deals specifically with the problems of QoS provisioning and fair radio resource distribution among users with limited channel feedback, admission and power control in best effort and video streaming type traffic scenarios, and the resulting system-level performance. The work and developments are practically-oriented taking aspects like finite channel state information (CSI), reporting delays and retransmissions into account. Consequently, the multi-user diversity gain with opportunistic frequency domain packet scheduling (FDPS) is further explored in spatial domain by taking the multiantenna techniques and spatial division multiplexing functionalities into account. Validation and analysis of the proposed solutions is performed through extensive system level simulations modeling the behavior and operation of a complete multiuser cell in the overall network. Based on the obtained performance results, it is confirmed that greatly improved fairness can be fairly easily built in to the scheduling algorithm and other RRM mechanisms without considerably degrading e.g. the average cell throughput. Moreover, effective QoS-provisioning framework in video streaming type traffic scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented solutions as increased system capacity measured in terms of the number of users or parallel streaming services supported simultaneously by the network

    Dual operative radar for vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication

    The research presented in this Thesis deals with the concepts of joint radar and communication system for automotive application. The novel systems developed include a joint radar and communication system based on the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) and two interference mitigation frameworks. In the joint radar and communication system the FrFT is used to embed the data information into a radar waveform in order to obtain a signal sharing Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) characteristics while allowing data transmission. Furthermore, in the proposed system multi user operations are allowed by assigning a specific order of the FrFT to each user. In this way, a fractional order division multiplexing can be implemented allowing the allocation of more than one user in the same frequency band with the advantage that the range resolution does not depend on the number of the users that share the same frequency band but only from the assigned of the FrFT. Remarkably, the predicted simulated radar performance of the proposed joint radar and communication system when using Binary Frequency Shift Keying (BFSK) encoding is not significantly affected by the transmitted data. In order to fully describe the proposed waveform design, the signal model when the bits of information are modulated using either BFSK or Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) encoding is derived. This signal model will result also useful in the interference mitigation frameworks. In multi user scenarios to prevent mutual radar interference caused by users that share the same frequency band at the same time, each user has to transmit waveforms that are uncorrelated with those of other users. However, due to spectrum limitations, the uncorrelated property cannot always be satisfied even by using fractional order division multiplexing, thus interference is unavoidable. In order to mitigate the interference, two frameworks are introduced. In a joint radar communication system, the radar also has access to the communication data. With a near-precision reconstruction of the communication signal, this interference can be subtracted. In these two frameworks the interfering signal can be reconstructed using the derived mathematical model of the proposed FrFT waveform. In the first framework the subtraction between the received and reconstructed interference signals is carried out in a coherent manner, where the amplitude and phase of the two signals are taken into account. The performance of this framework is highly depend on the correct estimation of the Doppler frequency of the interfering user. A small error on the Doppler frequency can lead to a lack of synchronization between the received and reconstructed signal. Consequently, the subtraction will not be performed in a correct way and further interference components can be introduced. In order to solve the problem of the lack of the synchronization an alternative framework is developed where the subtraction is carried out in non-coherent manner. In the proposed framework, the subtraction is carried out after that the received radar signal and the reconstructed interference are processed, respectively. The performance is tested on simulated and real signals.
