    Get PDF
Spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) is a multi-carrier signalling format, which has a higher spectral efficiency than conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. This work presents preliminary investigations into the use of power allocation for SEFDM. In this method, different subcarriers within the same SEFDM symbol are allocated different power levels. Results show that such power allocation is beneficial to SEFDM detection, with a particular case studied here of the suboptimal fixed sphere decoder (FSD) detector. The investigated method results in a drastic complexity reduction compared to FSD without power allocation for the same error performance

This work presents preliminary investigations into the use of power allocation for the multi-carrier non-orthogonal spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) signalling format. SEFDM is utilized to improve the spectral efficiency compared to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), by violating the orthogonality condition and getting the sub-carriers closer to each other. In this paper, subcarriers within the same SEFDM symbol are allocated different power levels. Results show that such power allocation is beneficial to SEFDM from several perspectives: i) Overall system stability enhancement; ii) a drastic complexity reduction in SEFDM detector; iii) peak to average power ratio (PAPR) performance improvement

Multi-carrier transmission may be considered one of the important developments in wireless communications. Spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) is a promising multi-carrier modulation which can significantly improve utilization of spectral. The SEFDM has high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) like any multicarrier system. High PAPR reduces the random forest (RF) transmitter power amplifier efficiency, which minimize the use of this technique in limited power supply transmitters. In this work, a repeated clipping and filtering method is introduced to reduce the PAPR in SEFDM with minimum or no out of band radiation. The results of the simulated approach show that the PAPR of the SEFDM was reduced from 16.264 dB to 7.9146 dB with marginal degradation in system performance when the clipping ratio varied from 4 to 2

The ever-increasing demand on data services places unprecedented technical requirements on networks capacity. With wireless systems having significant roles in broadband delivery, innovative approaches to their development are imperative. By leveraging new spectral resources available at millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies, future systems can utilize new signal structures and new system architectures in order to achieve long-term sustainable solutions. This thesis proposes the holistic development of efficient and cost-effective techniques and systems which make high-speed data transmission at mm-wave feasible. In this paradigm, system designs, signal processing, and measurement techniques work toward a single goal; to achieve satisfactory system level key performance indicators (KPIs). Two intimately-related objectives are simultaneously addressed: the realization of efficient mm-wave data transmission and the development of measurement techniques to enable and assist the design and evaluation of mm-wave circuits. The standard approach to increase spectral efficiency is to increase the modulation order at the cost of higher transmission power. To improve upon this, a signal structure called spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) is utilized. SEFDM adds an additional dimension of continuously tunable spectral efficiency enhancement. Two new variants of SEFDM are implemented and experimentally demonstrated, where both variants are shown to outperform standard signals.A low-cost low-complexity mm-wave transmitter architecture is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A simple phase retarder predistorter and a frequency multiplier are utilized to successfully generate spectrally efficient mm-wave signals while simultaneously mitigating various issues found in conventional mm-wave systems.A measurement technique to characterize circuits and components under antenna array mutual coupling effects is proposed and demonstrated. With minimal setup requirement, the technique effectively and conveniently maps prescribed transmission scenarios to the measurement environment and offers evaluations of the components in terms of relevant KPIs in addition to conventional metrics. Finally, a technique to estimate transmission and reflection coefficients is proposed and demonstrated. In one variant, the technique enables the coefficients to be estimated using wideband modulated signals, suitable for implementation in measurements performed under real usage scenarios. In another variant, the technique enhances the precision of noisy S-parameter measurements, suitable for characterizations of wideband mm-wave components

Waveform-Defined Security: A Low-Cost Framework for Secure Communications

    Get PDF
Communication security could be enhanced at physical layer but at the cost of complex algorithms and redundant hardware, which would render traditional physical layer security (PLS) techniques unsuitable for use with resource-constrained communication systems. This work investigates a waveform-defined security (WDS) framework, which differs fundamentally from traditional PLS techniques used in today’s systems. The framework is not dependent on channel conditions such as signal power advantage and channel state information (CSI). Therefore, the framework is more reliable than channel dependent beamforming and artificial noise (AN) techniques. In addition, the framework is more than just increasing the cost of eavesdropping. By intentionally tuning waveform patterns to weaken signal feature diversity and enhance feature similarity, eavesdroppers will not be able to identify correctly signal formats. The wrong classification of signal formats would result in subsequent detection errors even when an eavesdropper uses brute-force detection techniques. To get a robust WDS framework, three impact factors, namely training data feature, oversampling factor and bandwidth compression factor (BCF) offset, are investigated. An optimal WDS waveform pattern is obtained at the end after a joint study of the three factors. To ensure a valid eavesdropping model, artificial intelligence (AI) dependent signal classifiers are designed followed by optimal performance achievable signal detectors. To show the compatibility in available communication systems, the WDS framework is successfully integrated in IEEE 802.11a with nearly no adding computational complexity. Finally, a low-cost software-defined radio (SDR) experiment is designed to verify the feasibility of the WDS framework in resource-constrained communications

This paper presents the design and the experimental demonstration of transmission of spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) signals, using a single 5-GHz channel, from 81 to 86 CHz in the E-hand frequency allocation. A purpose-built E-band SEFDM experimental demonstrator, consisting of transmitter and receiver GaAs microwave integrated circuits, along with a complete chain of digital signal processing is explained. Solutions are proposed to solve the channel and phase offset estimation and equalization issues, which arise from the well-known intercarrier interference between the SEFDM signal subcarriers. This paper shows the highest transmission rate of 12 Gb/s over a bandwidth varying between 2.67 to 4 CHz depending on the compression level of the SEFDM signals, which results in a spectral efficiency improvement by up to 50%, compared to the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation format

    DFT-spread spectrally efficient non-orthogonal FDMA

Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) has been comprehensively investigated and standardized in 4th generation (4G) and 5th generation (5G) mobile systems. Its significant advantage is low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which makes it suitable for uplink channel communications. However, over a long time period, SC-FDMA has not made breakthrough especially in data rate enhancement, which may not catch up with the next generation evolution in communications. This work proposes to use a non-orthogonal waveform in SC-FDMA to promote a new concept, termed single carrier spectrally efficient frequency division multiple access (SC-SEFDMA). This non-orthogonal single carrier access technique maintains essentially similar complexity as SC-FDMA but advantageously can either achieve higher data rate for the same amount of power consumption or the same data rate with less power consumption

Design and Prototyping of Hybrid Analogue Digital Multiuser MIMO Beamforming for Non-Orthogonal Signals

To enable user diversity and multiplexing gains, a fully digital precoding multiple input multiple output (MIMO) architecture is typically applied. However, a large number of radio frequency (RF) chains make the system unrealistic to low-cost communications. Therefore, a practical three-stage hybrid analogue-digital precoding architecture, occupying fewer RF chains, is proposed aiming for a non-orthogonal IoT signal in low-cost multiuser MIMO systems. The non-orthogonal waveform can flexibly save spectral resources for massive devices connections or improve data rate without consuming extra spectral resources. The hybrid precoding is divided into three stages including analogue-domain, digital-domain and waveform-domain. A codebook based beam selection simplifies the analogue-domain beamforming via phase-only tuning. Digital-domain precoding can fine-tune the codebook shaped beam and resolve multiuser interference in terms of both signal amplitude and phase. In the end, the waveform-domain precoding manages the self-created inter carrier interference (ICI) of the non-orthogonal signal. This work designs over-the-air signal transmission experiments for fully digital and hybrid precoding systems on software defined radio (SDR) devices. Results reveal that waveform precoding accuracy can be enhanced by hybrid precoding. Compared to a transmitter with the same RF chain resources, hybrid precoding significantly outperforms fully digital precoding by up to 15.6 dB error vector magnitude (EVM) gain. A fully digital system with the same number of antennas clearly requires more RF chains and therefore is low power-, space- and cost- efficient. Therefore, the proposed three-stage hybrid precoding is a quite suitable solution to non-orthogonal IoT applications

This thesis explores engineering studies and designs aiming to meeting the requirements of enhancing capacity and energy efficiency for next generation communication networks. Challenges of spectrum scarcity and energy constraints are addressed and new technologies are proposed, analytically investigated and examined. The thesis commences by reviewing studies on spectrally and energy-efficient techniques, with a special focus on non-orthogonal multicarrier modulation, particularly spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM). Rigorous theoretical and mathematical modelling studies of SEFDM are presented. Moreover, to address the potential application of SEFDM under the 5th generation new radio (5G NR) heterogeneous numerologies, simulation-based studies of SEFDM coexisting with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are conducted. New signal formats and corresponding transceiver structure are designed, using a Hilbert transform filter pair for shaping pulses. Detailed modelling and numerical investigations show that the proposed signal doubles spectral efficiency without performance degradation, with studies of two signal formats; uncoded narrow-band internet of things (NB-IoT) signals and unframed turbo coded multi-carrier signals. The thesis also considers using constellation shaping techniques and SEFDM for capacity enhancement in 5G system. Probabilistic shaping for SEFDM is proposed and modelled to show both transmission energy reduction and bandwidth saving with advantageous flexibility for data rate adaptation. Expanding on constellation shaping to improve performance further, a comparative study of multidimensional modulation techniques is carried out. A four-dimensional signal, with better noise immunity is investigated, for which metaheuristic optimisation algorithms are studied, developed, and conducted to optimise bit-to-symbol mapping. Finally, a specially designed machine learning technique for signal and system design in physical layer communications is proposed, utilising the application of autoencoder-based end-to-end learning. Multidimensional signal modulation with multidimensional constellation shaping is proposed and optimised by using machine learning techniques, demonstrating significant improvement in spectral and energy efficiencies

Non-orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing with Index Modulation

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a well-established technique in wired and wireless communications due to its high spectral efficiency compared to other multicarrier transmission schemes. However, the explosion of Internet of Things (IoT) has demanded a more spectrally-efficient technique to utilize small bandwidths, on which numerous low-power low-rate devices operate. This thesis aims to provide solutions for this problem. First, the integration of index modulation to fast-OFDM, which is a special variant of OFDM, is investigated. The highest obtainable bit rate of this system is derived, which demonstrates enhancements compared to OFDM systems in the low-power low-rate regions. Furthermore, an improved one-dimension constellation is found to optimize the overall bit error rate (BER) of this system. Numerical results show that the proposed system exhibits enhancements in both bit rate and error performance, leading to higher spectral efficiency compared to OFDM in the low-power regions. The second part of the thesis is concerned with reducing the bandwidth consumed by multicarrier transmissions. This results in the mutual orthogonality among subchannels being relaxed, yielding a Non-orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (NFDM) system. The main contribution in this part includes a novel and feasible design for NFDM systems, which is capable of eliminating inter-channel interference (ICI), which is the major limitation of the conventional NFDM system. Because ICI is completely eliminated, the BER performance of the proposed system is the same as that of an OFDM system over additive white Gaussian noise channels. The power spectrum density (PSD) of the proposed system is also investigated, leading to design guidelines and tradeoffs between the PSD shape and the system's bit rate. Finally, index modulation is incorporated in the proposed NFDM systems. Thanks to our ICI-free design of NFDM, this combined system (NFDM-IM) and fast-OFDM-IM share a similar simple two-stage signal detection mechanism. Improved QAM constellations are found for NFDM-IM systems to optimize their overall BER. Obtained results show that with low modulation orders such as 8-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), NFDM-IM systems employing the improved constellation achieve BER performance close to that of NFDM in the low BER regions. With equivalent occupied bandwidth and error performance, an NFDM-IM system with optimal 8-QAM constellation produces better spectral efficiency than the one using the conventional hexagonal constellation
