Some people view a conjoining of Christianity and Mathematics as improper. They miss the point of the relationship. The content of mathematics is not affected by Christianity. The relationship does not concern what, or how (the Christian doesn’t solve equations or differentiate differently), but it concerns why. The Effect of the Liberalization of Investment Policies on Employment and Investment of Multinational Corporations in Africa

There has been a remarkable shift in the attitudes towards globalization. Specifically, the discussion among academics and policymakers has shifted from whether globalization should be encouraged to how countries can position themselves to benefit from globalization. This paper focuses on one aspect of globalization – the liberalization of investment policies – and analyzes its impact on employment and investments by multinational corporations in Africa. We use data for 33 countries over the period 1984-2003 and we employ a dynamic panel estimator for our analysis. There are two major findings. First, liberalization has a significant and positive effect on investment. Second, liberalization does not have a direct impact on multinational employment – the effect is indirect: liberalization stimulates multinational investments which in turn increases multinational employment. By increasing investment and employment from multinational firms, these liberalization programs contribute to poverty alleviation.Africa, employment, foreign direct investment, U.S. multinationals.

Using “Panel Reports” to Advance Scholarly Discourse: A Change in Editorial Policy and Guidelines for Panel Report Authors

“Panel reports” reflect a particular category of submissions that authors can make to the Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS). As the CAIS website states, panel reports (i.e., papers that report on panels, debates, symposia, workshops, and similar events) differ from traditional research papers in that they “have to clearly position the matter of discussion at the event, highlight the relevance of event and topic and outline the different views on the topic that emanated at the events” (see https://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/panel_reports.pdf). While this definition has persisted for some time and still holds true, it leaves room for interpretation as to what constitutes a contribution and how one knows that a particular paper has made enough of one. In this editorial, we interpret and elaborate on these principles based on our collective experience with such reports

Politics and AIS: Where Do We Draw the Line?

The Association for Information Systems (AIS) is the preeminent global professional association for academics in the Information Systems (IS) discipline. Throughout its more than 20-year history, AIS governance documents have included no guidance on matters related to national or international politics. However, recent events have challenged AIS to reconsider its responsibility as a political or moral advocate for its members and the discipline it serves. A panel at ECIS 2017 explored the ways in which AIS has inadvertently or intentionally entered the political fray and debated the benefits and drawbacks of taking on a more formal political position. This paper presents the positions that each panelist raised and summarizes the active discussion that followed. It concludes with a set of questions that constitute a “call to action” to the AIS council to enact a politically acceptable set of core values to benefit its members

The FIRST+ Year Information Systems Faculty Experience

The transition from information systems (IS) doctoral student to new faculty member is usually accompanied by a sense of satisfaction. The transition takes place on the heels of a significant investment of time, energy, and financial sacrifice for most students. While landing a new faculty position is generally viewed in itself as a huge achievement, new faculty members face plenty of challenges. The FIRST+ framework we present here details the key elements of transitioning from student to faculty and serves as a basis for sharing experiences among soon-to-be graduates and junior faculty members regarding this transition. This paper presents the FIRST+ framework, a panel discussion on the topic led by this paper’s authors at the 2013 Americas Conference on Information Systems in Chicago, and subsequent analysis of AACSB data on PhD degrees conferred and new faculty hires in IS and other business disciplines. The analysis indicates that PhD graduates in all disciplines encountered a decrease in faculty job placement opportunities in 2009 and 2010, but that IS PhD graduates were especially hard hit. The good news for IS PhD graduates and challenge for faculty selection committees is that a resurgence in the job market has occurred since
