    By combining automatic environment monitoring with Java smartphones a system has been produced for the real-time monitoring of experiments whilst away from the lab. Changes in the laboratory environment are encapsulated as simple XML messages, which are published using an MQTT compliant broker. Clients subscribe to the MQTT stream, and produce a user display. An MQTT client written for the Java MIDP platform, can be run on a smartphone with a GPRS Internet connection, freeing us from the constraints of the lab. We present an overview of the technologies used, and how these are helping chemists make the best use of their time

    In the past thirty years, the exponential rise in the number of Internet users around the word and the intensive use of the digital networks have brought to light crucial political issues. Internet is now the object of regulations. Namely, it is a policy domain. Yet, its own architecture represents a new regulative structure, one deeply affecting politics and everyday life. This article considers some of the main transformations of the Internet induced by privatization and militarization processes, as well as their consequences on societies and human beings.En los últimos treinta años ha crecido de manera exponencial el número de usuarios de Internet alrededor del mundo y el uso intensivo de conexiones digitales ha traído a la luz cuestiones políticas cruciales. Internet es ahora objeto de regulaciones. Es decir, es un ámbito de la política. Aún su propia arquitectura representa una nueva estructura reguladora, que afecta profundamente la política y la vida cotidiana.     Design of an autonomous software platform for future symbiotic service management

    Nowadays, public as well as private communication infrastructures are all contending for the same limited amount of bandwidth. To optimally share network resources, symbiotic networks have been proposed, which cross logical and physical boundaries to improve the reliability, scalability, and energy efficiency of the network as a whole as well as its constituents. This paper focuses on software services in such symbiotic networks. We propose a platform for the intelligent composition of services provided by symbiotically connected parties, resulting in novel cooperation opportunities. The platform harvests Semantic Web technology to describe services in a highly expressive manner, and constructs service compositions using SeCoA, our tunable best-first search algorithm. The resulting compositions are then enacted via CaPI, a reconfigurable middleware infrastructure. By means of an illustrative scenario, we provide further insight into the platform's functioning
