Image quality assessment based on the perceived structural similarity index of an image
Image quality assessment (IQA) has a very important role and wide applications in image acquisition, storage, transmission and processing. In designing IQA models, human visual system (HVS) characteristics introduced play an important role in improving their performances. In this paper, combining image distortion characteristics with HVS characteristics, based on the structure similarity index (SSIM) model, a novel IQA model based on the perceived structure similarity index (PSIM) of image is proposed. In the method, first, a perception model for HVS perceiving real images is proposed, combining the contrast sensitivity, frequency sensitivity, luminance nonlinearity and masking characteristics of HVS; then, in order to simulate HVS perceiving real image, the real images are processed with the proposed perception model, to eliminate their visual redundancy, thus, the perceived images are obtained; finally, based on the idea and modeling method of SSIM, combining with the features of perceived image, a novel IQA model, namely PSIM, is proposed. Further, in order to illustrate the performance of PSIM, 5335 distorted images with 41 distortion types in four image databases (TID2013, CSIQ, LIVE and CID) are used to simulate from three aspects: overall IQA of each database, IQA for each distortion type of images, and IQA for special distortion types of images. Further, according to the comprehensive benefit of precision, generalization performance and complexity, their IQA results are compared with those of 12 existing IQA models. The experimental results show that the accuracy (PLCC) of PSIM is 9.91% higher than that of SSIM in four databases, on average; and its performance is better than that of 12 existing IQA models. Synthesizing experimental results and theoretical analysis, it is showed that the proposed PSIM model is an effective and excellent IQA model
Learning Outcomes of Classroom Research
Personal pronouns are a linguistic device that is used to engage students at various educational levels. Personal pronouns are multifunctional, and their functions range from inclusion to exclusion, and include establishing of rapport with students. In this chapter, we compare the use of personal pronouns at university and secondary school levels. Our previous study (Yeo & Ting, 2014) showed the frequent use of you in lecture introductions (2,170 instances in the 37,373-word corpus) to acknowledge the presence of students. The arts lecturers were more inclusive than the science lecturers, reflected in the less frequent use of exclusive-we and we for one, as well as the frequent use of you-generalised. We have also compiled and analysed a 43,511-word corpus from 15 English lessons in three Malaysian secondary schools. This corpus yielded 2,019 instances of personal pronoun use. The results showed that you was the most frequently used personal pronoun, followed by we and I. You-audience was used more than you-generalised, and the main function was to give instructions to students. The teachers appeared to be more directive than the lecturers in the previous study, who sometimes used the inclusive-we for you and I and we for I to lessen the social distance with students, indicating that the discourse functions of personal pronouns vary with the educational context. The findings suggest that educators can be alerted to the versatility of personal pronouns, for example, for engaging students in the lesson and for asserting authority in the subject matter.

Contextually and identity aware 5G services
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonThe fifth generation (5G) mobile networks aim to be ten times faster than the existing 4G connection, whilst providing low latency, and flexibility. Hence, various alterations are planned to the existing network infrastructure to be able to reach the 5G expected performance levels. The main technologies that were used, to ensure high performance, flexible network, and efficient resource allocation, are Software Defined Network and Network Function Virtualization. As these technologies are replacing the device-based architecture with, a service-based architecture.
This thesis provides a design of location database interactive web interface and interactive mobile application. The implementation of real time video streaming location server, the streaming system's performance parameters demonstrated a high level of QoS (0.07ms jitter and 9.53ms delay). In regard to experimental examination, it measured the localisation coverage, accuracy measurements and a highly scalable security solution. The localisation coverage and accuracy measurements were achieved through the mmWave and VLC link transmitters. The proposed simulated annealing algorithm aimed at data optimisation for location measurements accuracy showed results of the average location error of x and y which showed significant improvement from x= 22.5 and y=21.6 to x=11.09 and y= 11.63.
The proposed indoor location security solution showed significant results, as it provides a high scalability solution using the VNF. The solution showed that it was not 100% effective, as some of the fake discover packets still reached the DHCP server. This was due to the high load of traffic passing through the network. Nonetheless, 90% of the fake DHCP discover packets never reached the DHCP server because the scripts began blocking all fake discover packets after realising it was an attack. This conveys that the proposed system was able to run successfully without crashing or overloading the controller.
Overall, the main challenges facing 5G have been addressed with their proposed solutions, which showed promising results.
