    A Time Hierarchy Theorem for the LOCAL Model

    The celebrated Time Hierarchy Theorem for Turing machines states, informally, that more problems can be solved given more time. The extent to which a time hierarchy-type theorem holds in the distributed LOCAL model has been open for many years. It is consistent with previous results that all natural problems in the LOCAL model can be classified according to a small constant number of complexities, such as O(1),O(logn),O(logn),2O(logn)O(1),O(\log^* n), O(\log n), 2^{O(\sqrt{\log n})}, etc. In this paper we establish the first time hierarchy theorem for the LOCAL model and prove that several gaps exist in the LOCAL time hierarchy. 1. We define an infinite set of simple coloring problems called Hierarchical 2122\frac{1}{2}-Coloring}. A correctly colored graph can be confirmed by simply checking the neighborhood of each vertex, so this problem fits into the class of locally checkable labeling (LCL) problems. However, the complexity of the kk-level Hierarchical 2122\frac{1}{2}-Coloring problem is Θ(n1/k)\Theta(n^{1/k}), for kZ+k\in\mathbb{Z}^+. The upper and lower bounds hold for both general graphs and trees, and for both randomized and deterministic algorithms. 2. Consider any LCL problem on bounded degree trees. We prove an automatic-speedup theorem that states that any randomized no(1)n^{o(1)}-time algorithm solving the LCL can be transformed into a deterministic O(logn)O(\log n)-time algorithm. Together with a previous result, this establishes that on trees, there are no natural deterministic complexities in the ranges ω(logn)\omega(\log^* n)---o(logn)o(\log n) or ω(logn)\omega(\log n)---no(1)n^{o(1)}. 3. We expose a gap in the randomized time hierarchy on general graphs. Any randomized algorithm that solves an LCL problem in sublogarithmic time can be sped up to run in O(TLLL)O(T_{LLL}) time, which is the complexity of the distributed Lovasz local lemma problem, currently known to be Ω(loglogn)\Omega(\log\log n) and O(logn)O(\log n)

    On the Complexity of Local Distributed Graph Problems

    This paper is centered on the complexity of graph problems in the well-studied LOCAL model of distributed computing, introduced by Linial [FOCS '87]. It is widely known that for many of the classic distributed graph problems (including maximal independent set (MIS) and (Δ+1)(\Delta+1)-vertex coloring), the randomized complexity is at most polylogarithmic in the size nn of the network, while the best deterministic complexity is typically 2O(logn)2^{O(\sqrt{\log n})}. Understanding and narrowing down this exponential gap is considered to be one of the central long-standing open questions in the area of distributed graph algorithms. We investigate the problem by introducing a complexity-theoretic framework that allows us to shed some light on the role of randomness in the LOCAL model. We define the SLOCAL model as a sequential version of the LOCAL model. Our framework allows us to prove completeness results with respect to the class of problems which can be solved efficiently in the SLOCAL model, implying that if any of the complete problems can be solved deterministically in logO(1)n\log^{O(1)} n rounds in the LOCAL model, we can deterministically solve all efficient SLOCAL-problems (including MIS and (Δ+1)(\Delta+1)-coloring) in logO(1)n\log^{O(1)} n rounds in the LOCAL model. We show that a rather rudimentary looking graph coloring problem is complete in the above sense: Color the nodes of a graph with colors red and blue such that each node of sufficiently large polylogarithmic degree has at least one neighbor of each color. The problem admits a trivial zero-round randomized solution. The result can be viewed as showing that the only obstacle to getting efficient determinstic algorithms in the LOCAL model is an efficient algorithm to approximately round fractional values into integer values

    Fast Distributed Approximation for Max-Cut

    Finding a maximum cut is a fundamental task in many computational settings. Surprisingly, it has been insufficiently studied in the classic distributed settings, where vertices communicate by synchronously sending messages to their neighbors according to the underlying graph, known as the LOCAL\mathcal{LOCAL} or CONGEST\mathcal{CONGEST} models. We amend this by obtaining almost optimal algorithms for Max-Cut on a wide class of graphs in these models. In particular, for any ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, we develop randomized approximation algorithms achieving a ratio of (1ϵ)(1-\epsilon) to the optimum for Max-Cut on bipartite graphs in the CONGEST\mathcal{CONGEST} model, and on general graphs in the LOCAL\mathcal{LOCAL} model. We further present efficient deterministic algorithms, including a 1/31/3-approximation for Max-Dicut in our models, thus improving the best known (randomized) ratio of 1/41/4. Our algorithms make non-trivial use of the greedy approach of Buchbinder et al. (SIAM Journal on Computing, 2015) for maximizing an unconstrained (non-monotone) submodular function, which may be of independent interest

    Local Conflict Coloring

    Locally finding a solution to symmetry-breaking tasks such as vertex-coloring, edge-coloring, maximal matching, maximal independent set, etc., is a long-standing challenge in distributed network computing. More recently, it has also become a challenge in the framework of centralized local computation. We introduce conflict coloring as a general symmetry-breaking task that includes all the aforementioned tasks as specific instantiations --- conflict coloring includes all locally checkable labeling tasks from [Naor\&Stockmeyer, STOC 1993]. Conflict coloring is characterized by two parameters ll and dd, where the former measures the amount of freedom given to the nodes for selecting their colors, and the latter measures the number of constraints which colors of adjacent nodes are subject to.We show that, in the standard LOCAL model for distributed network computing, if l/d \textgreater{} \Delta, then conflict coloring can be solved in O~(Δ)+logn\tilde O(\sqrt{\Delta})+\log^*n rounds in nn-node graphs with maximum degree Δ\Delta, where O~\tilde O ignores the polylog factors in Δ\Delta. The dependency in~nn is optimal, as a consequence of the Ω(logn)\Omega(\log^*n) lower bound by [Linial, SIAM J. Comp. 1992] for (Δ+1)(\Delta+1)-coloring. An important special case of our result is a significant improvement over the best known algorithm for distributed (Δ+1)(\Delta+1)-coloring due to [Barenboim, PODC 2015], which required O~(Δ3/4)+logn\tilde O(\Delta^{3/4})+\log^*n rounds. Improvements for other variants of coloring, including (Δ+1)(\Delta+1)-list-coloring, (2Δ1)(2\Delta-1)-edge-coloring, TT-coloring, etc., also follow from our general result on conflict coloring. Likewise, in the framework of centralized local computation algorithms (LCAs), our general result yields an LCA which requires a smaller number of probes than the previously best known algorithm for vertex-coloring, and works for a wide range of coloring problems

    Distributed Computing in the Asynchronous LOCAL model

    The LOCAL model is among the main models for studying locality in the framework of distributed network computing. This model is however subject to pertinent criticisms, including the facts that all nodes wake up simultaneously, perform in lock steps, and are failure-free. We show that relaxing these hypotheses to some extent does not hurt local computing. In particular, we show that, for any construction task TT associated to a locally checkable labeling (LCL), if TT is solvable in tt rounds in the LOCAL model, then TT remains solvable in O(t)O(t) rounds in the asynchronous LOCAL model. This improves the result by Casta\~neda et al. [SSS 2016], which was restricted to 3-coloring the rings. More generally, the main contribution of this paper is to show that, perhaps surprisingly, asynchrony and failures in the computations do not restrict the power of the LOCAL model, as long as the communications remain synchronous and failure-free
