    Reliable Solid Modelling Using Subdivision Surfaces

    Les surfaces de subdivision fournissent une méthode alternative prometteuse dans la modélisation géométrique, et ont des avantages sur la représentation classique de trimmed-NURBS, en particulier dans la modélisation de surfaces lisses par morceaux. Dans ce mémoire, nous considérons le problème des opérations géométriques sur les surfaces de subdivision, avec l'exigence stricte de forme topologique correcte. Puisque ce problème peut être mal conditionné, nous proposons une approche pour la gestion de l'incertitude qui existe dans le calcul géométrique. Nous exigeons l'exactitude des informations topologiques lorsque l'on considère la nature de robustesse du problème des opérations géométriques sur les modèles de solides, et il devient clair que le problème peut être mal conditionné en présence de l'incertitude qui est omniprésente dans les données. Nous proposons donc une approche interactive de gestion de l'incertitude des opérations géométriques, dans le cadre d'un calcul basé sur la norme IEEE arithmétique et la modélisation en surfaces de subdivision. Un algorithme pour le problème planar-cut est alors présenté qui a comme but de satisfaire à l'exigence topologique mentionnée ci-dessus.Subdivision surfaces are a promising alternative method for geometric modelling, and have some important advantages over the classical representation of trimmed-NURBS, especially in modelling piecewise smooth surfaces. In this thesis, we consider the problem of geometric operations on subdivision surfaces with the strict requirement of correct topological form, and since this problem may be ill-conditioned, we propose an approach for managing uncertainty that exists inherently in geometric computation. We take into account the requirement of the correctness of topological information when considering the nature of robustness for the problem of geometric operations on solid models, and it becomes clear that the problem may be ill-conditioned in the presence of uncertainty that is ubiquitous in the data. Starting from this point, we propose an interactive approach of managing uncertainty of geometric operations, in the context of computation using the standard IEEE arithmetic and modelling using a subdivision-surface representation. An algorithm for the planar-cut problem is then presented, which has as its goal the satisfaction of the topological requirement mentioned above

    Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines and Rational Bezier Triangles for Isogeometric Analysis of Structural Applications

    Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is a major advancement in computational analysis that bridges the gap between a computer-aided design (CAD) model, which is typically constructed using Non-Uniform Rational B-splines (NURBS), and a computational model that traditionally uses Lagrange polynomials to represent the geometry and solution variables. In IGA, the same shape functions that are used in CAD are employed for analysis. The direct manipulation of CAD data eliminates approximation errors that emanate from the process of converting the geometry from CAD to Finite Element Analysis (FEA). As a result, IGA allows the exact geometry to be represented at the coarsest level and maintained throughout the analysis process. While IGA was initially introduced to streamline the design and analysis process, this dissertation shows that IGA can also provide improved computational results for complex and highly nonlinear problems in structural mechanics. This dissertation addresses various problems in structural mechanics in the context of IGA, with the use of NURBS and rational Bézier triangles for the description of the parametric and physical spaces. The approaches considered here show that a number of important properties (e.g., high-order smoothness, geometric exactness, reduced number of degrees of freedom, and increased flexibility in discretization) can be achieved, leading to improved numerical solutions. Specifically, using B-splines and a layer-based discretization, a distributed plasticity isogeometric frame model is formulated to capture the spread of plasticity in large-deformation frames. The modeling approach includes an adaptive analysis where the structure of interest is initially modeled with coarse mesh and knots are inserted based on the yielding information at the quadrature points. It is demonstrated that improvement on efficiency and convergence rates is attained. With NURBS, an isogeometric rotation-free multi-layered plate formulation is developed based on a layerwise deformation theory. The derivation assumes a separate displacement field expansion within each layer, and considers transverse displacement component as C0-continuous at dissimilar material interfaces, which is enforced via knot repetition. The separate integration of the in-plane and through-thickness directions allows to capture the complete 3D stresses in a 2D setting. The proposed method is used to predict the behavior of advanced materials such as laminated composites, and the results show advantages in efficiency and accuracy. To increase the flexibility in discretizing complex geometries, rational Bézier triangles for domain triangulation is studied. They are further coupled with a Delaunay-based feature-preserving discretization algorithm for static bending and free vibration analysis of Kirchhoff plates. Lagrange multipliers are employed to explicitly impose high-order continuity constraints and the augmented system is solved iteratively without increasing the matrix size. The resulting discretization is geometrically exact, admits small geometric features, and constitutes C1-continuity. The feature-preserving rational Bézier triangles are further applied to smeared damage modeling of quasi-brittle materials. Due to the ability of Lagrange multipliers to raise global continuity to any desired order, the implicit fourth- and sixth-order gradient damage models are analyzed. The inclusion of higher-order terms in the nonlocal Taylor expansion improves solution accuracy. A local refinement algorithm that resolves marked regions with high resolution while keeping the resulting mesh conforming and well-conditioned is also utilized to improve efficiency. The outcome is a unified modeling framework where the feature-preserving discretization is able to capture the damage initiation and early-stage propagation, and the local refinement technique can then be applied to adaptively refine the mesh in the direction of damage propagation.PHDCivil EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Flexible G1 Interpolation of Quad Meshes

    International audienceTransforming an arbitrary mesh into a smooth G1 surface has been the subject of intensive research works. To get a visual pleasing shape without any imperfection even in the presence of extraordinary mesh vertices is still a challenging problem in particular when interpolation of the mesh vertices is required. We present a new local method, which produces visually smooth shapes while solving the interpolation problem. It consists of combining low degree biquartic Bézier patches with minimum number of pieces per mesh face, assembled together with G1-continuity. All surface control points are given explicitly. The construction is local and free of zero-twists. We further show that within this economical class of surfaces it is however possible to derive a sufficient number of meaningful degrees of freedom so that standard optimization techniques result in high quality surfaces

    Efficient and High-Quality Rendering of Higher-Order Geometric Data Representations

    Computer-Aided Design (CAD) bezeichnet den Entwurf industrieller Produkte mit Hilfe von virtuellen 3D Modellen. Ein CAD-Modell besteht aus parametrischen Kurven und Flächen, in den meisten Fällen non-uniform rational B-Splines (NURBS). Diese mathematische Beschreibung wird ebenfalls zur Analyse, Optimierung und Präsentation des Modells verwendet. In jeder dieser Entwicklungsphasen wird eine unterschiedliche visuelle Darstellung benötigt, um den entsprechenden Nutzern ein geeignetes Feedback zu geben. Designer bevorzugen beispielsweise illustrative oder realistische Darstellungen, Ingenieure benötigen eine verständliche Visualisierung der Simulationsergebnisse, während eine immersive 3D Darstellung bei einer Benutzbarkeitsanalyse oder der Designauswahl hilfreich sein kann. Die interaktive Darstellung von NURBS-Modellen und -Simulationsdaten ist jedoch aufgrund des hohen Rechenaufwandes und der eingeschränkten Hardwareunterstützung eine große Herausforderung. Diese Arbeit stellt vier neuartige Verfahren vor, welche sich mit der interaktiven Darstellung von NURBS-Modellen und Simulationensdaten befassen. Die vorgestellten Algorithmen nutzen neue Fähigkeiten aktueller Grafikkarten aus, um den Stand der Technik bezüglich Qualität, Effizienz und Darstellungsgeschwindigkeit zu verbessern. Zwei dieser Verfahren befassen sich mit der direkten Darstellung der parametrischen Beschreibung ohne Approximationen oder zeitaufwändige Vorberechnungen. Die dabei vorgestellten Datenstrukturen und Algorithmen ermöglichen die effiziente Unterteilung, Klassifizierung, Tessellierung und Darstellung getrimmter NURBS-Flächen und einen interaktiven Ray-Casting-Algorithmus für die Isoflächenvisualisierung von NURBSbasierten isogeometrischen Analysen. Die weiteren zwei Verfahren beschreiben zum einen das vielseitige Konzept der programmierbaren Transparenz für illustrative und verständliche Visualisierungen tiefenkomplexer CAD-Modelle und zum anderen eine neue hybride Methode zur Reprojektion halbtransparenter und undurchsichtiger Bildinformation für die Beschleunigung der Erzeugung von stereoskopischen Bildpaaren. Die beiden letztgenannten Ansätze basieren auf rasterisierter Geometrie und sind somit ebenfalls für normale Dreiecksmodelle anwendbar, wodurch die Arbeiten auch einen wichtigen Beitrag in den Bereichen der Computergrafik und der virtuellen Realität darstellen. Die Auswertung der Arbeit wurde mit großen, realen NURBS-Datensätzen durchgeführt. Die Resultate zeigen, dass die direkte Darstellung auf Grundlage der parametrischen Beschreibung mit interaktiven Bildwiederholraten und in subpixelgenauer Qualität möglich ist. Die Einführung programmierbarer Transparenz ermöglicht zudem die Umsetzung kollaborativer 3D Interaktionstechniken für die Exploration der Modelle in virtuellenUmgebungen sowie illustrative und verständliche Visualisierungen tiefenkomplexer CAD-Modelle. Die Erzeugung stereoskopischer Bildpaare für die interaktive Visualisierung auf 3D Displays konnte beschleunigt werden. Diese messbare Verbesserung wurde zudem im Rahmen einer Nutzerstudie als wahrnehmbar und vorteilhaft befunden.In computer-aided design (CAD), industrial products are designed using a virtual 3D model. A CAD model typically consists of curves and surfaces in a parametric representation, in most cases, non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS). The same representation is also used for the analysis, optimization and presentation of the model. In each phase of this process, different visualizations are required to provide an appropriate user feedback. Designers work with illustrative and realistic renderings, engineers need a comprehensible visualization of the simulation results, and usability studies or product presentations benefit from using a 3D display. However, the interactive visualization of NURBS models and corresponding physical simulations is a challenging task because of the computational complexity and the limited graphics hardware support. This thesis proposes four novel rendering approaches that improve the interactive visualization of CAD models and their analysis. The presented algorithms exploit latest graphics hardware capabilities to advance the state-of-the-art in terms of quality, efficiency and performance. In particular, two approaches describe the direct rendering of the parametric representation without precomputed approximations and timeconsuming pre-processing steps. New data structures and algorithms are presented for the efficient partition, classification, tessellation, and rendering of trimmed NURBS surfaces as well as the first direct isosurface ray-casting approach for NURBS-based isogeometric analysis. The other two approaches introduce the versatile concept of programmable order-independent semi-transparency for the illustrative and comprehensible visualization of depth-complex CAD models, and a novel method for the hybrid reprojection of opaque and semi-transparent image information to accelerate stereoscopic rendering. Both approaches are also applicable to standard polygonal geometry which contributes to the computer graphics and virtual reality research communities. The evaluation is based on real-world NURBS-based models and simulation data. The results show that rendering can be performed directly on the underlying parametric representation with interactive frame rates and subpixel-precise image results. The computational costs of additional visualization effects, such as semi-transparency and stereoscopic rendering, are reduced to maintain interactive frame rates. The benefit of this performance gain was confirmed by quantitative measurements and a pilot user study

    An isogeometric coupled boundary element method and finite element method for structural-acoustic analysis through loop subdivision surfaces

    This present thesis proposes a novel approach for coupling finite element and boundary element formulations using a Loop subdivision surface discretisation to allow efficient acoustic scattering analysis over shell structures. The analysis of underwater structures has always been a challenge for engineers because it couples shell structural dynamics and acoustic scattering. In the present work, a finite element implementation of the Kirchhoff-Love formulation is used for shell structural dynamic analysis and the boundary element method is adopted to solve the Helmholtz equation for acoustic scattering analysis. The boundary element formulation is chosen as it can handle infinite domains without volumetric meshes. In the conventional engineering workflow, generating meshes of complex geometries to represent the underwater structures, e.g. submarines or torpedoes, is very time consuming and costly even if it is only a data conversion process. Isogeometric analysis (IGA) is a recently developed concept which aims to integrate computer aided design (CAD) and numerical analysis by using the same geometry model. Non-uniform rational B-splines~(NURBS), the most commonly used CAD technique, were considered in early IGA developments. However, NURBS have limitations when used in analysis because of their tensor-product nature. Subdivision surfaces discretisation is an alternative to overcome NURBS limitation. The new method adopts a triangular Loop subdivision surface discretisation for both geometry and analysis. The high order subdivision basis functions have C1C^1 continuity, which satisfies the requirements of the Kirchhoff-Love formulation and are highly efficient for the acoustic field computations. The control meshes for the shell analysis and the acoustic analysis have the same resolution, which provides a fully integrated isogeometric approach for coupled structural-acoustic analysis of shells. The method is verified by the example of an acoustic plane wave which scatters over an elastic spherical shell. The ability of the presented method to handle complex geometries is also demonstrated
