Darstellung und Geheimnis in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit

    Get PDF

Translating Early Modern Science (Volume 51)

Translating Early Modern Science explores the roles of translation and the practices of translators in early modern Europe. In a period when multiple European vernaculars challenged the hegemony long held by Latin as the language of learning, translation assumed a heightened significance. This volume illustrates how the act of translating texts and images was an essential component in the circulation and exchange of scientific knowledge. It also makes apparent that translation was hardly ever an end in itself; rather it was also a livelihood, a way of promoting the translator’s own ideas, and a means of establishing the connections that in turn constituted far-reaching scientific networks

Digitalisation encompasses all areas of life and is thus also relevant for theology and the Church. This is not just about the possible uses of social media; in this anthology, digitalisation is understood as a phenomenon that shapes society, the Church and theology with the help of various technologies, such as artificial intelligence. In this context, theology and the Church represent places of digitalisation on the one hand, and, at the same time, the discourse on digitalisation can be advanced with the help of theological thinking on the other. This anthology is both theologically ecumenical and is anchored in an international context. The editors' research focus is on ethics

The aim of this paper is to show that the tradition related to alphabets upon the fingers, which had its origin in both scriptura digitorumand ars memoriae, had new applications in the 17th-Century Linguistics thanks to new approaches within the field: teaching language to the deaf and its use as a secret form of communication, due to the development of cryptography. Taking into account the importance of language of gestures in this context, finger spellings are presented as cryptographic codes by Wilkins (1694 [1641]), Bulwer (1644) and Caramuel (1665 [1657]), who also defended the idea of gestures as universal characters
