    Motion-Planning and Control of Autonomous Vehicles to Satisfy Linear Temporal Logic Specifications

    Motion-planning is an essential component of autonomous aerial and terrestrial vehicles. The canonical Motion-planning problem, which is widely studied in the literature, is of planning point-to-point motion while avoiding obstacles. However, the desired degree of vehicular autonomy has steadily risen, and has consequently led to motion-planning problems where a vehicle is required to accomplish a high-level intelligent task, rather than simply move between two points. One way of specifying such intelligent tasks is via linear temporal logic (LTL) formulae. LTL is a formal logic system that includes temporal operators such as always, eventually, and until besides the usual logical operators. For autonomous vehicles, LTL formulae can concisely express tasks such as persistent surveillance, safety requirements, and temporal orders of visits to multiple locations. Recent control theoretic literature has discussed the generation of reference trajectories and/or the synthesis of feedback control laws to enable a vehicle to move in manners that satisfy LTL specifications. A crucial step in such synthesis is the generation of a so-called discrete abstraction of a vehicle kinematic/dynamic model. Typical techniques of generating a discrete abstraction require strong assumptions on controllability and/or linearity. This dissertation discusses fast motion-planning and control techniques to satisfy LTL specifications for vehicle models with nonholonomic kinematic constraints, which do not satisfy the aforesaid assumptions. The main contributions of this dissertation are as follows. First, we present a new technique for constructing discrete abstractions of a Dubins vehicle model (namely, a vehicle that moves forward at a constant speed with a minimum turning radius). This technique relies on the so-called method of lifted graphs and precomputed reachable set calculations. Using this technique, we provide an algorithm to generate vehicle reference trajectories satisfying LTL specifications without requiring complete controllability in the presence of workspace constraints, and without requiring linearity or linearization of the vehicle model. Second, we present a technique for centralized motion-planning for a team of vehicles to collaboratively satisfy a common LTL specification. This technique is also based on the method of lifted graphs. Third, we present an incremental version of the proposed motion-planning techniques, which has an “anytime property. This property means that a feasible solution is computed quickly, and the iterative updates are made to this solution with a guarantee of convergence to an optimal solution. This version is suited for real-time implementation, where a hard bound on the computation time is imposed. Finally, we present a randomized sampling-based technique for generating reference trajectories that satisfy given LTL specifications. This technique is an alternative to the aforesaid technique based on lifted graphs. We illustrate the proposed techniques using numerical simulation examples. We demonstrate the superiority of the proposed techniques in comparison to the existing literature in terms of computational time and memory requirements

    Dynamics and Control of Nonholonomic Systems with Internal Degrees of Freedom

    Nonholonomic systems model many robots as well as animals and other systems. Although such systems have been studied extensively over the last century, much work still remains to be done on their dynamics and control. Many techniques have been developed for controlling kinematic nonholonomic systems or simplified dynamic versions, however control of high dimensional, underactuated nonholonomic systems remains to be addressed. This dissertation helps fill this gap by developing a control algorithm that can be applied to systems with three or more configuration variables and just one input. We also analyze the dynamic effects of passive degrees of freedom and elastic potentials which are commonly observed in such systems showing that the addition of a passive degree of freedom can even be used to improve the locomotion characteristics of a system. Such elastic potentials can be present due to compliant mechanisms or origami, both of which can exhibit bistability and many other properties that can be useful in the design of robots

    A Framework for Collaborative Multi-task, Multi-robot Missions

    Robotics is a transformative technology that will empower our civilization for a new scale of human endeavors. Massive scale is only possible through the collaboration of individual or groups of robots. Collaboration allows specialization, meaning a multirobot system may accommodate heterogeneous platforms including human partners. This work develops a unified control architecture for collaborative missions comprised of multiple, multi-robot tasks. Using kinematic equations and Jacobian matrices, the system states are transformed into alternative control spaces which are more useful for the designer or more convenient for the operator. The architecture allows multiple tasks to be combined, composing tightly coordinated missions. Using this approach, the designer is able to compensate for non-ideal behavior in the appropriate space using whatever control scheme they choose. This work presents a general design methodology, including analysis techniques for relevant control metrics like stability, responsiveness, and disturbance rejection, which were missing in prior work. Multiple tasks may be combined into a collaborative mission. The unified motion control architecture merges the control space components for each task into a concise federated system to facilitate analysis and implementation. The task coordination function defines task commands as functions of mission commands and state values to create explicit closed-loop collaboration. This work presents analysis techniques to understand the effects of cross-coupling tasks. This work analyzes system stability for the particular control architecture and identifies an explicit condition to ensure stable switching when reallocating robots. We are unaware of any other automated control architectures that address large-scale collaborative systems composed of task-oriented multi-robot coalitions where relative spatial control is critical to mission performance. This architecture and methodology have been validated in experiments and in simulations, repeating earlier work and exploring new scenarios and. It can perform large-scale, complex missions via a rigorous design methodology

    Physics-based Machine Learning Methods for Control and Sensing in Fish-like Robots

    Underwater robots are important for the construction and maintenance of underwater infrastructure, underwater resource extraction, and defense. However, they currently fall far behind biological swimmers such as fish in agility, efficiency, and sensing capabilities. As a result, mimicking the capabilities of biological swimmers has become an area of significant research interest. In this work, we focus specifically on improving the control and sensing capabilities of fish-like robots. Our control work focuses on using the Chaplygin sleigh, a two-dimensional nonholonomic system which has been used to model fish-like swimming, as part of a curriculum to train a reinforcement learning agent to control a fish-like robot to track a prescribed path. The agent is first trained on the Chaplygin sleigh model, which is not an accurate model of the swimming robot but crucially has similar physics; having learned these physics, the agent is then trained on a simulated swimming robot, resulting in faster convergence compared to only training on the simulated swimming robot. Our sensing work separately considers using kinematic data (proprioceptive sensing) and using surface pressure sensors. The effect of a swimming body\u27s internal dynamics on proprioceptive sensing is investigated by collecting time series of kinematic data of both a flexible and rigid body in a water tunnel behind a moving obstacle performing different motions, and using machine learning to classify the motion of the upstream obstacle. This revealed that the flexible body could more effectively classify the motion of the obstacle, even if only one if its internal states is used. We also consider the problem of using time series data from a `lateral line\u27 of pressure sensors on a fish-like body to estimate the position of an upstream obstacle. Feature extraction from the pressure data is attempted with a state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN), and this is compared with using the dominant modes of a Koopman operator constructed on the data as features. It is found that both sets of features achieve similar estimation performance using a dense neural network to perform the estimation. This highlights the potential of the Koopman modes as an interpretable alternative to CNNs for high-dimensional time series. This problem is also extended to inferring the time evolution of the flow field surrounding the body using the same surface measurements, which is performed by first estimating the dominant Koopman modes of the surrounding flow, and using those modes to perform a flow reconstruction. This strategy of mapping from surface to field modes is more interpretable than directly constructing a mapping of unsteady fluid states, and is found to be effective at reconstructing the flow. The sensing frameworks developed as a result of this work allow better awareness of obstacles and flow patterns, knowledge which can inform the generation of paths through the fluid that the developed controller can track, contributing to the autonomy of swimming robots in challenging environments

    Safe navigation and motion coordination control strategies for unmanned aerial vehicles

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become very popular for many military and civilian applications including in agriculture, construction, mining, environmental monitoring, etc. A desirable feature for UAVs is the ability to navigate and perform tasks autonomously with least human interaction. This is a very challenging problem due to several factors such as the high complexity of UAV applications, operation in harsh environments, limited payload and onboard computing power and highly nonlinear dynamics. Therefore, more research is still needed towards developing advanced reliable control strategies for UAVs to enable safe navigation in unknown and dynamic environments. This problem is even more challenging for multi-UAV systems where it is more efficient to utilize information shared among the networked vehicles. Therefore, the work presented in this thesis contributes towards the state-of-the-art in UAV control for safe autonomous navigation and motion coordination of multi-UAV systems. The first part of this thesis deals with single-UAV systems. Initially, a hybrid navigation framework is developed for autonomous mobile robots using a general 2D nonholonomic unicycle model that can be applied to different types of UAVs, ground vehicles and underwater vehicles considering only lateral motion. Then, the more complex problem of three-dimensional (3D) collision-free navigation in unknown/dynamic environments is addressed. To that end, advanced 3D reactive control strategies are developed adopting the sense-and-avoid paradigm to produce quick reactions around obstacles. A special case of navigation in 3D unknown confined environments (i.e. tunnel-like) is also addressed. General 3D kinematic models are considered in the design which makes these methods applicable to different UAV types in addition to underwater vehicles. Moreover, different implementation methods for these strategies with quadrotor-type UAVs are also investigated considering UAV dynamics in the control design. Practical experiments and simulations were carried out to analyze the performance of the developed methods. The second part of this thesis addresses safe navigation for multi-UAV systems. Distributed motion coordination methods of multi-UAV systems for flocking and 3D area coverage are developed. These methods offer good computational cost for large-scale systems. Simulations were performed to verify the performance of these methods considering systems with different sizes

    Parallel robots with unconventional joints to achieve under-actuation and reconfigurability

    The aim of the thesis is to define, analyze, and verify through simulations and practical implementations, parallel robots with unconventional joints that allow them to be under-actuated and/or reconfigurable. The new designs will be derived from the: * 6SPS robot (alternatively 6UPS or 6SPU, depending on the implementation) when considering the spatial case (i.e., robots with 3 degrees of freedom of rotation and 3 degrees of freedom of translation). * S-3SPS robot (alternatively S-3UPS or S-3SPU, depending on the implementation) when considering spherical robots (i.e., robots with 3 degrees of freedom of rotation). In both cases, we will see how, through certain geometric transformations, some of the standard joints can be replaced by lockable or non-holonomic joints. These substitutions permit reducing the number of legs (and hence the number of actuators needed to control the robot), without losing the robot's ability to bring its mobile platform to any position and orientation (in case of a spatial robot), or to any orientation (in case of a spherical robot), within its workspace. The expected benefit of these new designs is to obtain parallel robots with: * larger working spaces because the possibility of collisions between legs is reduced, and the number of joints (with their intrinsic range limitations) is also reduced; * lower weight because the number of actuators and joints is reduced; and * lower cost because the number of actuators and controllers is also reduced. The elimination of an actuator and the introduction of a motion constraint reduces in one the dimension of the space of allowed velocities attainable from a given configuration. As a result, it will be necessary, in general, to plan maneuvers to reach the desired configuration for the moving platform. Therefore, the obtained robots will only be suitable for applications where accuracy is required in the final position and a certain margin of error is acceptable in the generated trajectories.El objetivo de esta tesis es definir, analizar y verificar, mediante simulaciones e implementaciones prácticas, robots paralelos con articulaciones no-convencionales con el fin de incorporarles propiedades de sub-actuación y reconfigurabilidad.     Experiments in thrusterless robot locomotion control for space applications

    While performing complex assembly tasks or moving about in space, a space robot should minimize the amount of propellant consumed. A study is presented of space robot locomotion and orientation without the use of thrusters. The goal was to design a robot control paradigm that will perform thrusterless locomotion between two points on a structure, and to implement this paradigm on an experimental robot. A two arm free flying robot was constructed which floats on a cushion of air to simulate in 2-D the drag free, zero-g environment of space. The robot can impart momentum to itself by pushing off from an external structure in a coordinated two arm maneuver, and can then reorient itself by activating a momentum wheel. The controller design consists of two parts: a high level strategic controller and a low level dynamic controller. The control paradigm was verified experimentally by commanding the robot to push off from a structure with both arms, rotate 180 degs while translating freely, and then to catch itself on another structure. This method, based on the computed torque, provides a linear feedback law in momentum and its derivatives for a system of rigid bodies
