PoliMedia - Improving Analyses of Radio, TV & Newspaper Coverage of Political Debates
Abstract. Analysing media coverage across several types of media-outlets is a
challenging task for academic researchers. The PoliMedia project aimed to
showcase the potential of cross-media analysis by linking the digitised transcriptions
of the debates at the Dutch Parliament (Dutch Hansard) with three
media-outlets: 1) newspapers in their original layout of the historical newspaper
archive at the National Library, 2) radio bulletins of the Dutch National Press
Agency (ANP) and 3) newscasts and current affairs programs from the Netherlands
Institute for Sound and Vision. In this paper we describe generally how
these links were created and we introduce the PoliMedia search user interface
developed for scholars to navigate the links. In evaluation it was found that the
linking algorithm had a recall of 67% and precision of 75%. Moreover, in an
eye tracking evaluation we found that the interface enabled scholars to perform
known-item and exploratory searches for qualitative analysis
Eye Tracking the Use of a Collapsible Facets Panel in a Search Interface
Abstract. Facets can provide an interesting functionality in digital libraries.
However, while some research shows facets are important, other research found
facets are only moderately used. Therefore, in this exploratory study we compare
two search interfaces; one where the facets panel is always visible and one
where the facets panel is hidden by default. Our main research question is “Is
folding the facets panel in a digital library search interface beneficial to academic
users?” By performing an eye tracking study with N=24, we measured
search efficiency, distribution of attention and user satisfaction. We found no
significant differences in the eye tracking data nor in usability feedback and
conclude that collapsing facets is neither beneficial nor detrimental
Talking With Scholars: Developing a Research Environment for Oral History Collections
Scholars are yet to make optimal use of Oral History collections. For the
uptake of digital research tools in the daily working practice of researchers,
practices and conventions commonly adhered to in the subfields in the
humanities should be taken into account during development. To this end, in the
Oral History Today project a research tool for exploring Oral History
collections is developed in close collaboration with scholarly researchers.
This paper describes four stages of scholarly research and the first steps
undertaken to incorporate requirements of these stages in a digital research
environment.Comment: Demo paper for The 2nd International Workshop on Supporting Users

The role of TV in mobilizing women in politics: A case study is Zanzibar broadcasting Corporation (ZBC.
This research mainly examined the ZBC TV role in mobilizing women towards Participating in politics, case study Urban West Region in Unguja, the studyused five research questions, which are found relevant to the study and were subjected to empirical test. In that context, the researcher selected a total of 105 questionnaires administered and the results generated from the study was analysed using tables and percentages.A qualitative case study design is chosen and various data presented were collected through focus group, in-depth interviews and questionnaires, and some by observations. The researcher used both close and open questionnaires and the total respondents were 120 based on case study within Urban West Region.Presentation and analysis of findings of this study, it focuses on testing the reliability of variables through presenting and analysing primary data collected using descriptive statistics analysis. INFLUENCE OF NEWSPAPER EDITORIALS ON VOTER ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN NIGERIA
The study ‘Influence ofNewspaper Editorials on VoterAttitudetowards the 2015 General Elections in Nigeria’ investigated themes, position and rhetoric of newspaper editorials on 2015 elections and the consequent influence on voterattitude. Content Analysis and the Surveymethods were triangulated in the study. A sample size of 180 editorials and 384 registered voters were selected for the study. Stratified, random, proportionate, and purposive sampling techniques were used in selecting the subjects or respondents for the study.Coding sheet and structured questionnaire were used for data collection. The study found that the key issues which editorials entertained the most and were largely of one accord among the national dailies in Nigeria during the 2015 general election were security; the voter authentication machine (card reader); Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC), negative campaigning. Epideictic, deliberative and forensic types of rhetoric were found to be used in the editorials. It was also found that 93.1% of the respondents anticipated violence during the polls; however, voting behaviour exhibited during accreditation, voting, collation and announcement of results by INEC was largely cordial and peaceful. Pearson Correlation coefficients of .983, .904, .959 and .981 showed high correlation between editorial stand on issues and voter attitude during the 2015 general elections. The study concluded that the selected newspapers: Daily Sun, Daily Trust, Leadership, The Nation and Vanguard demonstrated high sense of social responsibility and commitment to the society by participating in delivering a credible and peaceful election to Nigerians through high volume of incisive editorials. The editorials influenced the calmed behaviour voters had exhibited over the election outcome in 2015. The study recommended that that INEC should scale up the use of media in voter education campaigns and particularly, employ social media platforms such as Facebook, twitter and blogs.Newspapers should also exploitthe new or social media platforms such as blogs, wikis, Facebook, and twitter to enhance more access and reach of editorials
CLARIN. The infrastructure for language resources
CLARIN, the "Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure", has established itself as a major player in the field of research infrastructures for the humanities. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the organization, its members, its goals and its functioning, as well as of the tools and resources hosted by the infrastructure. The many contributors representing various fields, from computer science to law to psychology, analyse a wide range of topics, such as the technology behind the CLARIN infrastructure, the use of CLARIN resources in diverse research projects, the achievements of selected national CLARIN consortia, and the challenges that CLARIN has faced and will face in the future.
The book will be published in 2022, 10 years after the establishment of CLARIN as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium by the European Commission (Decision 2012/136/EU)
