Low dimensional Surface Parameterisation with application in biometrics
This paper describes initial results from a novel low dimensional surface parameterisation approach based on a modified iterative closest point (ICP) registration process which uses vertex based principal component analysis (PCA) to incorporate a deformable element into registration process. Using this method a 3D surface is represented by a shape space vector of much smaller dimensionality than the dimensionality of the original data space vector. The proposed method is tested on both simulated 3D faces with different facial expressions and real face data. It is shown that the proposed surface representation can be potentially used as feature space for a facial expression recognition system
Computerized Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images to Study Cerebral Anatomy in Developing Neonates
The study of cerebral anatomy in developing neonates is of great importance for
the understanding of brain development during the early period of life. This
dissertation therefore focuses on three challenges in the modelling of cerebral
anatomy in neonates during brain development. The methods that have been
developed all use Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) as source data.
To facilitate study of vascular development in the neonatal period, a set of image
analysis algorithms are developed to automatically extract and model cerebral
vessel trees. The whole process consists of cerebral vessel tracking from
automatically placed seed points, vessel tree generation, and vasculature
registration and matching. These algorithms have been tested on clinical Time-of-
Flight (TOF) MR angiographic datasets.
To facilitate study of the neonatal cortex a complete cerebral cortex segmentation
and reconstruction pipeline has been developed. Segmentation of the neonatal
cortex is not effectively done by existing algorithms designed for the adult brain
because the contrast between grey and white matter is reversed. This causes pixels
containing tissue mixtures to be incorrectly labelled by conventional methods. The
neonatal cortical segmentation method that has been developed is based on a novel
expectation-maximization (EM) method with explicit correction for mislabelled
partial volume voxels. Based on the resulting cortical segmentation, an implicit
surface evolution technique is adopted for the reconstruction of the cortex in
neonates. The performance of the method is investigated by performing a detailed
landmark study.
To facilitate study of cortical development, a cortical surface registration algorithm
for aligning the cortical surface is developed. The method first inflates extracted
cortical surfaces and then performs a non-rigid surface registration using free-form
deformations (FFDs) to remove residual alignment. Validation experiments using
data labelled by an expert observer demonstrate that the method can capture local
changes and follow the growth of specific sulcus
Nonlinear tube-fitting for the analysis of anatomical and functional structures
We are concerned with the estimation of the exterior surface and interior
summaries of tube-shaped anatomical structures. This interest is motivated by
two distinct scientific goals, one dealing with the distribution of HIV
microbicide in the colon and the other with measuring degradation in
white-matter tracts in the brain. Our problem is posed as the estimation of the
support of a distribution in three dimensions from a sample from that
distribution, possibly measured with error. We propose a novel tube-fitting
algorithm to construct such estimators. Further, we conduct a simulation study
to aid in the choice of a key parameter of the algorithm, and we test our
algorithm with validation study tailored to the motivating data sets. Finally,
we apply the tube-fitting algorithm to a colon image produced by single photon
emission computed tomography (SPECT) and to a white-matter tract image produced

COMPARISON OF LOW COST PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SURVEY WITH TLS AND LEICA PEGASUS BACKPACK 3D MODELS
This paper considers Leica backpack and photogrammetric surveys of a mediaeval bastion in Padua, Italy. Furhtermore, terrestrial
laser scanning (TLS) survey is considered in order to provide a state of the art reconstruction of the bastion. Despite control points
are typically used to avoid deformations in photogrammetric surveys and ensure correct scaling of the reconstruction, in this paper
a different approach is considered: this work is part of a project aiming at the development of a system exploiting ultra-wide band
(UWB) devices to provide correct scaling of the reconstruction. In particular, low cost Pozyx UWB devices are used to estimate
camera positions during image acquisitions. Then, in order to obtain a metric reconstruction, scale factor in the photogrammetric
survey is estimated by comparing camera positions obtained from UWB measurements with those obtained from photogrammetric
reconstruction. Compared with the TLS survey, the considered photogrammetric model of the bastion results in a RMSE of 21.9cm, average error 13.4cm, and standard deviation 13.5cm. Excluding the final part of the bastion left wing, where the presence of several poles make reconstruction more difficult, (RMSE) fitting error is 17.3cm, average error 11.5cm, and standard deviation 9.5cm. Instead, comparison of Leica backpack and TLS surveys leads to an average error of 4.7cm and standard deviation 0.6cm (4.2 cm and 0.3 cm, respectively, by excluding the final part of the left wing)
Motion from "X" by Compensating "Y"
This paper analyzes the geometry of the visual motion estimation problem in relation to transformations of the input (images) that stabilize particular output functions such as the motion of a point, a line and a plane in the image. By casting the problem within the popular "epipolar geometry", we provide a common framework for including constraints such as point, line of plane fixation by just considering "slices" of the parameter manifold. The models we provide can be used for estimating motion from a batch using the preferred optimization techniques, or for defining dynamic filters that estimate motion from a causal sequence. We discuss methods for performing the necessary compensation by either controlling the support of the camera or by pre-processing the images. The compensation algorithms may be used also for recursively fitting a plane in 3-D both from point-features or directly from brightness. Conversely, they may be used for estimating motion relative to the plane independent of its parameters
Heterogeneous volumetric data mapping and its medical applications
With the advance of data acquisition techniques, massive solid geometries are being collected routinely in scientific tasks, these complex and unstructured data need to be effectively correlated for various processing and analysis. Volumetric mapping solves bijective low-distortion correspondence between/among 3D geometric data, and can serve as an important preprocessing step in many tasks in compute-aided design and analysis, industrial manufacturing, medical image analysis, to name a few. This dissertation studied two important volumetric mapping problems: the mapping of heterogeneous volumes (with nonuniform inner structures/layers) and the mapping of sequential dynamic volumes. To effectively handle heterogeneous volumes, first, we studied the feature-aligned harmonic volumetric mapping. Compared to previous harmonic mapping, it supports the point, curve, and iso-surface alignment, which are important low-dimensional structures in heterogeneous volumetric data. Second, we proposed a biharmonic model for volumetric mapping. Unlike the conventional harmonic volumetric mapping that only supports positional continuity on the boundary, this new model allows us to have higher order continuity along the boundary surface. This suggests a potential model to solve the volumetric mapping of complex and big geometries through divide-and-conquer. We also studied the medical applications of our volumetric mapping in lung tumor respiratory motion modeling. We were building an effective digital platform for lung tumor radiotherapy based on effective volumetric CT/MRI image matching and analysis. We developed and integrated in this platform a set of geometric/image processing techniques including advanced image segmentation, finite element meshing, volumetric registration and interpolation. The lung organ/tumor and surrounding tissues are treated as a heterogeneous region and a dynamic 4D registration framework is developed for lung tumor motion modeling and tracking. Compared to the previous 3D pairwise registration, our new 4D parameterization model leads to a significantly improved registration accuracy.
