Realistic multi-microphone data simulation for distant speech recognition
The availability of realistic simulated corpora is of key importance for the
future progress of distant speech recognition technology. The reliability,
flexibility and low computational cost of a data simulation process may
ultimately allow researchers to train, tune and test different techniques in a
variety of acoustic scenarios, avoiding the laborious effort of directly
recording real data from the targeted environment.
In the last decade, several simulated corpora have been released to the
research community, including the data-sets distributed in the context of
projects and international challenges, such as CHiME and REVERB. These efforts
were extremely useful to derive baselines and common evaluation frameworks for
comparison purposes. At the same time, in many cases they highlighted the need
of a better coherence between real and simulated conditions.
In this paper, we examine this issue and we describe our approach to the
generation of realistic corpora in a domestic context. Experimental validation,
conducted in a multi-microphone scenario, shows that a comparable performance
trend can be observed with both real and simulated data across different
recognition frameworks, acoustic models, as well as multi-microphone processing
techniques.Comment: Proc. of Interspeech 201
Ad Hoc Microphone Array Calibration: Euclidean Distance Matrix Completion Algorithm and Theoretical Guarantees
This paper addresses the problem of ad hoc microphone array calibration where
only partial information about the distances between microphones is available.
We construct a matrix consisting of the pairwise distances and propose to
estimate the missing entries based on a novel Euclidean distance matrix
completion algorithm by alternative low-rank matrix completion and projection
onto the Euclidean distance space. This approach confines the recovered matrix
to the EDM cone at each iteration of the matrix completion algorithm. The
theoretical guarantees of the calibration performance are obtained considering
the random and locally structured missing entries as well as the measurement
noise on the known distances. This study elucidates the links between the
calibration error and the number of microphones along with the noise level and
the ratio of missing distances. Thorough experiments on real data recordings
and simulated setups are conducted to demonstrate these theoretical insights. A
significant improvement is achieved by the proposed Euclidean distance matrix
completion algorithm over the state-of-the-art techniques for ad hoc microphone
array calibration.Comment: In Press, available online, August 1, 2014.

Structured Sparsity Models for Multiparty Speech Recovery from Reverberant Recordings
We tackle the multi-party speech recovery problem through modeling the
acoustic of the reverberant chambers. Our approach exploits structured sparsity
models to perform room modeling and speech recovery. We propose a scheme for
characterizing the room acoustic from the unknown competing speech sources
relying on localization of the early images of the speakers by sparse
approximation of the spatial spectra of the virtual sources in a free-space
model. The images are then clustered exploiting the low-rank structure of the
spectro-temporal components belonging to each source. This enables us to
identify the early support of the room impulse response function and its unique
map to the room geometry. To further tackle the ambiguity of the reflection
ratios, we propose a novel formulation of the reverberation model and estimate
the absorption coefficients through a convex optimization exploiting joint
sparsity model formulated upon spatio-spectral sparsity of concurrent speech
representation. The acoustic parameters are then incorporated for separating
individual speech signals through either structured sparse recovery or inverse
filtering the acoustic channels. The experiments conducted on real data
recordings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for
multi-party speech recovery and recognition.Comment: 31 page
Spherical microphone array acoustic rake receivers
Several signal independent acoustic rake receivers are proposed for speech dereverberation using spherical microphone arrays. The proposed rake designs take advantage of multipaths, by separately capturing and combining early reflections with the direct path. We investigate several approaches in combining reflections with the direct path source signal, including the development of beam patterns that point nulls at all preceding reflections. The proposed designs are tested in experimental simulations and their dereverberation performances evaluated using objective measures. For the tested configuration, the proposed designs achieve higher levels of dereverberation compared to conventional signal independent beamforming systems; achieving up to 3.6 dB improvement in the direct-to-reverberant ratio over the plane-wave decomposition beamformer
Towards End-to-End Acoustic Localization using Deep Learning: from Audio Signal to Source Position Coordinates
This paper presents a novel approach for indoor acoustic source localization
using microphone arrays and based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The
proposed solution is, to the best of our knowledge, the first published work in
which the CNN is designed to directly estimate the three dimensional position
of an acoustic source, using the raw audio signal as the input information
avoiding the use of hand crafted audio features. Given the limited amount of
available localization data, we propose in this paper a training strategy based
on two steps. We first train our network using semi-synthetic data, generated
from close talk speech recordings, and where we simulate the time delays and
distortion suffered in the signal that propagates from the source to the array
of microphones. We then fine tune this network using a small amount of real
data. Our experimental results show that this strategy is able to produce
networks that significantly improve existing localization methods based on
\textit{SRP-PHAT} strategies. In addition, our experiments show that our CNN
method exhibits better resistance against varying gender of the speaker and
different window sizes compared with the other methods.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, 8 table
