State of Alaska Election Security Project Phase 2 Report

    Get PDF
A laska’s election system is among the most secure in the country, and it has a number of safeguards other states are now adopting. But the technology Alaska uses to record and count votes could be improved— and the state’s huge size, limited road system, and scattered communities also create special challenges for insuring the integrity of the vote. In this second phase of an ongoing study of Alaska’s election security, we recommend ways of strengthening the system—not only the technology but also the election procedures. The lieutenant governor and the Division of Elections asked the University of Alaska Anchorage to do this evaluation, which began in September 2007.Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell. A Guide to Distributed Digital Preservation

This volume is devoted to the broad topic of distributed digital preservation, a still-emerging field of practice for the cultural memory arena. Replication and distribution hold out the promise of indefinite preservation of materials without degradation, but establishing effective organizational and technical processes to enable this form of digital preservation is daunting. Institutions need practical examples of how this task can be accomplished in manageable, low-cost ways."--P. [4] of cove

This volume holds the papers from the 18th annual GIS Research UK (GISRUK). This year the conference, hosted at University College London (UCL), from Wednesday 14 to Friday 16 April 2010. The conference covered the areas of core geographic information science research as well as applications domains such as crime and health and technological developments in LBS and the geoweb. UCL’s research mission as a global university is based around a series of Grand Challenges that affect us all, and these were accommodated in GISRUK 2010. The overarching theme this year was “Global Challenges”, with specific focus on the following themes: * Crime and Place * Environmental Change * Intelligent Transport * Public Health and Epidemiology * Simulation and Modelling * London as a global city * The geoweb and neo-geography * Open GIS and Volunteered Geographic Information * Human-Computer Interaction and GIS Traditionally, GISRUK has provided a platform for early career researchers as well as those with a significant track record of achievement in the area. As such, the conference provides a welcome blend of innovative thinking and mature reflection. GISRUK is the premier academic GIS conference in the UK and we are keen to maintain its outstanding record of achievement in developing GIS in the UK and beyond

Cloud-based Communications Planning Collaboration and Interoperability

Communications planning is a key part of the Marine Corps operational planning process. The ability to design and analyze communication network plans efficiently and accurately has a direct impact on the ability of commanders to command and control actions on the battlefield. Portions of the current process of communications network planning for military exercises and operations in the Marine Corps are unnecessarily inefficient and susceptible to human error. At the heart of network planning is the creation of accurate high-level diagrams that depict the details of the planned network topology for use in network installation, maintenance and operation. These diagrams are referenced at all levels in the planning, installation, operation and maintenance of the resultant communications architecture. Development and iterative refinement of these high-level network diagrams is a fragmented manual process. Despite the heavy reliance on network diagrams in the planning process, no software application currently exists that is designed specifically for their creation. This thesis proposes a cloud-based application for communications planning. It describes the benefits achievable through automation, collaboration and application interoperability, and provides recommendations for development of such a system. It concludes by presenting an implementation of these recommendations via a proof of concept application.http://archive.org/details/cloudbasedcommun109457400Captain, United States Marine Corps,Major, United States Marine Corp

Mestrado de dupla diplomação com a Kuban State Agrarian UniversityThis work is about IT infrastructure and, in particular, computer networks in KubSAU and IPB. Also, it is about a network monitoring system “NetGlance NMS” developed for KubSAU System Administration Department. Work objective is to optimize the information structure for KubSAU and IPB. During the work, following tasks were completed: Research the existing IPB information structure, Compare the information structure for KubSAU and IPB, Model the IPB computer network (topology, services), Research bottlenecks and potential pitfalls in the data-center and in the computer network of IPB, Research information security mechanisms in the computer network of IPB, Organize monitoring process for the computer network in KubSAU. The most important impact of the work is an increasing network productivity and user experience as a result of creation and deploy a monitoring software.O trabalho descrito no âmbito desta dissertação incide sobre a infraestrutura TI e, em particular, sobre as redes de computadores da KubSAU e do IPB.

Integrated sensor and management system for urban waste water networks and prevention of critical situations

[EN] This work describes the design and implementation of improvements to the monitoring system of an urban waste water network, resulting in more efficient management of the system. To achieve this objective, the latest communications technology has been incorporated into heterogeneous networks and sensor systems. This technology includes mobile systems, which take measurements and transmit images in real time, an intelligent platform for processing and management of variables, and the implementation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) designed with specific protocols and tools that allow the rapid deployment of the network and allow measurements to be taken in emergency situations. The sensors in this type of installation are extremely important for the management of the system as they allow us to collect information and make decisions with sufficient time to deal effectively with critical situations such as flooding or overloading of the waste water system, or environmental problems such as dumping of possible pollutants, as well as to make the best use of the water cycle. The solution presented here automates large portions of the processes, minimizing the possibility of human error, and increasing the frequency and accuracy of the measurements taken, ensuring a robust communication system covering all the elements involved to provide ubiquity of information, and finally gives an application layer to manage the system and receive alerts. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.This work was supported by the MCyT (Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology) under the projects PET2007-0316 and TIN2010-21378-C02-02, which are partially funded by ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).Sempere Paya, VM.; Santonja Climent, S.
