    Multi-Domain Real-Time Planning in Dynamic Environments

    This paper presents a real-time planning framework for multicharacter navigation that enables the use of multiple heterogeneous problem domains of differing complexities for navigation in large, complex, dynamic virtual environments. The original navigation problem is decomposed into a set of smaller problems that are distributed across planning tasks working in these different domains. An anytime dynamic planner is used to efficiently compute and repair plans for each of these tasks, while using plans in one domain to focus and accelerate searches in more complex domains. We demonstrate the benefits of our framework by solving many challenging multi-agent scenarios in complex dynamic environments requiring space-time precision and explicit coordination between interacting agents, by accounting for dynamic information at all stages of the decision-making process

    Can bounded and self-interested agents be teammates? Application to planning in ad hoc teams

    Planning for ad hoc teamwork is challenging because it involves agents collaborating without any prior coordination or communication. The focus is on principled methods for a single agent to cooperate with others. This motivates investigating the ad hoc teamwork problem in the context of self-interested decision-making frameworks. Agents engaged in individual decision making in multiagent settings face the task of having to reason about other agents’ actions, which may in turn involve reasoning about others. An established approximation that operationalizes this approach is to bound the infinite nesting from below by introducing level 0 models. For the purposes of this study, individual, self-interested decision making in multiagent settings is modeled using interactive dynamic influence diagrams (I-DID). These are graphical models with the benefit that they naturally offer a factored representation of the problem, allowing agents to ascribe dynamic models to others and reason about them. We demonstrate that an implication of bounded, finitely-nested reasoning by a self-interested agent is that we may not obtain optimal team solutions in cooperative settings, if it is part of a team. We address this limitation by including models at level 0 whose solutions involve reinforcement learning. We show how the learning is integrated into planning in the context of I-DIDs. This facilitates optimal teammate behavior, and we demonstrate its applicability to ad hoc teamwork on several problem domains and configurations

    Learning Dynamic Graphs from All Contextual Information for Accurate Point-of-Interest Visit Forecasting

    Forecasting the number of visits to Points-of-Interest (POI) in an urban area is critical for planning and decision-making for various application domains, from urban planning and transportation management to public health and social studies. Although this forecasting problem can be formulated as a multivariate time-series forecasting task, the current approaches cannot fully exploit the ever-changing multi-context correlations among POIs. Therefore, we propose Busyness Graph Neural Network (BysGNN), a temporal graph neural network designed to learn and uncover the underlying multi-context correlations between POIs for accurate visit forecasting. Unlike other approaches where only time-series data is used to learn a dynamic graph, BysGNN utilizes all contextual information and time-series data to learn an accurate dynamic graph representation. By incorporating all contextual, temporal, and spatial signals, we observe a significant improvement in our forecasting accuracy over state-of-the-art forecasting models in our experiments with real-world datasets across the United States

    Optimizations for Decision Making and Planning in Description Logic Dynamic Knowledge Bases

    Abstract. Artifact-centric models for business processes recently raised a lot of attention, as they manage to combine structural (i.e. data related) with dynamical (i.e. process related) aspects in a seamless way. Many frameworks developed under this approach, although, are not built explicitly for planning, one of the most prominent operations related to business processes. In this paper, we try to overcome this by proposing a framework named Dynamic Knowledge Bases, aimed at describing rich business domains through Description Logic-based ontologies, and where a set of actions allows the system to evolve by modifying such ontologies. This framework, by offering action rewriting and knowledge partialization, represents a viable and formal environment to develop decision making and planning techniques for DL-based artifact-centric business domains

    Planning and sequential decision making for human-aware robots

Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.This thesis explores the use of probabilistic techniques for enhancing the interaction between a human and a robotic assistant. The human in this context is regarded as an integral part of the system, providing a major contribution to the decision making process and is able to overwrite, re-evaluate and correct decisions made by the robot to fulfil her or his true intentions and ultimate goals and needs. Conversely, the robot is expected to behave as an intelligent collaborative agent that predicts human intentions and makes decisions by merging learned behaviours with the information it cmTently possesses. The work is motivated by the rapid increase of the application domains in which robotic systems operate, and the presence of humans in many of these domains. The proposed framework facilitates human-robot social integration by increasing the synergy between robot's capabilities and human needs, primarily during assistive navigational tasks. The first part of the thesis ets the groundwork by developing a path-planning/re-planning strategy able to produce smooth feasible paths to address the issue of navigating a robotic wheelchair in cluttered indoor environments. This strategy integrates a global path-planner that operates as a mission controller, and a local reactive planner that navigates locally in an optimal manner while preventing collisions with static and dynamic obstacles in the local area. The proposed strategy also encapsulates social behaviour, such as navigating through preferred routes, in order to generate socially and behavioura11y acceptable plans. The work then focuses on predicting and responding to human interactions with a robotic agent by exploiting probabilistic techniques for sequential decision making and planning under uncertainty. Dynamic Bayesian networks and partially observable Markov decision processes are examined for estimating human intention in order to minimise the flow of information between the human and the robot during navigation tasks. A framework to capture human behaviour, motivated by the human action cycle as derived from the psychology domain is developed. This framework embeds a human-robot interaction layer, which defines variables and procedures to model interaction scenarios, and facilitates the transfer of information during human-robot collaborative tasks. Experiments using a human-operated robotic wheelchair carrying out navigational daily routines are conducted to demonstrate the capacity of the proposed methodology to understand human intentions and comply with their long term plans. The results obtained are presented as the outcome of a set of trials conducted with actor users, or simulated experiments based on real scenarios

    A Locking Sweeping Method Based Path Planning for Unmanned Surface Vehicles in Dynamic Maritime Environments

    Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) are new marine intelligent platforms that can autonomously operate in various ocean environments with intelligent decision-making capability. As one of key technologies enabling such a capability, path planning algorithms underpin the navigation and motion control of USVs by providing optimized navigational trajectories. To accommodate complex maritime environments that include various static/moving obstacles, it is important to develop a computational efficient path planning algorithm for USVs so that real-time operation can be effectively carried out. This paper therefore proposes a new algorithm based on the fast sweeping method, named the locking sweeping method (LSM). Compared with other conventional path planning algorithms, the proposed LSM has an improved computational efficiency and can be well applied in dynamic environments that have multiple moving obstacles. When generating an optimal collision-free path, moving obstacles are modelled with ship domains that are calculated based upon ships’ velocities. To evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm, particularly the capacity in dealing with practical environments, three different sets of simulations were undertaken in environments built using electronic nautical charts (ENCs). Results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively cope with complex maritime traffic scenarios by generating smooth and safe trajectories
