HD Physiology Project-Japanese efforts to promote multilevel integrative systems biology and physiome research.
The HD Physiology Project is a Japanese research consortium that aimed to develop methods and a computational platform in which physiological and pathological information can be described in high-level definitions across multiple scales of time and size. During the 5 years of this project, an appropriate software platform for multilevel functional simulation was developed and a whole-heart model including pharmacokinetics for the assessment of the proarrhythmic risk of drugs was developed. In this article, we outline the description and scientific strategy of this project and present the achievements and influence on multilevel integrative systems biology and physiome research
NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program, 1990, Volume 1
The 1990 Johnson Space Center (JSC) NASA/American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Summer Faculty Fellowship Program was conducted by the University of Houston-University Park and JSC. A compilation of the final reports on the research projects are presented. Large-scale lattice Boltzmann simulations of complex fluids: advances through the advent of computational grids
During the last two years the RealityGrid project has allowed us to be one of
the few scientific groups involved in the development of computational grids.
Since smoothly working production grids are not yet available, we have been
able to substantially influence the direction of software development and grid
deployment within the project. In this paper we review our results from large
scale three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann simulations performed over the last
two years. We describe how the proactive use of computational steering and
advanced job migration and visualization techniques enabled us to do our
scientific work more efficiently. The projects reported on in this paper are
studies of complex fluid flows under shear or in porous media, as well as
large-scale parameter searches, and studies of the self-organisation of liquid
cubic mesophases.

Macroscopic modeling and simulations of room evacuation
We analyze numerically two macroscopic models of crowd dynamics: the
classical Hughes model and the second order model being an extension to
pedestrian motion of the Payne-Whitham vehicular traffic model. The desired
direction of motion is determined by solving an eikonal equation with density
dependent running cost, which results in minimization of the travel time and
avoidance of congested areas. We apply a mixed finite volume-finite element
method to solve the problems and present error analysis for the eikonal solver,
gradient computation and the second order model yielding a first order
convergence. We show that Hughes' model is incapable of reproducing complex
crowd dynamics such as stop-and-go waves and clogging at bottlenecks. Finally,
using the second order model, we study numerically the evacuation of
pedestrians from a room through a narrow exit.Comment: 22 page
A collaborative platform for integrating and optimising Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis requests
A Virtual Integration Platform (VIP) is described which provides support for the integration of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools into an environment that supports the use of these tools in a distributed collaborative manner. The VIP has evolved through previous EU research conducted within the VRShips-ROPAX 2000 (VRShips) project and the current version discussed here was developed predominantly within the VIRTUE project but also within the SAFEDOR project. The VIP is described with respect to the support it provides to designers and analysts in coordinating and optimising CFD analysis requests. Two case studies are provided that illustrate the application of the VIP within HSVA: the use of a panel code for the evaluation of geometry variations in order to improve propeller efficiency; and, the use of a dedicated maritime RANS code (FreSCo) to improve the wake distribution for the VIRTUE tanker. A discussion is included detailing the background, application and results from the use of the VIP within these two case studies as well as how the platform was of benefit during the development and a consideration of how it can benefit HSVA in the future
Towards the Evolution of Novel Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines
Renewable and sustainable energy is one of the most important challenges
currently facing mankind. Wind has made an increasing contribution to the
world's energy supply mix, but still remains a long way from reaching its full
potential. In this paper, we investigate the use of artificial evolution to
design vertical-axis wind turbine prototypes that are physically instantiated
and evaluated under approximated wind tunnel conditions. An artificial neural
network is used as a surrogate model to assist learning and found to reduce the
number of fabrications required to reach a higher aerodynamic efficiency,
resulting in an important cost reduction. Unlike in other approaches, such as
computational fluid dynamics simulations, no mathematical formulations are used
