    A Priori Knowledge-Based Post-Doppler STAP for Traffic Monitoring with Airborne Radar

    Die Verkehrsüberwachung gewinnt aufgrund des weltweiten Anstiegs der Verkehrsteilnehmer immer mehr an Bedeutung. Sicherer und effizierter Straßenverkehr erfordert detaillierte Verkehrsinformationen. Häufig sind diese lediglich stationär, räumlich stark begrenzt und meist nur auf Hauptverkehrsstraßen verfügbar. In dieser Hinsicht ist ein Ausfall des Telekommunikationsnetzes, beispielsweise im Falle einer Katastrophe, und der damit einhergehende Informationsverlust als kritisch einzustufen. Flugzeuggetragene Radarsysteme mit synthetischer Apertur (eng. Synthetic Aperture Radar - SAR) können für dieses Szenario eine Lösung darstellen, da sie großflächig hochauflösende Bilder generieren können, unabhängig von Tageslicht und Witterungsbedingungen. Sie ermöglichen aufgrund dieser Charakteristik die Detektion von Bewegtzielen am Boden (eng. ground moving target indication – GMTI). Moderne GMTI-Algorithmen und -Systeme, die prinzipiell für die Verkehrsüberwachung verwendbar sind, wurden in der Literatur bereits diskutiert. Allerdings ist die Robustheit dieser Systeme oft mit hohen Kosten, hoher Hardwarekomplexität und hohem Rechenaufwand verbunden. Diese Dissertation stellt einen neuartigen GMTI-Prozessor vor, der auf dem Radar-Mehrkanalverfahren post-Doppler space-time adaptive processing (PD STAP) basiert. Durch die Überlagerung einer Straßenkarte mit einem digitalen Höhenmodell ist es mithilfe des PD STAP möglich, Falschdetektionen zu erkennen und auszuschließen sowie die detektierten Fahrzeuge ihren korrekten Straßenpositionen zu zuordnen. Die präzisen Schätzungen von Position, Geschwindigkeit und Bewegungsrichtung der Fahrzeuge können mit vergleichsweise geringerer Hardware-Komplexität zu niedrigeren Kosten durchgeführt werden. Ferner wird im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ein effizienter Datenkalibrierungsalgorithmus erläutert, der das Ungleichgewicht zwischen den Empfangskanälen sowie die Variation des Dopplerschwerpunkts über Entfernung und Azimut korrigiert und so das Messergebnis verbessert. Darüber hinaus werden neue und automatisierte Strategien zur Erhebung von Trainingsdaten vorgestellt, die für die Schätzung der Clutter-Kovarianzmatrix wegen ihres direkten Einflusses auf die Clutter-Unterdrückung und Zieldetektion essentiell für PD STAP sind. Der neuartige PD STAP Prozessor verfügt über drei verschiedene Betriebsarten, die für militärische und zivile Anwendungen geeignet sind, darunter ein schneller Verarbeitungsalgorithmus der das Potential für eine zukünftige Echtzeit-Verkehrsüberwachung hat. Alle Betriebsarten wurden erfolgreich mit Radar-Mehrkanaldaten des flugzeuggetragenen F-SAR-Radarsensors des DLR getestet

    Developing Parameter Constraints for Radar-based SWE Retrievals

    Terrestrial snow is an important freshwater reservoir with significant influence on the climate and energy balance. It exhibits natural spatiotemporal variability which has been enhanced by climate change, thus it is important to monitor on a large scale. Active microwave, or radar remote sensing has shown frequency-dependent promise in this regard, however, interpretation remains a challenge. The aim of this thesis was to develop constraints for radar based SWE retrievals which characterize and limit uncertainty with a focus on the underlying physical processes, snowpack stratigraphy, the influence of vegetation, and effects of background scattering. The University of Waterloo Scatterometer (UWScat) was used to make measurements at 9.6 and 17.2 GHz of snow and bare ground in a series of field-based campaigns in Maryhill and Englehart, ON, Grand Mesa, CO (NASA SnowEx campaign, year 1), and Trail Valley Creek, NT. Additional measurements from Tobermory, ON, and Churchill, MB (Canadian Snow and Ice Experiment) were included. The Microwave Emission Model for Layered Snowpacks, Version 3, adapted for backscattering (MEMLS3&a) was used to explore snowpack parameterization and SWE retrieval and the Freeman-Durden three component decomposition (FD3c) was used to leverage the polarimetric response. Physical processes in the snow accumulation environment demonstrated influence on regional snowpack parameterization and constraints in a SWE retrieval context with a single-layer snowpack parameterization for Maryhill, ON and a two-layer snowpack parameterization for Englehart, ON resulting in a retrieval RMSE of 21.9 mm SWE and 24.6 mm SWE, respectively. Use of in situ snow depths improved RMSE to 12.0 mm SWE and 10.9 mm SWE, while accounting for soil scattering effects further improved RMSE by up to 6.3 mm SWE. At sites with vegetation and ice lenses, RMSE improved from 60.4 mm SWE to 21.1 mm SWE when in situ snow depths were used. These results compare favorably with the common accuracy requirement of RMSE ≤ 30 mm and underscore the importance of understanding the driving physical processes in a snow accumulation environment and the utility of their regional manifestation in a SWE retrieval context. A relationship between wind slab thickness and the double-bounce component of the FD3c in a tundra snowpack was introduced for incidence angles ≥ 46° and wind slab thickness ≥ 19 cm. Estimates of wind slab thickness and SWE resulted in an RMSE of 6.0 cm and 5.5 mm, respectively. The increased double-bounce scattering was associated with path length increase within a growing wind slab layer. Signal attenuation in a sub-canopy SWE retrieval was also explored. The volume scattering component of the FD3c yielded similar performance to forest fraction in the retrieval with several distinct advantages including a real-time description of forest condition, accounting for canopy geometry without ancillary information, and providing coincident information on forest canopy in remote locations. Overall, this work demonstrated how physical processes can manifest regional outcomes, it quantified effects of natural inclusions and background scattering on SWE retrievals, it provided a means to constrain wind slab thickness in a tundra environment, and it improved characterization of coniferous forest in a sub-canopy SWE retrieval context. Future work should focus on identifying ice and vegetation conditions prior to SWE retrieval, testing the spatiotemporal validity of the methods developed herein, and finally, improving the integration of snowpack attenuation within retrieval efforts

    Geodetic monitoring of complex shaped infrastructures using Ground-Based InSAR

    In the context of climate change, alternatives to fossil energies need to be used as much as possible to produce electricity. Hydroelectric power generation through the utilisation of dams stands out as an exemplar of highly effective methodologies in this endeavour. Various monitoring sensors can be installed with different characteristics w.r.t. spatial resolution, temporal resolution and accuracy to assess their safe usage. Among the array of techniques available, it is noteworthy that ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) has not yet been widely adopted for this purpose. Despite its remarkable equilibrium between the aforementioned attributes, its sensitivity to atmospheric disruptions, specific acquisition geometry, and the requisite for phase unwrapping collectively contribute to constraining its usage. Several processing strategies are developed in this thesis to capitalise on all the opportunities of GB-SAR systems, such as continuous, flexible and autonomous observation combined with high resolutions and accuracy. The first challenge that needs to be solved is to accurately localise and estimate the azimuth of the GB-SAR to improve the geocoding of the image in the subsequent step. A ray tracing algorithm and tomographic techniques are used to recover these external parameters of the sensors. The introduction of corner reflectors for validation purposes confirms a significant error reduction. However, for the subsequent geocoding, challenges persist in scenarios involving vertical structures due to foreshortening and layover, which notably compromise the geocoding quality of the observed points. These issues arise when multiple points at varying elevations are encapsulated within a singular resolution cell, posing difficulties in pinpointing the precise location of the scattering point responsible for signal return. To surmount these hurdles, a Bayesian approach grounded in intensity models is formulated, offering a tool to enhance the accuracy of the geocoding process. The validation is assessed on a dam in the black forest in Germany, characterised by a very specific structure. The second part of this thesis is focused on the feasibility of using GB-SAR systems for long-term geodetic monitoring of large structures. A first assessment is made by testing large temporal baselines between acquisitions for epoch-wise monitoring. Due to large displacements, the phase unwrapping can not recover all the information. An improvement is made by adapting the geometry of the signal processing with the principal component analysis. The main case study consists of several campaigns from different stations at Enguri Dam in Georgia. The consistency of the estimated displacement map is assessed by comparing it to a numerical model calibrated on the plumblines data. It exhibits a strong agreement between the two results and comforts the usage of GB-SAR for epoch-wise monitoring, as it can measure several thousand points on the dam. It also exhibits the possibility of detecting local anomalies in the numerical model. Finally, the instrument has been installed for continuous monitoring for over two years at Enguri Dam. An adequate flowchart is developed to eliminate the drift happening with classical interferometric algorithms to achieve the accuracy required for geodetic monitoring. The analysis of the obtained time series confirms a very plausible result with classical parametric models of dam deformations. Moreover, the results of this processing strategy are also confronted with the numerical model and demonstrate a high consistency. The final comforting result is the comparison of the GB-SAR time series with the output from four GNSS stations installed on the dam crest. The developed algorithms and methods increase the capabilities of the GB-SAR for dam monitoring in different configurations. It can be a valuable and precious supplement to other classical sensors for long-term geodetic observation purposes as well as short-term monitoring in cases of particular dam operations

    Copernicus Cal/Val Solution - D3.1 Recommendations for R&D activities on Instrumentation Technologies

    The Document identifies the gaps in instrumentation technologies for pre-flight characterisation, onboard calibration and Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRM) used for calibration and validation (Cal/Val) activities for the current Copernicus missions. It also addresses the measurement needs for future Copernicus missions and gives a prioritised list of recommendations for R&D activities on instrumentation technologies. Four types of missions are covered based on the division used in the rest of the CCVS project: optical, altimetry, radar and microwave and atmospheric composition. It also gives an overview of some promising instrumentation technologies in each measurement field for FRM that could fill the gaps for requirements not yet met for the current and future Copernicus missions and identifies the research and development (R&D) activities needed to mature these example technologies. The Document does not provide an exhaustive list of all the new technologies being developed but will give a few examples for each field to show what efforts are being made to fill the gaps. None of the examples is promoted as the best possible solutions. The selection is based on the authors' knowledge during the preparation of the Document. The information included is mainly collected from the deliverables of work packages 1 and 2 in the CCVS project. The new technologies are primarily from the interviews with various measurement networks and campaigns carried out in tasks 2.4 and 2.5. Reference documents can be found in section 1.3

    This open access book focuses on the practical application of electromagnetic polarimetry principles in Earth remote sensing with an educational purpose. In the last decade, the operations from fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar such as the Japanese ALOS/PalSAR, the Canadian Radarsat-2 and the German TerraSAR-X and their easy data access for scientific use have developed further the research and data applications at L,C and X band. As a consequence, the wider distribution of polarimetric data sets across the remote sensing community boosted activity and development in polarimetric SAR applications, also in view of future missions. Numerous experiments with real data from spaceborne platforms are shown, with the aim of giving an up-to-date and complete treatment of the unique benefits of fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data in five different domains: forest, agriculture, cryosphere, urban and oceans

D. University of Missouri--Columbia 2008.Monitoring of ground deformation is a critical component of geotechnical engineering practice. This study investigated the application of synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR), using point target analysis (IPTA) for characterizing localized deformation features that are often associated with geotechnical engineering activities. In contrast to discrete point in-situ deformation measurement techniques, InSAR can be used to obtain a broader view of deformation processes at a site. Satellite data available for the time period of construction of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Red Line was utilized to characterize the technique in terms of dependence of the feasibility in its application on SAR image acquisition parameters. Additionally, a statistical assessment of the sensitivity of deformation rates and the associated standard errors to the size of the dataset analyzed was performed by analyzing randomly generated subsets of data. While the spatial and temporal signatures corresponding to tunneling during the construction of the Red Line were successfully detected, it was found that a minimum of twenty SAR acquisitions were required in order to constrain the deformation history of the study area. From the sensitivity analysis, it was found that the variability of the derived estimates of deformation parameters varied inversely as a function of the size of the dataset used for analysis.Includes bibliographical references
