Monitoring and detection of agitation in dementia: towards real-time and big-data solutions
The changing demographic profile of the population has potentially challenging social, geopolitical, and financial consequences for individuals, families, the wider society, and governments globally. The demographic change will result in a rapidly growing elderly population with healthcare implications which importantly include Alzheimer type conditions (a leading cause of dementia). Dementia requires long term care to manage the negative behavioral symptoms which are primarily exhibited in terms of agitation and aggression as the condition develops. This paper considers the nature of dementia along with the issues and challenges implicit in its management. The Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) are introduced with factors (precursors) to the onset of agitation and aggression. Independent living is considered, health monitoring and implementation in context-aware decision-support systems is discussed with consideration of data analytics. Implicit in health monitoring are technical and ethical constraints, we briefly consider these constraints with the ability to generalize to a range of medical conditions. We postulate that health monitoring offers exciting potential opportunities however the challenges lie in the effective realization of independent assisted living while meeting the ethical challenges, achieving this remains an open research question remains.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

PinMe: Tracking a Smartphone User around the World
With the pervasive use of smartphones that sense, collect, and process
valuable information about the environment, ensuring location privacy has
become one of the most important concerns in the modern age. A few recent
research studies discuss the feasibility of processing data gathered by a
smartphone to locate the phone's owner, even when the user does not intend to
share his location information, e.g., when the Global Positioning System (GPS)
is off. Previous research efforts rely on at least one of the two following
fundamental requirements, which significantly limit the ability of the
adversary: (i) the attacker must accurately know either the user's initial
location or the set of routes through which the user travels and/or (ii) the
attacker must measure a set of features, e.g., the device's acceleration, for
potential routes in advance and construct a training dataset. In this paper, we
demonstrate that neither of the above-mentioned requirements is essential for
compromising the user's location privacy. We describe PinMe, a novel
user-location mechanism that exploits non-sensory/sensory data stored on the
smartphone, e.g., the environment's air pressure, along with publicly-available
auxiliary information, e.g., elevation maps, to estimate the user's location

Inferring Unusual Crowd Events From Mobile Phone Call Detail Records
The pervasiveness and availability of mobile phone data offer the opportunity
of discovering usable knowledge about crowd behaviors in urban environments.
Cities can leverage such knowledge in order to provide better services (e.g.,
public transport planning, optimized resource allocation) and safer cities.
Call Detail Record (CDR) data represents a practical data source to detect and
monitor unusual events considering the high level of mobile phone penetration,
compared with GPS equipped and open devices. In this paper, we provide a
methodology that is able to detect unusual events from CDR data that typically
has low accuracy in terms of space and time resolution. Moreover, we introduce
a concept of unusual event that involves a large amount of people who expose an
unusual mobility behavior. Our careful consideration of the issues that come
from coarse-grained CDR data ultimately leads to a completely general framework
that can detect unusual crowd events from CDR data effectively and efficiently.
Through extensive experiments on real-world CDR data for a large city in
Africa, we demonstrate that our method can detect unusual events with 16%
higher recall and over 10 times higher precision, compared to state-of-the-art
methods. We implement a visual analytics prototype system to help end users
analyze detected unusual crowd events to best suit different application
scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on the
detection of unusual events from CDR data with considerations of its temporal
and spatial sparseness and distinction between user unusual activities and

Therapy Progress Indicator (TPI): Combining speech parameters and the subjective unit of distress
A posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe handicap in daily life and its treatment is complex. To evaluate the success of treatments, an objective and unobtrusive expert system was envisioned: an therapy progress indicator (TPI). Speech was considered as an excellent candidate for providing an objective, unobtrusive emotion measure. Speech of 26 PTSD patients was recorded while they participated in two reliving sessions: re-experiencing their last panic attack and their last joyful occasion. As a subjective measure, the subjective unit of distress was determined, which enabled the validation of derived speech features. A set of parameters of the speech features: signal, power, zero crossing ratio, and pitch, was found to discriminate between the two sessions. A regression model involving these parameters was able to distinguish between positive and negative distress. This model lays the foundation for an TPI for patients with PTSD, which enables objective and unobtrusive evaluations of therapies
