    Estimation and detection techniques for doubly-selective channels in wireless communications

    A fundamental problem in communications is the estimation of the channel. The signal transmitted through a communications channel undergoes distortions so that it is often received in an unrecognizable form at the receiver. The receiver must expend significant signal processing effort in order to be able to decode the transmit signal from this received signal. This signal processing requires knowledge of how the channel distorts the transmit signal, i.e. channel knowledge. To maintain a reliable link, the channel must be estimated and tracked by the receiver. The estimation of the channel at the receiver often proceeds by transmission of a signal called the 'pilot' which is known a priori to the receiver. The receiver forms its estimate of the transmitted signal based on how this known signal is distorted by the channel, i.e. it estimates the channel from the received signal and the pilot. This design of the pilot is a function of the modulation, the type of training and the channel. [Continues.

    Enhanced Channel Estimation Based On Basis Expansion Using Slepian Sequences for Time Varying OFDM Systems

    The Channel estimation in OFDM has become very important to recover the accurate information from the received data as the next generation of wireless technology has very high data rate along with the very high speed mobile terminals as users. In addition the fast fading channels, ICI, multipath fading channels may completely destroy the data. Also it is required to use less complex method for estimation. We are proposing the method which compares the number of techniques and gives the results in BER Vs SNR graphs. The LS estimation technique is less complex as compared to MMSE estimation but gives fails in accuracy. Using Prolate function we can reduce the complexity in calculation of parameters. If compared with state of art approach where the complexity is O(N)3, the complexity using Prolate function is O(N)2.The function depends upon maximum delay and maximum Doppler frequency spread thus parameter calculation is reduced. The technique dose not calculate particular channel characteristics. Slepian sequences utilizes the bandwidth as the sharp pulses replace the regular rectangular pulses which causes spectral leakage and thus ICI. The simulation of BER Vs SNR using CP and UW with and without Prolate is proposed that increases spectral efficiency with reduced calculations replacing rectangular pulses by Slepian pulses which increase energy concentration by Sharpe pulses thus reduction in inter carrier interference caused by multipath fading.     Channel estimation and tracking algorithms for vehicle to vehicle communications

    The vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications channels are highly time-varying, making reliable communication difficult. This problem is particularly challenging because the standard of the V2V communications (IEEE 802.11p standard) is based on the WLAN IEEE 802.11a standard, which was designed for indoor, relatively stationary channels; so the IEEE 802.11p standard is not customized for outdo or, highly mobile non-stationary channels. In this thesis,We propose Channel estimation and tracking algorithms that are suitable for highly-time varying channels. The proposed algorithms utilize the finite alphabet property of the transmitted symbol, time domain truncation, decision-directed as well as pilot information. The proposed algorithm s improve the overall system performance in terms of bit error rates, enabling the system to achieve higher data rates and larger packet lengths at high relative velocities. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms achieve improved performance for all the V2V channel models with different velocities, and for different modulation schemes and packet sizes as compared to the conventional least squares and other previously proposed channel estimation techniques for V2V channels

    Joint detection and channel estimation for MIMO systems with SC-FDE modulations

    SC modulation (Single-Carrier) with FDE (Frequency-Domain Equalization) allows excellent performance in severely time-dispersive channels, provided that accurate channel estimates are available at the receiver. For this purpose, pilot symbols and/or training sequences are usually multiplexed with data symbols, which lead to spectral degradation. As an alternative, we can use implicit pilots (i.e., pilots superimposed to data). In this paper we consider MIMO SC-FDE systems where the channel estimation is based on either explicit or implicit pilots, for comparison purposes. An iterative receiver with joint equalization, turbo decoding and channel estimation was employed for optimum results, and to reduce the high interference levels between data and pilots (for the implicit pilots).     Pilot Design for Enhanced Channel Estimation in Doubly Selective Channels

    This paper investigates pilot design for enhanced channel estimation in single carrier communication systems over doubly-selective channels (DSC). Our contribution is twofold: first, we propose to use Huffman sequences as pilot clusters with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), yet with good channel estimation performance when periodic pilot placement is adopted; second, we propose a low-complexity pilot placement strategy based on the analysis of the complex-exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM) of the DSC. The latter leads to improved channel estimation performance with useful insights for pilot placement

    Timing and Carrier Synchronization in Wireless Communication Systems: A Survey and Classification of Research in the Last 5 Years

    Timing and carrier synchronization is a fundamental requirement for any wireless communication system to work properly. Timing synchronization is the process by which a receiver node determines the correct instants of time at which to sample the incoming signal. Carrier synchronization is the process by which a receiver adapts the frequency and phase of its local carrier oscillator with those of the received signal. In this paper, we survey the literature over the last 5 years (2010–2014) and present a comprehensive literature review and classification of the recent research progress in achieving timing and carrier synchronization in single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), cooperative relaying, and multiuser/multicell interference networks. Considering both single-carrier and multi-carrier communication systems, we survey and categorize the timing and carrier synchronization techniques proposed for the different communication systems focusing on the system model assumptions for synchronization, the synchronization challenges, and the state-of-the-art synchronization solutions and their limitations. Finally, we envision some future research directions
