Design of a multiple bloom filter for distributed navigation routing
Unmanned navigation of vehicles and mobile robots can be greatly simplified by providing environmental intelligence with dispersed wireless sensors. The wireless sensors can work as active landmarks for vehicle localization and routing. However, wireless sensors are often resource scarce and require a resource-saving design. In this paper, a multiple Bloom-filter scheme is proposed to compress a global routing table for a wireless sensor. It is used as a lookup table for routing a vehicle to any destination but requires significantly less memory space and search effort. An error-expectation-based design for a multiple Bloom filter is proposed as an improvement to the conventional false-positive-rate-based design. The new design is shown to provide an equal relative error expectation for all branched paths, which ensures a better network load balance and uses less memory space. The scheme is implemented in a project for wheelchair navigation using wireless camera motes. © 2013 IEEE
Physiology-Aware Rural Ambulance Routing
In emergency patient transport from rural medical facility to center tertiary
hospital, real-time monitoring of the patient in the ambulance by a physician
expert at the tertiary center is crucial. While telemetry healthcare services
using mobile networks may enable remote real-time monitoring of transported
patients, physiologic measures and tracking are at least as important and
requires the existence of high-fidelity communication coverage. However, the
wireless networks along the roads especially in rural areas can range from 4G
to low-speed 2G, some parts with communication breakage. From a patient care
perspective, transport during critical illness can make route selection patient
state dependent. Prompt decisions with the relative advantage of a longer more
secure bandwidth route versus a shorter, more rapid transport route but with
less secure bandwidth must be made. The trade-off between route selection and
the quality of wireless communication is an important optimization problem
which unfortunately has remained unaddressed by prior work.
In this paper, we propose a novel physiology-aware route scheduling approach
for emergency ambulance transport of rural patients with acute, high risk
diseases in need of continuous remote monitoring. We mathematically model the
problem into an NP-hard graph theory problem, and approximate a solution based
on a trade-off between communication coverage and shortest path. We profile
communication along two major routes in a large rural hospital settings in
Illinois, and use the traces to manifest the concept. Further, we design our
algorithms and run preliminary experiments for scalability analysis. We believe
that our scheduling techniques can become a compelling aid that enables an
always-connected remote monitoring system in emergency patient transfer
scenarios aimed to prevent morbidity and mortality with early diagnosis

Mechanism design for spatio-temporal request satisfaction in mobile networks
Mobile agents participating in geo-presence-capable crowdsourcing applications should be presumed rational, competitive, and willing to deviate from their routes if given the right incentive. In this paper, we design a mechanism that takes into consideration this rationality for request satisfaction in such applications. We propose the Geo-temporal Request Satisfaction (GRS) problem to be that of finding the optimal assignment of requests with specific spatio-temporal characteristics to competitive mobile agents subject to spatio-temporal constraints. The objective of the GRS problem is to maximize the total profit of the system subject to our rationality assumptions. MAP: Medial Axis Based Geometric Routing in Sensor Networks
One of the challenging tasks in the deployment of dense wireless networks (like sensor networks) is in devising a routing scheme for node to node communication. Important consideration includes scalability, routing complexity, the length of the communication paths and the load sharing of the routes. In this paper, we show that a compact and expressive abstraction of network connectivity by the medial axis enables efficient and localized routing. We propose MAP, a Medial Axis based naming and routing Protocol that does not require locations, makes routing decisions locally, and achieves good load balancing. In its preprocessing phase, MAP constructs the medial axis of the sensor field, defined as the set of nodes with at least two closest boundary nodes. The medial axis of the network captures both the complex geometry and non-trivial topology of the sensor field. It can be represented compactly by a graph whose size is comparable with the complexity of the geometric features (e.g., the number of holes). Each node is then given a name related to its position with respect to the medial axis. The routing scheme is derived through local decisions based on the names of the source and destination nodes and guarantees delivery with reasonable and natural routes. We show by both theoretical analysis and simulations that our medial axis based geometric routing scheme is scalable, produces short routes, achieves excellent load balancing, and is very robust to variations in the network model
Cloud Enabled Emergency Navigation Using Faster-than-real-time Simulation
State-of-the-art emergency navigation approaches are designed to evacuate
civilians during a disaster based on real-time decisions using a pre-defined
algorithm and live sensory data. Hence, casualties caused by the poor decisions
and guidance are only apparent at the end of the evacuation process and cannot
then be remedied. Previous research shows that the performance of routing
algorithms for evacuation purposes are sensitive to the initial distribution of
evacuees, the occupancy levels, the type of disaster and its as well its
locations. Thus an algorithm that performs well in one scenario may achieve bad
results in another scenario. This problem is especially serious in
heuristic-based routing algorithms for evacuees where results are affected by
the choice of certain parameters. Therefore, this paper proposes a
simulation-based evacuee routing algorithm that optimises evacuation by making
use of the high computational power of cloud servers. Rather than guiding
evacuees with a predetermined routing algorithm, a robust Cognitive Packet
Network based algorithm is first evaluated via a cloud-based simulator in a
faster-than-real-time manner, and any "simulated casualties" are then re-routed
using a variant of Dijkstra's algorithm to obtain new safe paths for them to
exits. This approach can be iterated as long as corrective action is still

A bounded heuristic for collection-based routing in wireless sensor networks
Wireless sensor networks are used to monitor and control physical phenomena and to provide interaction between clients and the physical environment. Clients have been typically users or user applications, but next generation wireless sensor networks will also work in machine-to-machine scenarios where some nodes can be interested in some other nodes' data. These scenarios may run the risk of becoming overloaded with messaging, a pernicious fact in particular for constrained networks where both bandwidth and power supply are limited. Resource collections can be used in wireless sensor networks to improve bandwidth usage and to reduce energy consumption, reducing the overall number of notification packets and wrapping overhead, required for the delivery of sensor data. This article proposes a heuristic algorithm for the planning of both routing and collections, in wireless sensor networks. Results show that collections are always worthwhile, and that the heuristic is able to find feasible and cost effective solutions, approaching its lower bound.FCT from Portugal within the CEOT research center [UID/MULTI/00631/2013
