    REAL-TIME ADAPTIVE PULSE COMPRESSION ON RECONFIGURABLE, SYSTEM-ON-CHIP (SOC) PLATFORMS

    New radar applications need to perform complex algorithms and process a large quantity of data to generate useful information for the users. This situation has motivated the search for better processing solutions that include low-power high-performance processors, efficient algorithms, and high-speed interfaces. In this work, hardware implementation of adaptive pulse compression algorithms for real-time transceiver optimization is presented, and is based on a System-on-Chip architecture for reconfigurable hardware devices. This study also evaluates the performance of dedicated coprocessors as hardware accelerator units to speed up and improve the computation of computing-intensive tasks such matrix multiplication and matrix inversion, which are essential units to solve the covariance matrix. The tradeoffs between latency and hardware utilization are also presented. Moreover, the system architecture takes advantage of the embedded processor, which is interconnected with the logic resources through high-performance buses, to perform floating-point operations, control the processing blocks, and communicate with an external PC through a customized software interface. The overall system functionality is demonstrated and tested for real-time operations using a Ku-band testbed together with a low-cost channel emulator for different types of waveforms

    Signal processing architectures for automotive high-resolution MIMO radar systems

    To date, the digital signal processing for an automotive radar sensor has been handled in an efficient way by general purpose signal processors and microcontrollers. However, increasing resolution requirements for automated driving on the one hand, as well as rapidly growing numbers of manufactured sensors on the other hand, can provoke a paradigm change in the near future. The design and development of highly specialized hardware accelerators could become a viable option - at least for the most demanding processing steps with data rates of several gigabits per second. In this work, application-specific signal processing architectures for future high-resolution multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar sensors are designed, implemented, investigated and optimized. A focus is set on real-time performance such that even sophisticated algorithms can be computed sufficiently fast. The full processing chain from the received baseband signals to a list of detections is considered, comprising three major steps: Spectrum analysis, target detection and direction of arrival estimation. The developed architectures are further implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and important measurements like resource consumption, power dissipation or data throughput are evaluated and compared with other examples from literature. A substantial dataset, based on more than 3600 different parametrizations and variants, has been established with the help of a model-based design space exploration and is provided as part of this work. Finally, an experimental radar sensor has been built and is used under real-world conditions to verify the effectiveness of the proposed signal processing architectures.Bisher wurde die digitale Signalverarbeitung für automobile Radarsensoren auf eine effiziente Art und Weise von universell verwendbaren Mikroprozessoren bewältigt. Jedoch können steigende Anforderungen an das Auflösungsvermögen für hochautomatisiertes Fahren einerseits, sowie schnell wachsende Stückzahlen produzierter Sensoren andererseits, einen Paradigmenwechsel in naher Zukunft bewirken. Die Entwicklung von hochgradig spezialisierten Hardwarebeschleunigern könnte sich als eine praktikable Alternative etablieren - zumindest für die anspruchsvollsten Rechenschritte mit Datenraten von mehreren Gigabits pro Sekunde. In dieser Arbeit werden anwendungsspezifische Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen für zukünftige, hochauflösende, MIMO Radarsensoren entworfen, realisiert, untersucht und optimiert. Der Fokus liegt dabei stets auf der Echtzeitfähigkeit, sodass selbst anspruchsvolle Algorithmen in einer ausreichend kurzen Zeit berechnet werden können. Die komplette Signalverarbeitungskette, beginnend von den empfangenen Signalen im Basisband bis hin zu einer Liste von Detektion, wird in dieser Arbeit behandelt. Die Kette gliedert sich im Wesentlichen in drei größere Teilschritte: Spektralanalyse, Zieldetektion und Winkelschätzung. Des Weiteren werden die entwickelten Architekturen auf einem FPGA implementiert und wichtige Kennzahlen wie Ressourcenverbrauch, Stromverbrauch oder Datendurchsatz ausgewertet und mit anderen Beispielen aus der Literatur verglichen. Ein umfangreicher Datensatz, welcher mehr als 3600 verschiedene Parametrisierungen und Varianten beinhaltet, wurde mit Hilfe einer modellbasierten Entwurfsraumexploration erstellt und ist in dieser Arbeit enthalten. Schließlich wurde ein experimenteller Radarsensor aufgebaut und dazu benutzt, die entworfenen Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen unter realen Umgebungsbedingungen zu verifizieren

    The Miniaturization of the AFIT Random Noise Radar

    Advances in technology and signal processing techniques have opened the door to using an UWB random noise waveform for radar imaging. This unique, low probability of intercept waveform has piqued the interest of the U.S. DoD as well as law enforcement and intelligence agencies alike. While AFIT\u27s noise radar has made significant progress, the current architecture needs to be redesigned to meet the space constraints and power limitations of an aerial platform. This research effort is AFIT\u27s first attempt at RNR miniaturization and centers on two primary objectives: 1) identifying a signal processor that is compact, energy efficient, and capable of performing the demanding signal processing routines and 2) developing a high-speed correlation algorithm that is suited for the target hardware. A correlation routine was chosen as the design goal because of its importance to the noise radar\u27s ability to estimate the presence of a return signal. Furthermore, it is a computationally intensive process that was used to determine the feasibility of the processing component. To determine the performance of the proposed algorithm, results from simulation and experiments involving representative hardware were compared to the current system. Post-implementation reports of the FPGA-based correlator indicated zero timing failures, less than a Watt of power consumption, and a 44% utilization of the Virtex-5\u27s logic resources

    Algorithms and Circuits for Analog-Digital Hybrid Multibeam Arrays

    Fifth generation (5G) and beyond wireless communication systems will rely heavily on larger antenna arrays combined with beamforming to mitigate the high free-space path-loss that prevails in millimeter-wave (mmW) and above frequencies. Sharp beams that can support wide bandwidths are desired both at the transmitter and the receiver to leverage the glut of bandwidth available at these frequency bands. Further, multiple simultaneous sharp beams are imperative for such systems to exploit mmW/sub-THz wireless channels using multiple reflected paths simultaneously. Therefore, multibeam antenna arrays that can support wider bandwidths are a key enabler for 5G and beyond systems. In general, N-beam systems using N-element antenna arrays will involve circuit complexities of the order of N2. This dissertation investigates new analog, digital and hybrid low complexity multibeam beamforming algorithms and circuits for reducing the associated high size, weight, and power (SWaP) complexities in larger multibeam arrays. The research efforts on the digital beamforming aspect propose the use of a new class of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) approximations for multibeam generation to eliminate the need for digital multipliers in the beamforming circuitry. For this, 8-, 16- and 32-beam multiplierless multibeam algorithms have been proposed for uniform linear array applications. A 2.4 GHz 16-element array receiver setup and a 5.8 GHz 32-element array receiver system which use field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) as digital backend have been built for real-time experimental verification of the digital multiplierless algorithms. The multiplierless algorithms have been experimentally verified by digitally measuring beams. It has been shown that the measured beams from the multiplierless algorithms are in good agreement with the exact counterpart algorithms. Analog realizations of the proposed approximate DFT transforms have also been investigated leading to low-complex, high bandwidth circuits in CMOS. Further, a novel approach for reducing the circuit complexity of analog true-time delay (TTD) N-beam beamforming networks using N-element arrays has been proposed for wideband squint-free operation. A sparse factorization of the N-beam delay Vandermonde beamforming matrix is used to reduce the total amount of TTD elements that are needed for obtaining N number of beams in a wideband array. The method has been verified using measured responses of CMOS all-pass filters (APFs). The wideband squint-free multibeam algorithm is also used to propose a new low-complexity hybrid beamforming architecture targeting future 5G mmW systems. Apart from that, the dissertation also explores multibeam beamforming architectures for uniform circular arrays (UCAs). An algorithm having N log N circuit complexity for simultaneous generation of N-beams in an N-element UCA is explored and verified

    Implementing FFT-based digital channelized receivers on FPGA platforms

    This paper presents an in-depth study of the implementation and characterization of fast Fourier transform (FFT) pipelined architectures suitable for broadband digital channelized receivers. When implementing the FFT algorithm on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platforms, the primary goal is to maximize throughput and minimize area. Feedback and feedforward architectures have been analyzed regarding key design parameters: radix, bitwidth, number of points and stage scaling. Moreover, a simplification of the FFT algorithm, the monobit FFT, has been implemented in order to achieve faster real time performance in broadband digital receivers. The influence of the hardware implementation on the performance of digital channelized receivers has been analyzed in depth, revealing interesting implementation trade-offs which should be taken into account when designing this kind of signal processing systems on FPGA platforms

    Radar systems can be extremely useful for applications in autonomous vehicles. This paper seeks to show how radar systems function and how they can apply to improve autonomous vehicles. First, the basics of radar systems are presented to introduce the basic terminology involved with radar. Then, the topic of phased arrays is presented because of their application to autonomous vehicles. The topic of digital signal processing is also discussed because of its importance for all modern radar systems. Finally, examples of radar systems based on the presented knowledge are discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of radar systems in autonomous vehicles

    Embedded System Optimization of Radar Post-processing in an ARM CPU Core

    Algorithms executed on the radar processor system contributes to a significant performance bottleneck of the overall radar system. One key performance concern is the latency in target detection when dealing with hard deadline systems. Research has shown software optimization as one major contributor to radar system performance improvements. This thesis aims at software optimizations using a manual and automatic approach and analyzing the results to make informed future decisions while working with an ARM processor system. In order to ascertain an optimized implementation, a question put forward was whether the algorithms on the ARM processor could work with a 6-antenna implementation without a decline in the performance. However, an answer would also help project how many additional algorithms can still be added without performance decline. The manual optimization was done based on the quantitative analysis of the software execution time. The manual optimization approach looked at the vectorization strategy using the NEON vector register on the ARM CPU to reimplement the initial Constant False Alarm Rate(CFAR) Detection algorithm. An additional optimization approach was eliminating redundant loops while going through the Range Gates and Doppler filters. In order to determine the best compiler for automatic code optimization for the radar algorithms on the ARM processor, the GCC and Clang compilers were used to compile the initial algorithms and the optimized implementation on the radar post-processing stage. Analysis of the optimization results showed that it is possible to run the radar post-processing algorithms on the ARM processor at the 6-antenna implementation without system load stress. In addition, the results show an excellent headroom margin based on the defined scenario. The result analysis further revealed that the effect of dynamic memory allocation could not be underrated in situations where performance is a significant concern. Additional statements from the result demonstrated that the GCC and Clang compiler has their strength and weaknesses when used in the compilation. One limiting factor to note on the optimization using the NEON register is the sample size’s effect on the optimization implementation. Although it fits into the test samples used based on the defined scenario, there might be varying results in varying window cell size situations that might not necessarily improve the time constraints

    Design of a reusable distributed arithmetic filter and its application to the affine projection algorithm

    Digital signal processing (DSP) is widely used in many applications spanning the spectrum from audio processing to image and video processing to radar and sonar processing. At the core of digital signal processing applications is the digital filter which are implemented in two ways, using either finite impulse response (FIR) filters or infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. The primary difference between FIR and IIR is that for FIR filters, the output is dependent only on the inputs, while for IIR filters the output is dependent on the inputs and the previous outputs. FIR filters also do not sur from stability issues stemming from the feedback of the output to the input that aect IIR filters. In this thesis, an architecture for FIR filtering based on distributed arithmetic is presented. The proposed architecture has the ability to implement large FIR filters using minimal hardware and at the same time is able to complete the FIR filtering operation in minimal amount of time and delay when compared to typical FIR filter implementations. The proposed architecture is then used to implement the fast affine projection adaptive algorithm, an algorithm that is typically used with large filter sizes. The fast affine projection algorithm has a high computational burden that limits the throughput, which in turn restricts the number of applications. However, using the proposed FIR filtering architecture, the limitations on throughput are removed. The implementation of the fast affine projection adaptive algorithm using distributed arithmetic is unique to this thesis.
