On Capacity of Active Relaying in Magnetic Induction based Wireless Underground Sensor Networks
Wireless underground sensor networks (WUSNs) present a variety of new
research challenges. Magnetic induction (MI) based transmission has been
proposed to overcome the very harsh propagation conditions in underground
communications in recent years. In this approach, induction coils are utilized
as antennas in the sensor nodes. This solution achieves longer transmission
ranges compared to the traditional electromagnetic (EM) waves based approach.
Furthermore, a passive relaying technique has been proposed in the literature
where additional resonant circuits are deployed between the nodes. However,
this solution is shown to provide only a limited performance improvement under
practical system design contraints. In this work, the potential of an active
relay device is investigated which may improve the performance of the system by
combining the benefits of the traditional wireless relaying and the MI based
signal transmission.Comment: This paper has been accepted for presentation at IEEE ICC 2015. It

On Reliability of Underwater Magnetic Induction Communications with Tri-Axis Coils
Underwater magnetic induction communications (UWMICs) provide a low-power and
high-throughput solution for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), which are
envisioned to explore and monitor the underwater environment. UWMIC with
tri-axis coils increases the reliability of the wireless channel by exploring
the coil orientation diversity. However, the UWMIC channel is different from
typical fading channels and the mutual inductance information (MII) is not
always available. It is not clear the performance of the tri-axis coil MIMO
without MII. Also, its performances with multiple users have not been
investigated. In this paper, we analyze the reliability and multiplexing gain
of UWMICs with tri-axis coils by using coil selection. We optimally select the
transmit and receive coils to reduce the computation complexity and power
consumption and explore the diversity for multiple users. We find that without
using all the coils and MII, we can still achieve reliability. Also, the
multiplexing gain of UWMIC without MII is 5dB smaller than typical terrestrial
fading channels. The results of this paper provide a more power-efficient way
to use UWMICs with tri-axis coils
Non-Invasive Induction Link Model for Implantable Biomedical Microsystems: Pacemaker to Monitor Arrhythmic Patients in Body Area Networks
In this paper, a non-invasive inductive link model for an Implantable
Biomedical Microsystems (IBMs) such as, a pacemaker to monitor Arrhythmic
Patients (APs) in Body Area Networks (BANs) is proposed. The model acts as a
driving source to keep the batteries charged, inside a device called,
pacemaker. The device monitors any drift from natural human heart beats, a
condition of arrythmia and also in turn, produces electrical pulses that create
forced rhythms that, matches with the original normal heart rhythms. It
constantly sends a medical report to the health center to keep the medical
personnel aware of the patient's conditions and let them handle any critical
condition, before it actually happens. Two equivalent models are compared by
carrying the simulations, based on the parameters of voltage gain and link
efficiency. Results depict that the series tuned primary and parallel tuned
secondary circuit achieves the best results for both the parameters, keeping in
view the constraint of coupling co-efficient (k), which should be less than a
value \emph{0.45} as, desirable for the safety of body tissues.Comment: IEEE 8th International Conference on Broadband and Wireless

Communication and Powering Scheme for Wireless and Battery-Less Measurement
The paper presents solution for wireless and battery-less measurement in the enclosed areas. The principle is based on passive RFID, nevertheless this paper is focused on high power-demanding applications such as MEMS accelerometers, gas sensors, piezoresistive strain gauges, etc. Standard FRID communication scheme (sensing the input current change on the primary side) cannot be used in this case, because the communication channel is overloaded by the high power load. Paper presents possible solution which is based on the dual frequency scheme – one frequency for powering and other for the communication. This is ensuring capability for measurement up to several centimeters on the frequency bands 125 kHz and 375 kHz. It can be suitable for continual measurement in isolated systems such as the rotating objects, concrete walls, enclosed plastic barrels, high temperature chambers etc
Magneto-inductive Passive Relaying in Arbitrarily Arranged Networks
We consider a wireless sensor network that uses inductive near-field coupling
for wireless powering or communication, or for both. The severely limited range
of an inductively coupled source-destination pair can be improved using
resonant relay devices, which are purely passive in nature. Utilization of such
magneto-inductive relays has only been studied for regular network topologies,
allowing simplified assumptions on the mutual antenna couplings. In this work
we present an analysis of magneto-inductive passive relaying in arbitrarily
arranged networks. We find that the resulting channel has characteristics
similar to multipath fading: the channel power gain is governed by a
non-coherent sum of phasors, resulting in increased frequency selectivity. We
propose and study two strategies to increase the channel power gain of random
relay networks: i) deactivation of individual relays by open-circuit switching
and ii) frequency tuning. The presented results show that both methods improve
the utilization of available passive relays, leading to reliable and
significant performance gains.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures. To be presented at the IEEE International

Multihop relay techniques for communication range extension in near-field magnetic induction communication systems
In this paper, multihop relaying in RF-based com munications and near field magnetic induction communication (NFMIC) is discussed. Three multihop relay strategies for NFMIC are proposed: Non Line of Sight Magnetic Induction Relay (NLoS-MI Relay), Non Line of Sight Master/Assistant Magnetic Induction Relay1 (NLoS-MAMI Relay1) and Non Line of Sight Master/Assistant Magnetic Induction Relay2 (NLoSMAMI Relay2). In the first approach only one node contributes to the communication, while in the other two techniques (which are based on a master-assistant strategy), two relaying nodes are employed. This paper shows that these three techniques can be used to overcome the problem of dead spots within a body area network and extend the communication range without increasing the transmission power and the antenna size or decreasing receiver sensitivity. The impact of the separation distance between the nodes on the achievable RSS and channel data rate is evaluated for the three techniques. It is demonstrated that the technique which is most effective depends on the specific network topology. Optimum selection of nodes as relay master and assistant based on the location of the nodes is discussed. The paper also studies the impact of the quality factor on achievable data rate. It is shown that to obtain the highest data rate, the optimum quality factor needs to be determined for each proposed cooperative communication method. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER
