Iterative Joint Channel Estimation and Multi-User Detection for Multiple-Antenna Aided OFDM Systems
Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems have recently attracted substantial research interest. However, compared to Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems, channel estimation in the MIMO scenario becomes more challenging, owing to the increased number of independent transmitter-receiver links to be estimated. In the context of the Bell LAyered Space-Time architecture (BLAST) or Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) multi-user MIMO OFDM systems, none of the known channel estimation techniques allows the number of users to be higher than the number of receiver antennas, which is often referred to as a “rank-deficient” scenario, owing to the constraint imposed by the rank of the MIMO channel matrix. Against this background, in this paper we propose a new Genetic Algorithm (GA) assisted iterative Joint Channel Estimation and Multi-User Detection (GA-JCEMUD) approach for multi-user MIMO SDMA-OFDM systems, which provides an effective solution to the multi-user MIMO channel estimation problem in the above-mentioned rank-deficient scenario. Furthermore, the GAs invoked in the data detection literature can only provide a hard-decision output for the Forward Error Correction (FEC) or channel decoder, which inevitably limits the system’s achievable performance. By contrast, our proposed GA is capable of providing “soft” outputs and hence it becomes capable of achieving an improved performance with the aid of FEC decoders. A range of simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme. Channel Hardening-Exploiting Message Passing (CHEMP) Receiver in Large-Scale MIMO Systems
In this paper, we propose a MIMO receiver algorithm that exploits {\em
channel hardening} that occurs in large MIMO channels. Channel hardening refers
to the phenomenon where the off-diagonal terms of the matrix
become increasingly weaker compared to the diagonal terms as the size of the
channel gain matrix increases. Specifically, we propose a message
passing detection (MPD) algorithm which works with the real-valued matched
filtered received vector (whose signal term becomes ,
where is the transmitted vector), and uses a Gaussian approximation
on the off-diagonal terms of the matrix. We also propose a
simple estimation scheme which directly obtains an estimate of (instead of an estimate of ), which is used as an effective
channel estimate in the MPD algorithm. We refer to this receiver as the {\em
channel hardening-exploiting message passing (CHEMP)} receiver. The proposed
CHEMP receiver achieves very good performance in large-scale MIMO systems
(e.g., in systems with 16 to 128 uplink users and 128 base station antennas).
For the considered large MIMO settings, the complexity of the proposed MPD
algorithm is almost the same as or less than that of the minimum mean square
error (MMSE) detection. This is because the MPD algorithm does not need a
matrix inversion. It also achieves a significantly better performance compared
to MMSE and other message passing detection algorithms using MMSE estimate of
. We also present a convergence analysis of the proposed MPD
algorithm. Further, we design optimized irregular low density parity check
(LDPC) codes specific to the considered large MIMO channel and the CHEMP
receiver through EXIT chart matching. The LDPC codes thus obtained achieve
improved coded bit error rate performance compared to off-the-shelf irregular
LDPC codes
Application-Based Coexistence of Different Waveforms on Non-orthogonal Multiple Access
The coexistence of different wireless communication systems such as LTE and
Wi-Fi by sharing the unlicensed band is well studied in the literature. In
these studies, various methods are proposed to support the coexistence of
systems, including listen-before-talk mechanism, joint user association and
resource allocation. However, in this study, the coexistence of different
waveform structures in the same resource elements are studied under the theory
of non-orthogonal multiple access. This study introduces a paradigm-shift on
NOMA towards the application-centric waveform coexistence. Throughout the
paper, the coexistence of different waveforms is explained with two specific
use cases, which are power-balanced NOMA and joint radar-sensing and
communication with NOMA. In addition, some of the previous works in the
literature regarding non-orthogonal waveform coexistence are reviewed. However,
the concept is not limited to these use cases. With the rapid development of
wireless technology, next-generation wireless systems are proposed to be
flexible and hybrid, having different kinds of capabilities such as sensing,
security, intelligence, control, and computing. Therefore, the concept of
different waveforms' coexistence to meet these concerns are becoming impressive
for researchers.Comment: Submitted to IEEE for possible publication. arXiv admin note: text

Enhanced Air-Interfaces for Fifth Generation Mobile Broadband Communication
In broadband wireless multicarrier communication systems, intersymbol interference (ISI) and intercarrier interference (ICI) should be reduced. In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the cyclic prefix (CP) guarantees to reduce the ISI interference. However, the CP reduces spectral and power efficiency. In this thesis, iterative interference cancellation (IIC) with iterative decoding is used to reduce ISI and ICI from the received signal in multicarrier modulation (MCM) systems. Alternative schemes as well as OFDM with insufficient CP are considered; filter bank multicarrier (FBMC/Offset QAM) and discrete wavelet transform based multicarrier modulation (DWT-MCM). IIC is applied in these different schemes. The required components are calculated from either the hard decision of the demapper output or the estimated decoded signal. These components are used to improve the received signal. Channel estimation and data detection are very important parts of the receiver design of the wireless communication systems. Iterative channel estimation using Wiener filter channel estimation with known pilots and IIC is used to estimate and improve data detection. Scattered and interference approximation method (IAM) preamble pilot are using to calculate the estimated values of the channel coefficients. The estimated soft decoded symbols with pilot are used to reduce the ICI and ISI and improve the channel estimation. The combination of Multi-Input Multi-Output MIMO and OFDM enhances the air-interface for the wireless communication system. In a MIMO-MCM scheme, IIC and MIMO-IIC-based successive interference cancellation (SIC) are proposed to reduce the ICI/ISI and cross interference to a given antenna from the signal transmitted from the target and the other antenna respectively. The number of iterations required can be calculated by analysing the convergence of the IIC with the help of EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts. A new EXIT approach is proposed to provide a means to define performance for a given outage probability on quasi-static channels
