Impact of community structure on information transfer
The observation that real complex networks have internal structure has important implication for dynamic processes occurring on such topologies. Here we investigate the impact of community structure on a model of information transfer able to deal with both search and congestion simultaneously. We show that networks with fuzzy community structure are more efficient in terms of packet delivery than those with pronounced community structure. We also propose an alternative packet routing algorithm which takes advantage of the knowledge of communities to improve information transfer and show that in the context of the model an intermediate level of community structure is optimal. Finally, we show that in a hierarchical network setting, providing knowledge of communities at the level of highest modularity will improve network capacity by the largest amount
Recursive SDN for Carrier Networks
Control planes for global carrier networks should be programmable (so that
new functionality can be easily introduced) and scalable (so they can handle
the numerical scale and geographic scope of these networks). Neither
traditional control planes nor new SDN-based control planes meet both of these
goals. In this paper, we propose a framework for recursive routing computations
that combines the best of SDN (programmability) and traditional networks
(scalability through hierarchy) to achieve these two desired properties.
Through simulation on graphs of up to 10,000 nodes, we evaluate our design's
ability to support a variety of routing and traffic engineering solutions,
while incorporating a fast failure recovery mechanism
Secure Routing in Wireless Mesh Networks
Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have emerged as a promising concept to meet the
challenges in next-generation networks such as providing flexible, adaptive,
and reconfigurable architecture while offering cost-effective solutions to the
service providers. Unlike traditional Wi-Fi networks, with each access point
(AP) connected to the wired network, in WMNs only a subset of the APs are
required to be connected to the wired network. The APs that are connected to
the wired network are called the Internet gateways (IGWs), while the APs that
do not have wired connections are called the mesh routers (MRs). The MRs are
connected to the IGWs using multi-hop communication. The IGWs provide access to
conventional clients and interconnect ad hoc, sensor, cellular, and other
networks to the Internet. However, most of the existing routing protocols for
WMNs are extensions of protocols originally designed for mobile ad hoc networks
(MANETs) and thus they perform sub-optimally. Moreover, most routing protocols
for WMNs are designed without security issues in mind, where the nodes are all
assumed to be honest. In practical deployment scenarios, this assumption does
not hold. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of security issues in
WMNs and then particularly focuses on secure routing in these networks. First,
it identifies security vulnerabilities in the medium access control (MAC) and
the network layers. Various possibilities of compromising data confidentiality,
data integrity, replay attacks and offline cryptanalysis are also discussed.
Then various types of attacks in the MAC and the network layers are discussed.
After enumerating the various types of attacks on the MAC and the network
layer, the chapter briefly discusses on some of the preventive mechanisms for

The Spatial Variability of Vehicle Densities as Determinant of Urban Network Capacity
Due to the complexity of the traffic flow dynamics in urban road networks,
most quantitative descriptions of city traffic so far are based on computer
simulations. This contribution pursues a macroscopic (fluid-dynamic) simulation
approach, which facilitates a simple simulation of congestion spreading in
cities. First, we show that a quantization of the macroscopic turning flows
into units of single vehicles is necessary to obtain realistic fluctuations in
the traffic variables, and how this can be implemented in a fluid-dynamic
model. Then, we propose a new method to simulate destination flows without the
requirement of individual route assignments. Combining both methods allows us
to study a variety of different simulation scenarios. These reveal fundamental
relationships between the average flow, the average density, and the
variability of the vehicle densities. Considering the inhomogeneity of traffic
as an independent variable can eliminate the scattering of congested flow
measurements. The variability also turns out to be a key variable of urban
traffic performance. Our results can be explained through the number of full
links of the road network, and approximated by a simple analytical formula
A critical analysis of research potential, challenges and future directives in industrial wireless sensor networks
In recent years, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) have emerged as an important research theme with applications spanning a wide range of industries including automation, monitoring, process control, feedback systems and automotive. Wide scope of IWSNs applications ranging from small production units, large oil and gas industries to nuclear fission control, enables a fast-paced research in this field. Though IWSNs offer advantages of low cost, flexibility, scalability, self-healing, easy deployment and reformation, yet they pose certain limitations on available potential and introduce challenges on multiple fronts due to their susceptibility to highly complex and uncertain industrial environments. In this paper a detailed discussion on design objectives, challenges and solutions, for IWSNs, are presented. A careful evaluation of industrial systems, deadlines and possible hazards in industrial atmosphere are discussed. The paper also presents a thorough review of the existing standards and industrial protocols and gives a critical evaluation of potential of these standards and protocols along with a detailed discussion on available hardware platforms, specific industrial energy harvesting techniques and their capabilities. The paper lists main service providers for IWSNs solutions and gives insight of future trends and research gaps in the field of IWSNs
