Advances in large-scale neural recording technology have significantly improved the capacity to further elucidate the neural code underlying complex cognitive processes. This thesis aimed to investigate two research questions in rodent models. First, what is the role of the hippocampus in memory and specifically what is the underlying neural code that contributes to spatial memory and navigational decision-making. Second, how is social cognition represented in the medial prefrontal cortex at the level of individual neurons. To start, the thesis begins by investigating memory and social cognition in the context of healthy and diseased states that use non-invasive methods (i.e. fMRI and animal behavioural studies). The main body of the thesis then shifts to developing our fundamental understanding of the neural mechanisms underpinning these cognitive processes by applying computational techniques to ana lyse stable large-scale neural recordings. To achieve this, tailored calcium imaging and behaviour preprocessing computational pipelines were developed and optimised for use in social interaction and spatial navigation experimental analysis. In parallel, a review was conducted on methods for multivariate/neural population analysis. A comparison of multiple neural manifold learning (NML) algorithms identified that non linear algorithms such as UMAP are more adaptable across datasets of varying noise and behavioural complexity. Furthermore, the review visualises how NML can be applied to disease states in the brain and introduces the secondary analyses that can be used to enhance or characterise a neural manifold. Lastly, the preprocessing and analytical pipelines were combined to investigate the neural mechanisms in volved in social cognition and spatial memory. The social cognition study explored how neural firing in the medial Prefrontal cortex changed as a function of the social dominance paradigm, the "Tube Test". The univariate analysis identified an ensemble of behavioural-tuned neurons that fire preferentially during specific behaviours such as "pushing" or "retreating" for the animal’s own behaviour and/or the competitor’s behaviour. Furthermore, in dominant animals, the neural population exhibited greater average firing than that of subordinate animals. Next, to investigate spatial memory, a spatial recency task was used, where rats learnt to navigate towards one of three reward locations and then recall the rewarded location of the session. During the task, over 1000 neurons were recorded from the hippocampal CA1 region for five rats over multiple sessions. Multivariate analysis revealed that the sequence of neurons encoding an animal’s spatial position leading up to a rewarded location was also active in the decision period before the animal navigates to the rewarded location. The result posits that prospective replay of neural sequences in the hippocampal CA1 region could provide a mechanism by which decision-making is supported

The Impact of WWII and Changes Brought by the War on a Small Kentucky Community

War is a regular tool that brings changes and new opportunities for people. For the people of Logan County, life was rather stagnated between the American Civil War and WWII. During the Civil War Logan County played a very important role in the pro-Confederate movement in Kentucky, even housing multiple meetings and a convention with the goal of Kentucky joining the Confederacy. While this did not happen, this movement continued in the years that followed the war, as a massive Confederate hangover reigned over the county. This hangover, which can be associated with the “lost cause” dominated the way of life for decades. Many people in Logan County did not want change. They desired their pre-Civil War life, and ideas such as industrialization and acceptance of the Thirteenth Amendment were ideas that wany in Logan County did not support. The period was filled with violence and aggression, much of which dated back to the days of the war, and this continued until the WWII Era. It is during WWII that the people at home and those that served were so impacted by the war that they wanted to change. They now wanted new industries, they wanted more news, and they wanted more opportunities. Each of these are routed in WWII, and in the years that followed more changes occurred in the county than in the decades before the war. WWII brought Logan County into the 20th Century and changed the lives of the people in the county, in a way that did not happen before the war. Thus, making the WWII Era the most important event in the county’s history by bringing changes like factories, hospitals, a radio station and others after the war ended

This study focuses on the innovation of China’s cultural diplomacy (CCD) by means of the Confucius Institute (CI). The main contents revolve around the following research goals: 1) to understand the strategic framework and practical path of CCD, and to clarify the context of its inheritance and innovation; 2) to analyze whether the CI, epitomized as a crucial innovation of CCD, has improved China’s national image in Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs) and enhanced the attraction and international competitiveness of Chinese culture; and 3) to explore how China can better formulate its CD strategy in line with the exigencies of the modern era. The study combines the methods of literature review, case study, and questionnaire research to explore the topics from different perspectives to strengthen the scientific nature of the research results. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the connotation and value of CD. Chapter 2 expounds the development and innovation of CCD. Chapter 3 systematically summarizes China’s cultural interaction in its diplomatic process with PSCs. Chapter 4 elaborates on the CI in terms of its operation mode and diplomatic means. Chapter 5 forms the core of the study and involves empirical analysis of case-study and questionnaire data. It aims to investigate the functions, public image, influence, and practical means of CIs in the process of CD. Major findings indicate that CIs in PSCs have achieved ideal social feedback and play a positive role in shaping the image of China. However, according to the different continents where CIs are located, the survey results show distinct characteristics which are closely related to China’s different foreign policies towards Latin America, Europe, and Africa and are determined by the historical experiences and national conditions of the various countries. The future task for CCD is to clarify China’s institutional roots and the cultural genes behind its development by using cultural exchanges and China’s fluid culture to convey a message of China’s pursuit of peace, development, and cooperation. The lifecycle of affirmative action policies and its effect on effort and sabotage behavior

    Get PDF
A main goal of affirmative action (AA) policies is to enable disadvantaged groups to compete with their privileged counterparts. Existing theoretical and empirical research documents that incorporating AA can result in both more egalitarian outcomes and higher exerted efforts. However, the direct behavioral effects of the introduction and removal of such policies are still under-researched. It is also unclear how specific AA policy instruments, for instance, head- start for a disadvantaged group or handicap for the privileged group, affect behavior. We examine these questions in a laboratory experiment in which individuals participate in a real- effort tournament and can sabotage each other. We find that AA does not necessarily result in higher effort. High performers that already experienced an existing AA-free tournament reduce their effort levels after the introduction of the AA policy. There is less sabotage under AA when the tournament started directly with the AA regime. The removal of AA policies, however, significantly intensifies sabotage. Finally, there are no overall systematic differences between handicap and head-start in terms of effort provision or sabotaging behavior

On the Rhetoric of Sports Heroism in Ancient and Modern Times

    Get PDF
Contemporary fascination with sports champions is the subject of many sociological and psychological analyses. The article complements this multi-level perspective with philosophical analyses in the field of the history of ideas and rhetorical communication. It presents the idea of sports heroism as a historically developing form of communication discourse. The premise is the thesis that the figure of a sports hero is each time a creation of a communication context, i.e. a message and interpretation using axio-normative, appealing and persuasive rhetorical means. In this rhetoric, objective and measurable sports mastery is strengthened and transformed into a communicative image enriched with moral, social, aesthetic, ludic-hedonistic and marketing meanings. The article is located in the humanistic area of the history of culture, and its reflection, which is the fruit of desk research, is developed in relation to the existing thematic literature using the hermeneutic principle of the fusion of interpretative horizons. The aim is to show the spectrum of meaning pertaining to the sports hero’s character components, starting from Greek athletics, through the discourse of ancient philosophers (developed by Coubertin) to the media fame of today’s sports champions. The rhetoric and practice of sporting mastery are two sides of the sporting coin

Japanese Expert Teachers' Understanding of the Application of Rhythm in Judo: a New Pedagogy

    Get PDF
Aim The aim of this research is to understand the application of rhythm in judo through the experience of expert Japanese coaches. Background Scientists and experienced coaches agree rhythm is an important skill in people’s everyday life. There is currently no research that investigates the importance of rhythm in judo. People with a highly developed sense of rhythm, move properly, breathe properly, or begin and finish work at the right time. Where sport is concerned, motion and dance can play an important role not only in the improvement of performance, but also in the reduction, or even prevention of, injuries. Those who are naturally musically inclined (have a musical ear) may find they can improve their technique faster than others, and this is something that, by investigating the way expert coaches understand the application of rhythm in judo, this research seeks to understand. As Lange, (1970) stated, factors of movement are ‘weight, space, time, and flow on the background of the general flux of movement in proportional arrangements’ (Bradley, 2008; Selioni, 2013; Youngerman, 1976), therefore, this research will investigate the interaction of body and mind. Dance training as well as judo are somatic experiences that have as their ultimate goal the attainment of a skilled body. With quality training an athlete gains an increased awareness of their body which leads to better control of movement and is very important for judo athletes. This training is found in Japanese kabuki dance (Hahn, 2007), the Greek syrtaki dance (Zografou & Pateraki, 2007), and in walking techniques used in the traditional and Olympic sports of Japanese judo and Greek wrestling. Methods Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was the most suitable data analysis approach for this study for a number of reasons, mainly because it was considered to most closely reflect the author's realist epistemological view. The idiographic approach and framework, particularly on IPA, was regarded as a useful framework in which the current topic could meaningfully be explored. As this study is one of the first to explore this new thematic area, IPA was the preferred approach to address the goal of providing a detailed account of the expert’s experience. Therefore, semi-structured interviews were used as a data source. This is the most conventional form of data collection using IPA and most closely reflects the researcher-participant relationship. Semi-structured interviews provide considerable flexibility by allowing the researcher to be guided by the phenomena of interest to the participant. In this study, purposive sampling was achieved using inclusion criteria pertaining to the research question. Using the ranking system criteria based on the belt in combination with age employed by the International Judo Federation (IJF) and Kodokan Judo Institute, six expert coaches of forty years old and over with a minimum belt rank of 6th dan were selected as a sample. Results Both interviews and the codification process contributed to new findings regarding the application of rhythm to judo, and judo itself as a pedagogical tool. The diagrammatic model can be considered a 'guideline' to the phenomena deemed most significant. The personal significance of rhythm in judo was evidenced by the frequency with which the interviewees naturally referred to it during the interviews. A number of interviewees said that it was important for rhythm to be second nature. Rhythm was also described as an integrated and representative element in the context of training. This framework was seen as essential in providing the reader with a contextualised understanding of the phenomena considered most important for the current research. Interviewees reported various motives for employing training in rhythm such as faster technical development, better attack/defence, fitness, speed, skills acquisition, personal and spiritual growth, competition results. Conclusions This study offers first-hand accounts from professional coaches of a previously unknown phenomena, namely the use of rhythm in judo, and sheds insight on how judo experts understand rhythm in terms of training, competition, and personal growth. These findings suggest that outside of training, coaches play an important role in teaching, mentoring, and leading students. In conclusion, the research revealed four important points which form the basis of a new method of teaching judo: pedagogy, skills, rhythm and movement

Insights into the accuracy of social scientists' forecasts of societal change

How well can social scientists predict societal change, and what processes underlie their predictions? To answer these questions, we ran two forecasting tournaments testing the accuracy of predictions of societal change in domains commonly studied in the social sciences: ideological preferences, political polarization, life satisfaction, sentiment on social media, and gender–career and racial bias. After we provided them with historical trend data on the relevant domain, social scientists submitted pre-registered monthly forecasts for a year (Tournament 1; N = 86 teams and 359 forecasts), with an opportunity to update forecasts on the basis of new data six months later (Tournament 2; N = 120 teams and 546 forecasts). Benchmarking forecasting accuracy revealed that social scientists’ forecasts were on average no more accurate than those of simple statistical models (historical means, random walks or linear regressions) or the aggregate forecasts of a sample from the general public (N = 802). However, scientists were more accurate if they had scientific expertise in a prediction domain, were interdisciplinary, used simpler models and based predictions on prior data
