    A second look at the toric h-polynomial of a cubical complex

    We provide an explicit formula for the toric hh-contribution of each cubical shelling component, and a new combinatorial model to prove Clara Chan's result on the non-negativity of these contributions. Our model allows for a variant of the Gessel-Shapiro result on the gg-polynomial of the cubical lattice, this variant may be shown by simple inclusion-exclusion. We establish an isomorphism between our model and Chan's model and provide a reinterpretation in terms of noncrossing partitions. By discovering another variant of the Gessel-Shapiro result in the work of Denise and Simion, we find evidence that the toric hh-polynomials of cubes are related to the Morgan-Voyce polynomials via Viennot's combinatorial theory of orthogonal polynomials.Comment: Minor correction

    The toric h-vector of a cubical complex in terms of noncrossing partition statistics

    This paper introduces a new and simple statistic on noncrossing partitions that expresses each coordinate of the toric hh-vector of a cubical complex, written in the basis of the Adin hh-vector entries, as the total weight of all noncrossing partitions. The same model may also be used to obtain a very simple combinatorial interpretation of the contribution of a cubical shelling component to the toric hh-vector. In this model, a strengthening of the symmetry expressed by the Dehn-Sommerville equations may be derived from the self-duality of the noncrossing partition lattice, exhibited by the involution of Simion and Ullman

    AbstractThis is an expository paper on connections between enumerative combinatorics and convex polytopes. It aims to give an essentially self-contained overview of five specific instances when enumerative combinatorics and convex polytopes arise jointly in problems whose initial formulation lies in only one of these two subjects. These examples constitute only a sample of such instances occurring in the work of several authors. On the enumerative side, they involved ordered graphical sequences, combinatorial statistics on the symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups, lattice paths, Baxter, André, and simsun permutations,q-Catalan andq-Schröder numbers. From the subject of polytopes, the examples involve the Ehrhart polynomial, the permutohedron, the associahedron, polytopes arising as intersections of cubes and simplices with half-spaces, and thecd-index of a polytope

    Collapsibility of CAT(0) spaces

    Collapsibility is a combinatorial strengthening of contractibility. We relate this property to metric geometry by proving the collapsibility of any complex that is CAT(0) with a metric for which all vertex stars are convex. This strengthens and generalizes a result by Crowley. Further consequences of our work are: (1) All CAT(0) cube complexes are collapsible. (2) Any triangulated manifold admits a CAT(0) metric if and only if it admits collapsible triangulations. (3) All contractible d-manifolds (d≠4d \ne 4) admit collapsible CAT(0) triangulations. This discretizes a classical result by Ancel--Guilbault.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures. The part on collapsibility of convex complexes has been removed and forms a new paper, called "Barycentric subdivisions of convexes complex are collapsible" (arXiv:1709.07930).     A Gray Code for the Shelling Types of the Boundary of a Hypercube

    We consider two shellings of the boundary of the hypercube equivalent if one can be transformed into the other by an isometry of the cube. We observe that a class of indecomposable permutations, bijectively equivalent to standard double occurrence words, may be used to encode one representative from each equivalence class of the shellings of the boundary of the hypercube. These permutations thus encode the shelling types of the boundary of the hypercube. We construct an adjacent transposition Gray code for this class of permutations. Our result is a signed variant of King's result showing that there is a transposition Gray code for indecomposable permutations

    Rees Products of Posets and Inequalities

    In this dissertation we will look at properties of two different posets from different perspectives. The first poset is the Rees product of the face lattice of the n-cube with the chain. Specifically we study the Möbius function of this poset. Our proof techniques include straightforward enumeration and a bijection between a set of labeled augmented skew diagrams and barred signed permutations which label the maximal chains of this poset. Because the Rees product of this poset is Cohen-Macaulay, we find a basis for the top homology group and a representation of the top homology group over the symmetric group both indexed by the set of labeled augmented skew diagrams. We also show that the Möbius function of the Rees product of a graded poset with the t-ary tree and the Rees product of its dual with the t-ary tree coincide. We discuss labelings for Rees and Segre products in general, particularly the Rees product of the face lattice of a polytope with the chain. We also look at cases where the Möbius function of a poset is equal to the permanent of a matrix and we consider local h-vectors for the barycentric subdivision of the n-cube. In each section we state open conjectures. The second poset in this dissertation is the Dowling lattice. In particular we look at the k = 1 case, that is, the partition lattice. We study inequalities on the flag vector of the partition lattice via a weighted boustrophedon transform and determine a more generalized version for the Dowling lattice. We generalize a determinantal formula of Niven and conclude with conjectures and avenues of study

    The 2019 Oberwolfach meeting "Geometric, Algebraic and Topological Combinatorics" was organized by Gil Kalai (Jerusalem), Isabella Novik (Seattle), Francisco Santos (Santander), and Volkmar Welker (Marburg). It covered a wide variety of aspects of Discrete Geometry, Algebraic Combinatorics with geometric flavor, and Topological Combinatorics. Some of the highlights of the conference included (1) Karim Adiprasito presented his very recent proof of the gg-conjecture for spheres (as a talk and as a "Q\&A" evening session) (2) Federico Ardila gave an overview on "The geometry of matroids", including his recent extension with Denham and Huh of previous work of Adiprasito, Huh and Katz
