Exploiting Known Interference as Green Signal Power for Downlink Beamforming Optimization
We propose a data-aided transmit beamforming scheme for the multi-user multiple-input-single-output (MISO) downlink channel. While conventional beamforming schemes aim at the minimization of the transmit power subject to suppressing interference to guarantee quality of service (QoS) constraints, here we use the knowledge of both data and channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter to exploit, rather than suppress, constructive interference. More specifically, we design a new precoding scheme for the MISO downlink that minimizes the transmit power for generic phase shift keying (PSK) modulated signals. The proposed precoder reduces the transmit power compared to conventional schemes, by adapting the QoS constraints to accommodate constructive interference as a source of useful signal power. By exploiting the power of constructively interfering symbols, the proposed scheme achieves the required QoS at lower transmit power. We extend this concept to the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem, where higher SINR values compared to the conventional SINR balancing optimization are achieved for given transmit power budgets. In addition, we derive equivalent virtual multicast formulations for both optimizations, both of which provide insights of the optimal solution and facilitate the design of a more efficient solver. Finally, we propose a robust beamforming technique to deal with imperfect CSI, that also reduces the transmit power over conventional techniques, while guaranteeing the required QoS. Our simulation and analysis show significant power savings for small scale MISO downlink channels with the proposed data-aided optimization compared to conventional beamforming optimization
Multi-Objective Optimization for Power Efficient Full-Duplex Wireless Communication Systems
In this paper, we investigate power efficient resource allocation algorithm
design for multiuser wireless communication systems employing a full-duplex
(FD) radio base station for serving multiple half-duplex (HD) downlink and
uplink users simultaneously. We propose a multi-objective optimization
framework for achieving two conflicting yet desirable system design objectives,
i.e., total downlink transmit power minimization and total uplink transmit
power minimization, while guaranteeing the quality-of-service of all users. To
this end, the weighted Tchebycheff method is adopted to formulate a
multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP). Although the considered MOOP is
non-convex, we solve it optimally by semidefinite programming relaxation.
Simulation results not only unveil the trade-off between the total downlink and
the total uplink transmit power, but also confirm that the proposed FD system
provides substantial power savings over traditional HD systems.Comment: Accepted for presentation at the IEEE Globecom 2015, San Diego, CA,

Energy-Efficient Symbol-Level Precoding in Multiuser MISO Based on Relaxed Detection Region
This paper addresses the problem of exploiting interference among
simultaneous multiuser transmissions in the downlink of multiple-antenna
systems. Using symbol-level precoding, a new approach towards addressing the
multiuser interference is discussed through jointly utilizing the channel state
information (CSI) and data information (DI). The interference among the data
streams is transformed under certain conditions to a useful signal that can
improve the signal-to-interference noise ratio (SINR) of the downlink
transmissions and as a result the system's energy efficiency. In this context,
new constructive interference precoding techniques that tackle the transmit
power minimization (min power) with individual SINR constraints at each user's
receiver have been proposed. In this paper, we generalize the CI precoding
design under the assumption that the received MPSK symbol can reside in a
relaxed region in order to be correctly detected. Moreover, a weighted
maximization of the minimum SNR among all users is studied taking into account
the relaxed detection region. Symbol error rate analysis (SER) for the proposed
precoding is discussed to characterize the tradeoff between transmit power
reduction and SER increase due to the relaxation. Based on this tradeoff, the
energy efficiency performance of the proposed technique is analyzed. Finally,
extensive numerical results show that the proposed schemes outperform other
state-of-the-art techniques.Comment: Submitted to IEEE transactions on Wireless Communications. arXiv
