“Fantasia Lusitana”, de João Canijo: O Portugal ficcional vs. o país real. O Estado Novo e a ‘portugalidade’. A construção da identidade

    Get PDF
ISBN: 978-989-96858-3-3In Lisbon, which welcomed refugees from around the world, we lived in the 40s of the twentieth century a fantasy of peace and happiness in opposition to the capitals of Europe affected by the Nazi invasion. In this documentary of Joao Canijo we are struck immediately by the title - "Fantasia Lusitana" - from which we foresee a deviation from reality, and stress the irony, a staging point from which we look at Portugal. The director shows in an overwhelming "Way the images used in the Portuguese World Exhibition of 1940 (the high point of propaganda of the Estado Novo) as a reference, overlapping texts of three famous foreign travelers who passed through Lisbon during World War II (Alfred Dobfin, author of "Berlin Alexanderplatz", Erika Mann, daughter of Thomas Mann, and Antoine de Saint Exupery, author of "The Little Prince"). The mixture of simultaneous triumphal images of paradisiacal Portugal and the lucid and poetic texts read in "voice-off', function as a methodical disassemble with which the film begins (the phrase "everything for the nation by Salazar) and the attempt to create a virtual identity. It shows a nation of fantasists concerned with the supetfluaus and where, paradoxically, the foreigners are the ones who believe the least in this less evident reality. Canijo shows how Portugal of the past continues today and dispels the unreality of the Portuguese identity, inoculated at Estado Novo, and which still lingers today

UID/LIN/03213/2013MORDigital is a newly funded Portuguese lexicographic project that aims to produce high-quality and searchable digital versions of the first three editions (1789; 1813; 1823) of the Diccionario da Lingua Portugueza by António de Morais Silva, preserving and making accessible this important work of European heritage. This paper will describe the current state of the art, the project, its objectives and the methodology proposed, the latter of which is based on a rigorous linguistic analysis and will also include steps necessary for the ontologisation of knowledge contained in and relating to the text. A section will be dedicated to the various investigation domains of the project description. The output of the project will be made available via a dedicated platform.publishersversionpublishe

Os estudos lusófonos como campo de investigação

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The aim of this article is to call attention to the existence of certain dialectal features that prove the existence of a Galicio-Asturian geolinguistic area (including the Portuguese Baixo-Minho) which dates back to the period of Roman colonization. What we effectively do is revive the geo-historico-linguistic notion of a Gallaecia Magna elaborated by Joseph M. Piel as the original geographical birthplace of Portuguese, Galician and Asturian. This area consisted of north-east Portugal, the provinces of Pontevedra, Coruña, Lugo and the western part of Oviedo. Some differences between Galician and Portuguese (that show Galician as more akin to Asturian) must have to do with the affinity of Galician and western Asturias to this area. The features are proof of a long period of contact between Galician and Asturian, and their allegiance to the area, as opposed to the independent, sometimes united, stance of Portuguese and Castilian in the face of these facts

The tesouro do léxico patrimonial galego e portugués. A galician and portuguese word bank

    Get PDF
The international project Tesouro do léxico patrimonial galego e portugués (Thesaurus of the Galician and Portuguese heritage lexicon) aims to be a cross-dialectal lexical portal bringing together lexicographical material from Brazil, Galicia and Portugal in a single computer tool. This dialect portal will give direct access via Internet, free of charge, to a large body of lexicographical data much of which has until now remained unpublished and hard for researchers obtain. The lexical information in the Tesouro is fully lemmatized, semantically classified and geographically referenced, making it possible to obtain usefully grouped search results and generating a map representation corresponding to each data set. Besides its obvious value to dialect researchers and lexicographers, the Tesouro will also provide useful material for the study of names, historical linguistics, etymology, morphology and so on. This tool might also be exploited in ethnographical and historical research since it makes available to the scientific community a large amount of information about the inherited traditions, both material and immaterial, of all three countries, much of which is endangered on account of recent changes in traditional ways of life

The Presence and Influence of English in the Portuguese Financial Media

    Get PDF
As the lingua franca of the 21st century, English has become the main language for intercultural communication for those wanting to embrace globalization. In Portugal, it is the second language of most public and private domains influencing its culture and discourses. Language contact situations transform languages by the incorporations they make from other languages and Portugal has witnessed an increase in the pervasion of English in written communication. The aim of this study is to disclose how this sociolinguistic behavior is perceived by examining the presence of English loanwords in the Portuguese financial media to uncover its role and functions. Three Portuguese newspapers, Diário Económico, Expresso Economia and Vida Económica were chosen as the corpus of analysis over a two-week period in January 2016 corresponding to the pre and post presidential election weeks. This may reveal if the electoral results affect the presence of English. The motivations of journalists for borrowing English items and the reactions of readers complement the analysis. Results have shown English borrowing as an acceptable/accepted behavior in the analyzed Portuguese financial newspapers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Communities of/for Interest:Revisiting the Role of Migrants’ Online Groups

    Get PDF
This article offers a critical examination of the role played by migrants’ online communities. With much of scholarly analysis focusing on the new ways in which online groups enable migrants to connect, interact or socialise together in digital space, little attention has been paid to how these groups are actually formed, by whom and with what motivations. Drawing on qualitative interviews with moderators of online groups created by EU migrants living in Wales, UK, our findings reveal the diverse and sometimes ambivalent roles played by these groups, acting not only as networks of support for migrants (‘communities of interest’) but also driven by commercial motives. To capture the impact of this commercialisation and the complexity in the field, we introduce the notion of ‘communities for interest’. The article thus offers new empirical and conceptual contributions that advance our understanding of migrants’ online communities beyond the much-discussed online/offline and virtual/real dichotomies
