    Instruction sequence is a key concept in practice, but it has as yet not come prominently into the picture in theoretical circles. This paper concerns instruction sequences, the behaviours produced by them under execution, the interaction between these behaviours and components of the execution environment, and two issues relating to computability theory. Positioning Turing's result regarding the undecidability of the halting problem as a result about programs rather than machines, and taking instruction sequences as programs, we analyse the autosolvability requirement that a program of a certain kind must solve the halting problem for all programs of that kind. We present novel results concerning this autosolvability requirement. The analysis is streamlined by using the notion of a functional unit, which is an abstract state-based model of a machine. In the case where the behaviours exhibited by a component of an execution environment can be viewed as the behaviours of a machine in its different states, the behaviours concerned are completely determined by a functional unit. The above-mentioned analysis involves functional units whose possible states represent the possible contents of the tapes of Turing machines with a particular tape alphabet. We also investigate functional units whose possible states are the natural numbers.     Generating Predicate Callback Summaries for the Android Framework

    One of the challenges of analyzing, testing and debugging Android apps is that the potential execution orders of callbacks are missing from the apps' source code. However, bugs, vulnerabilities and refactoring transformations have been found to be related to callback sequences. Existing work on control flow analysis of Android apps have mainly focused on analyzing GUI events. GUI events, although being a key part of determining control flow of Android apps, do not offer a complete picture. Our observation is that orthogonal to GUI events, the Android API calls also play an important role in determining the order of callbacks. In the past, such control flow information has been modeled manually. This paper presents a complementary solution of constructing program paths for Android apps. We proposed a specification technique, called Predicate Callback Summary (PCS), that represents the callback control flow information (including callback sequences as well as the conditions under which the callbacks are invoked) in Android API methods and developed static analysis techniques to automatically compute and apply such summaries to construct apps' callback sequences. Our experiments show that by applying PCSs, we are able to construct Android apps' control flow graphs, including inter-callback relations, and also to detect infeasible paths involving multiple callbacks.     Non-Strict Independence-Based Program Parallelization Using Sharing and Freeness Information.

    The current ubiquity of multi-core processors has brought renewed interest in program parallelization. Logic programs allow studying the parallelization of programs with complex, dynamic data structures with (declarative) pointers in a comparatively simple semantic setting. In this context, automatic parallelizers which exploit and-parallelism rely on notions of independence in order to ensure certain efficiency properties. “Non-strict” independence is a more relaxed notion than the traditional notion of “strict” independence which still ensures the relevant efficiency properties and can allow considerable more parallelism. Non-strict independence cannot be determined solely at run-time (“a priori”) and thus global analysis is a requirement. However, extracting non-strict independence information from available analyses and domains is non-trivial. This paper provides on one hand an extended presentation of our classic techniques for compile-time detection of non-strict independence based on extracting information from (abstract interpretation-based) analyses using the now well understood and popular Sharing + Freeness domain. This includes algorithms for combined compile-time/run-time detection which involve special run-time checks for this type of parallelism. In addition, we propose herein novel annotation (parallelization) algorithms, URLP and CRLP, which are specially suited to non-strict independence. We also propose new ways of using the Sharing + Freeness information to optimize how the run-time environments of goals are kept apart during parallel execution. Finally, we also describe the implementation of these techniques in our parallelizing compiler and recall some early performance results.     Tools for Search Tree Visualization: The APT Tool

    The control part of the execution of a constraint logic program can be conceptually shown as a search-tree, where nodes correspond to calis, and whose branches represent conjunctions and disjunctions. This tree represents the search space traversed by the program, and has also a direct relationship with the amount of work performed by the program. The nodes of the tree can be used to display information regarding the state and origin of instantiation of the variables involved in each cali. This depiction can also be used for the enumeration process. These are the features implemented in APT, a tool which runs constraint logic programs while depicting a (modified) search-tree, keeping at the same time information about the state of the variables at every moment in the execution. This information can be used to replay the execution at will, both forwards and backwards in time. These views can be abstracted when the size of the execution requires it. The search-tree view is used as a framework onto which constraint-level visualizations (such as those presented in the following chapter) can be attached
