    Green Logistics development and evaluation of the carbon footprint

    Along with the worldwide climate changing, human activities and the rapid deterioration of the environment, Low-carbon economy in recent years become increasingly focus of attention in people's lives. The economic reform will gradually penetrate into the logistics system, modern logistics as a composite service industry, play a decisive role in the modern division of labor and cooperation under the social environment, it is a manufacturing! The important supporting business is an important bridge between production and consumption. The logistics industry is in a period of rapid development, the logistics process not only energy consumption demand is big, and the C02 emissions are also large. Coupled with the destruction of the human living environment, the greenhouse effect becomes more and more prominent, more the need of the development of green logistics, low carbon logistics. However, at home and abroad for most of the research of this aspect is still stay in the stage of qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis of the literature on energy consumption and C02 emission of less amount of logistics system. There are four objectives will be discussed. The first objective is the relevant literature on the green logistics is summarized, which lays the foundation for the research in this paper, green logistics. The second objective is the energy consumption and C02 calculation models were summarized, to provide reference for other scholars to conduct relevant research. The third objective is through statistical analysis, master the different modes of transport energy consumption and C02 emissions, and provide the basis for enterprises to choose the mode of transport.     Transforming state enterprises in Poland : macroeconomic evidence on adjustment

    Basing their report on repeat visits in late 1992 to 75 large state-owned manufacturing enterprises (which had been earlier surveyed in mid-1991), the authors present optimistic new evidence about the transformation of state-owned enterprises in Poland. This evidence shows state-owned enterprises in a much more favorable light than the stereotype of myopic, decapitalizing companies that dominates discussion of Poland's state manufacturing sector. Success stories are emerging, and the state sector is far from a write-off. Moreover, favorable evidence is drawn from all manufacturing sectors, attesting to thepotential for a diversified manufacturing base. The state-owned enterprises'operations are largely autonomous, so the positive adjustments indicate that decentralized approaches to transformation could work - if bolstered by appropriate managerial incentives. But several problems remain, and many issues have yet to be addressed. The authors examine various adjustment indicators (labor shedding, material and energy costs, bank borrowings, and export performance) and correlate these with firms classified by 1992 financial performance. (By 1992, presumably, the transitional measurement distortions of 1990 and 1991 had disappeared.) They show that significant differences exist between successful and unsuccessful firms. Managers in successful firms have tended to stress a change in product mix, have generally become more efficient in the use of materials and energy, have maintained labor productivity, and have shown restraint in setting wages and in borrowing from banks. The authors discuss key transformation issues: the disappearance of such safety valves as easy bank loans and interfirm credit, hardening of the microeconomic budget constraint, excess-wage tax reform, and, most important, managerial attitudes and incentives. To complete the picture, they correlate the results of manager interviews with the quantitative performance of firms. Essentially, firms have learned a good deal about operating in a market economy in the past three years, and managers have matured.     A SIMULATION MODEL FOR MAPPING CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS TO DEVELOP A GREEN LOGISTICS SYSTEM

    The aim of this thesis is to develop a simulation tool that helps companies to track and re-evaluate the environmental impacts on their logistics systems. A discrete event based simulation model is used and developed in this thesis and it provides a simple and visible solution to map the carbon emission footprints and calculate carbon emission values throughout an outbound logistics distribution network. The total carbon emission level in a simplified logistics distribution system is primarily determined by the total transport distance and different emission factors which categorized by many other important parameters such as load factor, empty trip rate, batch size, vehicle type and fuel consumption rate and so on. By visualizing carbon emission footprints and understanding how the carbon emission values in different transport paths are accumulated in the whole distribution system, the developed simulation model helps supply chain and logistics planners to investigate their current logistics systems and identify improvement areas in their systems to lead a better and greener logistics design. The level of packaging identity in Russia is close or may be a little bit above zero; the paper gives the detailed analysis of current state of the Russian packaging industry, food distribution and the current trends in packaging improvement. With consumer preferences reflecting the growing concern for the environment, retail delivery businesses are at the crossroads of implementing a sustainable operational and financial business model of delivering packages to customers. In this thesis, we will address the issue of sustainable packaging in retail delivery companies by evaluating the financial, environmental and operational viability of such strategies. The thesis will be limited to the downstream order fulfillment cycle from the retail delivery company to the customer. We will focus on three areas applicable to sustainable packaging. The first area is materials innovation where we will analyze alternative materials suitable for retail delivery packaging. The second area involves waste elimination through reducing packaging material use and reusing of packaging materials through a returnable tote program.     A warehouse design framework for order processing and materials handling improvement - Case Etra Oy

    Warehouses function as node points in the supply chain linking the material flows between the supplier and the customer As a result of the highly competitive market environment companies are continuously forced to improve their warehousing operations. Many companies have also customized their value proposition to better meet customer demands, which has led to changes in the role of warehouses. In such conditions improvement of order processing and materials handling can bring significant cost savings and at the same time increase customer value. The purpose of this study is to develop a warehouse design framework that supports systematic decision making, and show that this framework can be used to reduce order processing cycle times and improve the overall performance of a warehouse. The empirical part of this thesis was conducted as a case study in a Finnish technical wholesales company. Data for the study was collected from two primary sources. The first source was a review of the company’s order history. The material was profiled to determine ordering patterns of products and to understand order processing needs. The second source of research material came from a participant-observation of warehouse employees. This allowed assessing the overall distribution of time between different warehousing activities and identifying most critical bottlenecks in the warehousing process. The results of this study show that even simple planning methodologies can provide general guidelines for designing warehouse processes. The results also imply that companies with poor information infrastructure are unable to efficiently track operations that are performed within the warehouse. This emphasizes the fact that management of information flows is becoming an increasingly important criterion to successfully plan and allocate resources within the warehouse
